Baobab Resources latest drill results from Tete iron ore project

Baobab Resources shares advanced 10% in early deals, as it unveiled more encouraging results from the South Zone of the Tete project in Mozambique.

It began the 2011 phase of exploration drilling earlier this month and two reverse circulation drill rigs are working on the South Zone, in Blocks 1 and 7. In this morning’s update Baobab gave the results from a three hole drilling cross-section in Block 1 - the southernmost portion of the South Zone.

In Block 1 Baobab has delineated a broad 140 meter wide body of heavily mineralized iron ore (magnetite).

The three holes hit multiple intercepts with lengths ranging between 15 to 48 metres with concentrate grades ranging from 60 to 64.7% iron and 0.59 to 0.74% vanadium. Mass recoveries ranged from 32 to 91 metres.

Mr Ben James MD of Baobab Resources said that “Block 1 is demonstrating excellent continuity between completed drill sections with current work programs pushing the model out to the north.”

Mr James added that “All areas drilled to date have delineated substantially wider zones of mineralization than anticipated. Following earlier positive results, Baobab's exploration management team has designed an expansion drilling program to test continuations of the ore zones. The company recommenced drilling in early February and intends to have 3 RC rigs set to be operational by the end of the month.”

Baobab expects to release the next batch of results from Block 1 within the next two weeks. It also said that the current drilling continues to delineate substantial mineralization to the north.

Massamba Camp Drilling Update; MD: "“a dramatic improvement in drilling productivity has enabled exploration campaigns over the Massamba Camp to get back on schedule. Drilling @Tenge/Ruoni is particularly encouraging &endorses our belief that the prospect will host substantial, readily exploitable, resources. We anticipate that the drilling campaigns @Ruoni North &South will be completed by the end of August to coincide with the commencement of drilling @Tenge. We are working closely with the laboratories both in Mozambique &Australia to ensure the best possible analytical turnaround times &look forward to presenting the resource estimate for South Zone this month, followed by Chitongue Grande &Ruoni during September &October. From results received to date, Baobab is confident that, by Q4 ´11, it will have exceeded its earlier guidance of an expected global resource of 300mt. " - August 05, 2011

      HL:

+ The South Zone prospect resource estimate is scheduled for release during August. Final work is waiting on pending analyses from the laboratory.

+ The expansion resource drilling campaign @Chitongue Grande has been completed with thirty six reverse circulation(RC) holes drilled for an aggregate total of 6,275m. Down dip &along strike projections of the existing resource have been intersected. Consultants will commence a resource estimation shortly.

+ Drilling @Tenge/Ruoni is progressing rapidly. Drilling has intersected a heavily mineralised package varying in thickness from 60m to 150m. Mineralisation has been synformally folded with the fold hinge plunging gently to the west-northwest. Exploration campaigns in the prospect area have been divided into three resource blocks:

+ Ruoni North: representing 1km of strike along the northern limb of the fold. Twenty two RC &diamond holes have been completed to date across seven traverses for an aggregate total of 4,040m. Drilling has intersected a robust package of mineralisation from surface dipping @25° to 45° to the southwest. An additional five drill holes need to be completed before resource estimation work may commence.

+ Ruoni South: representing 1.2km of strike along the southern limb of the fold and located approximately 1km south of Ruoni North. Twelve RC &diamond holes have been completed to date(2,270m) with an additional nine holes required to complete the programme. Mineralisation in the Ruoni South area is generally steeper dipping(c.65° to the north).

+ Tenge: representing the hinge zone of the fold &covering an area of approximately 0.5km2. Drill sites are being constructed in preparation for two diamond rigs scheduled to commence drilling by the end of August. Approximately 3,000m has been designed to assess the Tenge area. ...

