Investigators of the Independent University of Barcelona (UAB) and of the pharmaceutical company Mologen have initiated the first tests with a vaccine to fight the leishmaniasis in dogs, a disease caused by the Leishmania parasite, that transmits itself by punctures of insects.
Leishmaniasis, that can appear in form of slight cutaneous injuries until visceral complications that can cause the death, anywhere in the world affects 12 million people, according to informed the UAB. This disease is endemic in zones of Asia, Africa, the south of Europe and Latin America.
The vaccine, proven successfully in rats, is based on a new technology, developed and patented by Mologen laboratories, to transfer DNA fragments of the genes of the parasite that causes the disease to the nucleus of certain cells with the intention to cause an immunological answer.
The tests of this vaccine, that can be administered through the skin of the dogs will last 7 months and will consist of verifying its effectiveness to protect to healthy animals before the visceral leishmaniasis, the most lethal form of the disease. to be successful, the investigation could open to the door to a vaccine the human being.
In Spain the dogs are the main guests of the parasite that causes the leishmaniasis, reason why the experts consider that the eradication of the disease in these animals is one of the high-priority objectives to improve the human health. A 15% of dogs of the Mediterranean zone present/display this disease.
