Insiders: Baidu Revealed Strong Q1 Results Thanks to Google

Posted on: Tue, 13 Apr 2010 07:39:58 EDT

Chinese-language Internet search leader Baidu Inc. (Nasdaq: BIDU | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) achieved 13,500 new advertisers, a new high, in the first quarter of 2010, disclosed insiders close to the company's distributor meeting with approximately 500 people, which was held in Shenzhen, a south boomtown in China, from April 7 to 11.

The number of Baidu's daily paid clicks, citing the meeting, jumped to near 12 million in the quarter from 9.50 million previously. The company's daily revenue outraced CNY 20 million.

In addition, Baidu's new search marketing platform e.baidu.com, which is an improved service modeled on its previously paid search listing platform, reached a conversion ratio growth of 277%. The new platform's direct marketing team expanded to 5,000 people.

Baidu executives believed that these growths were ascribed to some factors including the quit of Baidu Inc. (Nasdaq: BIDU) in Mainland China, which is the largest rival to Baidu.

Some participators of the meeting revealed that Baidu upgraded its expectations for 2010 - to top a yearly revenue growth of 60% and a monthly new user addition of 10,000. However, the company did not confirm these goals in the meeting.

Na, ich weiß nicht so recht, warum die Bratheringe von Auriga da
noch extra ein neues Target ausloben, daß nur 4 % über dem derzei-
      tigen Kurs liegt.

Baidu.com initiated with a Hold at Auriga; $640 tgt . Auriga initiates BIDU with a Hold and a $640 tgt saying Google's departure from China's rapid growing search market is a significant positive for BIDU as it becomes a market monopoly. As such, firm expects co to enjoy significant growth in 2010. Firm believes BIDU can benefit significantly from GOOG's departure yet the positives seem to have been priced into the stock and there could be limited upside.

Google’s business in China starts to unravel

      By Kathrin Hille in Beijing

      Published: March 31 2010 18:12

Google’s business in China started showing signs of unravelling on Wednesday as unreliable search performance shook advertisers’ and users’ confidence.

Although the almost complete blockage of results to searches from China on Google that occurred on Tuesday night appeared to have ended, a new array of searches led to browser errors on Wednesday. A long list of Chinese family names and any terms including one of them triggered the errors.

Google said it had no update on the performance of its Chinese search. The State Council Information Office and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the two government bodies in charge of the internet, did not respond to faxed questions on the cause for the disruptions.

Advertisers said they had witnessed a drop-off in traffic and would react by switching to other search engines.

“Monetisation rates for advertisers on Google have dropped by 30 per cent to 50 per cent compared with the period before Google moved its Chinese search to its Hong Kong site,” said Cao Junbo, chief analyst at iResearch, a Beijing-based firm.

Monetisation refers to companies’ returns on investment rates in search ads. When user traffic drops, a decline in click rates and monetisation tends to follow.

An official at Yangzhou Huike Electronic Co, a medical equipment maker which advertises on Google, said the company had seen a drastic dropoff in clicks on its ads this week and was considering buying advertising on Baidu instead.

Chinese users reacted to the uncertainty by turning away. Users interviewed by the Financial Times said they had started using Baidu, the local online search market leader, because Google did not work.

Meanwhile, two new reports of cyberattacks raised further concerns about China’s internet policies. Several scholars, analysts and journalists working on China and Taiwan issues said their Yahoo e-mail accounts had been accessed without their permission in what appeared to be a targeted attack.

And Vietnamese activists opposed to a Chinese mining investment in their country have been targeted in a new cyberattack, Google revealed on Tuesday.

The internet company said a virus had been used to attack dissident websites and described the move as an attempt to “squelch” campaigners opposed to a bauxite mining project run by Chinalco, the Chinese state-owned resources company.

Deutsche Bank Lifts Price Target On Baidu (BIDU) to 'Street High' $752
      March 31, 2010 7:12 AM EDT

Deutsche Bank raised their price target on Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) a new 'street high' $752, citing a higher multiple, strong Phoenix Nest monetization. The firm maintained their Buy rating.

The firm commented, " We believe Phoenix Nest will be able to drive rev growth for the next 12 months given positive signs of monetization in 1Q10. Moreover, the positive impact of Google's withdrawal from China has arrived earlier than we initially thought."