Baobab Resources Closes In On A JORC Resource Of 300 Million Tonnes @Tete - MS - Sep 5, 2011

      - By Alastair Ford -
      http://minesite.com/news/baobab-resources-closes-in-on-a-jor…

"Baobab Resources is more than half-way towards attaining a JORC resource of 300 million tonnes of iron ore at its Tete project in Mozambique. That’s the simple message that Ben James delivered when he rang up Minesite for a chat at the end of last week, following the company’s latest upgrade. There’s already 161 million tonnes of JORC-recognised ore in the ground, and but Ben reckons he’ll be able to deliver the other 140 by the end of October. Rigs continue to turn across the Tete ground, and progress on the south section of the project has allowed Ben to start talking quite optimistically of hitting 400 million tonnes quite soon after the 300 million tonne target is met, probably before the end of the year. That’s some going, but considering that Baobab has so far drilled around 40,000 metres of a planned 50,000 metres for the current year, perhaps not altogether surprising. The company has been on the ground a fair while now, and is beginning to know its way around.

The current resource is split between two zones, the Massamba zone to the north, where the company has just demonstrated the presence of 113 million tonnes grading 27.5% iron ore, with additional titanium, vanadium, and other potential metal credits. The remainder of the resource at Tete is centred around Chitongue Grande to the south. Work there continues too, and an RC drill programme, undertaken with a view to adding additional tonnage has just been wrapped up. Even so, it’s on Massamba that the spotlight is currently shining.

“Our principal focus”, says Ben, “is on getting that Massamba project up past 300 million tonnes, towards the half a billion mark. Morale at the Massmaba camp is at an all-time high”.  Previously, Baobab had set out an aspiration to prove up a JORC resource at Tete of somewhere between 500 million and 700 million tonnes. That now looks increasingly attainable. And sooner, rather than later.

Still, the news of the 161 million tonnes is only a stepping stone to that October target of 300 million. And it’s then that Ben reckons that investors will really sit up and take notice. Over the past couple of months the market hasn’t exactly been kind to Baobab. Its shares have more than halved in value since the spring to the current 21.25p, notwithstanding the rapid progress on the ground and the favourable noises coming out of some of the biggest players in the iron ore space. Last week at the Africa Down Under conference, David Joyce, a senior man in Rio Tinto’s iron ore division, talked of the increasing pressures on supply in the face of ongoing Chinese demand. Plenty of seasoned observers raised their eyebrows at that, as Rio Tinto doesn’t usually wear its heart quite so openly on its sleeve  , especially since its recent difficulties with the Chinese  .

But there’s no doubt that the markets are buzzing. Spot prices have recently been running at around US$190 per tonne, and may continue high for some time to come, although opinion is divided on that. Because in spite of the unfashionable nature of hedging in the gold industry, many analysts in London greeted the news that London Mining, which is on the cusp of production at Marampa in Sierra Leone, had locked in some of the current high price for its 2012 sales with nods of approval.

Baobab is some way away from taking such decisions. Indeed it isn’t clear that the company will take Tete into production on its own in any case. But one thing’s for sure – Ben James wants to play as big a role as possible. And he sees a big role for Tete as part of something much bigger  .

I’d love to be involved in Mozambique’s new steel industry”, he says, and then adds that there are supportive noises coming out of the government, in relation to mine-mouth smelting at Tete is concerned. Ben met with the minister of for mineral resources in Maputo on Monday 29th August, and had subsequent meetings with government delegates at the Africa Down Under conference in Perth later in the week. He describes the relationship as constructive.

