Analysts hailed Trevali's deal with Glencore as positive. In particular analysts contacted by Mineweb on Wednesday morning said they liked that the private placement cements an already close relationship between Trevali and Glencore, a dominant player on zinc markets, and that it gives Trevali added funds to develop its zinc-lead mining projects.
"It gets them across the finish line," Raymond James analyst Adam Low said, referring to development at Trevali's Santander project in Peru and its Halfmile mine in New Brunswick.
In an email M Partners analyst Marc Johnson called it a "big vote of confidence" in Trevali's mine-building strategy.
Neither analyst took issue with Glencore's Chris Eskdale joining the board, who Trevali touted as "an invaluable asset" to have as it develops into a full fledged zinc-lead-silver miner.
Low said before he decided to cover Trevali he had had some reservations about the relationship between the small would-be miner and the metals giant, which is providing a mill at Santander to Trevali in exchange for a tolling and offtake agreement. Trevali subsequently inked an offtake agreement with Xstrata, now in merger talks with Glencore, on Halfmile ore.
But Low said that over the years the relationship between Glencore and Trevali has proven to be "mutually beneficial" and shown that they can "co-exist in a very harmonious way." And besides, he pointed out: "It's hard in the zinc markets not to be involved with Glencore in some way."
Johnson also saw strength in having Glencore on Trevali's board of directors given what was already a close and important relationship. "So all in all there's no danger of having Glencore on the board since it's a natural extension of the ongoing relationship now that Trevali is set to become an important polymetallic producer," he said.
