S Africa`s Harmony 2Q Net $30.60 Mln Vs $11.1 Mln In 1Q
JOHANNESBURG (Dow Jones)--South Africa`s Harmony Gold Mining Co. (HGMCY) Monday reported a nearly threefold rise in net profits to $30.60 million in the fiscal second quarter ended Dec. 31, compared with $11.1 million three months earlier.
Harmony, which is the country`s third-biggest gold producer, said that in rand terms its earnings rose 230% to 308 million rand ($1=ZAR11.5200).
The company attributed the rise in net profits to a higher received gold price in rand terms.
The company`s gold production slipped 3.5% to 594,272 ounces during the period under review, down from 616,038 ounces for the previous three months.
The company`s cash costs, meanwhile, fell to $198 a troy ounce from $230/oz three months previously.
"The December 2001 quarter can probably be described as the period in which the future of the company changed significantly, with excellent operational performance and solid progress with corporate activities here and in Australia," said Harmony Chief Executive Bernard Swanepoel, addressing analysts at a presentation in Johannesburg.
Swanepoel said the fall in the value of the rand against the dollar significantly bolstered the company`s earnings.
In rand terms, the received gold price per kilogram of gold averaged ZAR88,491/kg during the December quarter, up 19% from ZAR74,164/kg for the September quarter.
"The depreciation of the rand has made the company significantly more profitable," Swanepoel said.
"However, now is the time to double our efforts to control working costs as all stakeholders will be aggressively increasing their demands for a larger slice of this windfall profit."
Swanepoel said the company`s focus was now on enhancing the value of the company by increasing the profit margin of the ounces Harmony produces.
At around 1130 GMT on the JSE Securities Exchange South Africa, Harmony was trading up ZAR3.70, or 4.8%, to ZAR81.00.
Commenting on Harmony`s recent acquisition, with black empowerment partner African Rainbow Minerals, of AngloGold Ltd.`s (AU) Freegold assets for ZAR2.2 million in December, Swanepoel said the joint venture was making good progress towards developing new operational plans.
He said Harmony`s Free State operations reported a much-improved performance, returning a cash operating profit of ZAR87.5 million on the back of higher recovery grades.
He said Evander continued to deliver strong results with a cash operating profit of ZAR111.4 million, up 83% on the ZAR61.0 million reported for the September quarter.
Its Elandskraal operations reported cash operating profits of ZAR87.2 million, compared with the ZAR43.3 million reported previously, Swanepoel said.
The past quarter`s activities of the offshore operations consisted of a takeover offer to shareholders of Australian-based Hill 50 (A.HGD) and the continued restructuring of its New Hampton operations in Australia.
A successful bid for Hill 50 and current production from New Hampton will increase the company`s production profile from 220,000 ounces a year to approximately 500,000 ounces from Australia, and brings the company on track to produce 3 million ounces a year, Swanepoel said.

Harmony`s Swanepoel Comments on Mechanization in Gold Mines
By Antony Sguazzin
Johannesburg, Jan. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Bernard Swanepoel, chief executive of Harmony Gold Mining Co. Ltd., comments on the logic of replacing humans with machines in South African gold mines. Gold mines employ about 200,000 people in South Africa:
``We should question whether we are mechanizing for the sake of mechanizing. It does destroy a lot of jobs.
``We have mechanized to counter the unions when they have been problematic and that was the wrong reason. We should have found ways to make South African workers more productive.
``We are not a company obsessed with mechanization. Putting people underground comes with responsibility.
``Our challenge is finding ways of mining at depth safely.``

No risk, no chance, oder so.