It seems unlikely that there’ll be any let-up in the relentless pace of development. Newsflow will come from Chitongue Grande first, and then there’ll be the announcement of that October resource, and the drive to add more tonnes thereafter. At the same time, prefeasibility work is getting underway, and exploration on the company’s Muande magnetite-phosphate target to the east is ticking away in the background. Short-term, though, it’ll be Tete that makes the running. “It’s becoming pretty clear”, says Ben, “that the rest of the 300 million tonnes will come pretty early  . People can see the projects going forward, and we’re getting a lot of attention.” Maybe the attention will switch back to the share price shortly, too. It might not be altogether surprising if there was some buying in advance of the October news. “You’ve got to think big with these sorts of projects”, says Ben. “And we’ve got the audacity  .” Whether investors have the audacity to get in early or not is another matter entirely. letztlich gehen zZ. ja alle - insbesondere die noch als Explorer tätigen und damit als hochspekulativ zu betrachtenden - Eisenerz-Werte rund um den Globus gegen Süden....

das ist also nx besonderes in dieser Börsenstimmung....

Baobab Resources Plc (LON:BAO) Exceeds 300Mt Global Resource Target with Ruoni South
London, Dec 7, 2011 (ABN Newswire) - Baobab Resources Plc (LON:BAO) is an iron ore, base and precious metals explorer with a portfolio of exploration projects in Mozambique. The Company is pleased to present a resource update at the Massamba Group of its Tete iron / vanadium / titanium project.

      HIGHLIGHTS

      - Massamba Group global resource base expanded to 324Mt (JORC) with the completion of the Ruoni South resource estimate.

      - Ruoni South 56Mt Inferred Resource reports a head grade of 34% Fe with an average concentrate grade of 62% Fe, 0.9% V2O5 and 8% TiO2 at a mass recovery of 34%.

      - The Ruoni South resource complements the 93Mt estimate at Ruoni North and delivers a higher quality concentrate at a competitive mass recovery.

      - Drilling programmes at the contiguous Tenge deposit are all but concluded, with 24 drill holes completed for an aggregate total of c.4,500m. Drilling is defining a substantial package of mineralisation, approximately 120m thick, that comprises a significant portion of the 100m high Monte Tenge and dips shallowly towards the west. Initial analytical results are expected during December with a resource statement scheduled for February 2012.

Commenting today, Ben James, Baobab's Managing Director, said: "Baobab is very pleased to present the Ruoni South resource estimate which expands the global inventory beyond the 300Mt milestone and in doing so demonstrates the Company's commitment to not just deliver on stated targets, but to exceed them. The indicative quality of the Ruoni South concentrate is encouraging, particularly the higher vanadium grade, and opens a range of production possibilities to be considered during the pre-feasibility study.

"The Tenge drilling is defining a significant package of mineralization that will add substantially to the resource inventory early in 2012. The Project is maturing rapidly, due largely to the accelerated drilling campaigns this year, and the Management recognises the extraordinary effort and commitment made by the technical teams in the field. 2012 will see the status of the Project transition from one of exploration to one of development in what is shaping up to be the most exciting mining address in southern Africa."

      Resource Estimate

Internationally respected consultant, Coffey Mining Limited, has completed a resource estimate based on the completed drilling programme at Ruoni South. Their estimates of Inferred Mineral Resources, including the South Zone estimate (announced on 30 August 2011), Chitongue Grande and Ruoni North (both announced on 31 October 2011), are summarised below (see link at the bottom of the release). All estimates have been compiled in accordance with the Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) Code guidelines. Notes on the Ruoni South estimation parameters are presented as Annexure 1 (see link at the bottom of the release).

In many areas the resource blocks remain open along strike and at depth, requiring extensional drilling programmes in 2012. Some areas of intersected mineralisation remain unclassified due to insufficient drilling density and will also require further drill definition.

Due to consistent sampling and analytical protocols, including routine Davie Tube Recovery (DTR) determinations, across mineralised and non-mineralise waste material at Ruoni South, Coffey Mining has been able to predict the expected average concentrate characteristics for the mineralised material to an inferred level of confidence:

      - Ruoni South: 61.7% Fe, 0.93% V2O5, 7.96% TiO2, 1.04% SiO2, 3.10% Al2O3, 0.001% P and 0.22% S at a Mass Recovery of 34.5%.

      The expected weighted average concentrate characteristics for the global 323.5Mt Inferred Resource are 60.2% Fe, 0.8% V2O5, 9.7% TiO2, 1.1% SiO2, 3.3% Al2O3, 0.001% P and 0.2% S at a Mass Recovery of 31.4%.

Where no lower cut-off grade has been applied, the resource blocks have been constrained by geologically defined mineralised zones and therefore reported accordingly; it is currently assumed that mining selectivity is limited within the mineralised zones. Three-dimensional block models were generated for the Ruoni South deposit to enable grade estimation. Coffey Mining has based its grade interpolation on Ordinary Kriging. Grade was interpolated based on 4m composite samples using domain control for both composite and block selections applying hard boundaries between the zones.

Ordinary Kriging was also used to obtain estimates of DTR and service variables for Ruoni South. The concentrate grades (Fe, V2O5, TiO2, SiO2, Al2O3, P, LOI, CaO, K2O, MgO, Mn, Na2O and S) were then back calculated from these estimates. For the concentrate grades of all other resource blocks, a service variable approach to the estimation of block concentrate grades is required to account for the variation in the percent weight.

      On-going Resource Drilling: Tenge/Ruoni Prospect

Tenge/Ruoni is the easternmost prospect area of the Massamba Group. Drilling at Tenge/Ruoni is nearing completion and has intersected a heavily mineralised package varying in thickness from 60m to 150m. Mineralisation has been synformally folded with the fold hinge plunging gently to the westnorthwest.

Exploration campaigns in the prospect area have been divided into three resource blocks:

      - Ruoni North: representing 1km of strike along the northern limb of the fold. Thirty seven reverse circulation (RC) and diamond holes have been completed to date across seven traverses for an aggregate total of c.5,750m. Drilling has intersected a substantial package of mineralisation from surface dipping at 25degree to 50degree to the southwest.

The 93Mt Ruoni North resource estimate was announced to the market on 31 October 2011 and formed the resource base for a scoping study (also completed by Coffey Mining). The scoping study returned outstanding results, including a before tax US$1.4B net present value (NPV at 10% discount) and 34% internal rate of return (IRR) in the beneficiation and smelting of a pig iron product, that were announced on 31 November 2011.

      - Ruoni South: representing 1.2km of strike along the southern limb of the fold. Twenty seven RC and diamond holes have been completed for an aggregate total of 5,200m. Mineralisation in the Ruoni South area is generally steeper dipping (c.65degree to the north). The 56Mt resource estimate is discussed in detail above.

      - Tenge: representing the hinge zone of the fold, covering a strike length of approximately 1.3km, and defined by the Monte Tenge ridge which elevations of up to 100m above the local plateau. The drilling programme is nearing completion with 24 diamond and RC holes completed to date for an aggregate total of 4,518m. Drilling has outlined a c.120m thick package of strongly mineralised material that comprises a significant portion of Monte Tenge ridge and dips gently towards the west.

Consultant, Coffey Mining Pty Ltd, will commence modelling of the Tenge resource block shortly with a resource statement scheduled for February 2012. The Company anticipates receiving the first analytical results from Tenge during December.

SEEEHR skeptisch was Aussagen wie "Top/Best Pick in SektorXY" angeht)

      V) Die Umsetzung des Projektes/"Clusters" würde so oder so "ziemlich" kapitalintensiv. Was das speziell in der jetzigen Zeit bedeutet muss sich jeder selber überlegen

      @Jaci,

James: "The MOU is a significant milestone for Baobab in its on-going negotiations with the public +private sectors for securing access to requisite infrastructure. The Company looks forward to working with EDM to outline a definitive power solution for the Tete project. Other operational aspects of the Bankable Feasibility Study are progressing @pace. Rig availability in Tete has been working in Baobab's favour, allowing for the acceleration of the measured resource drilling programme @the Tenge resource block. In addition, the discovery of a limestone/dolomite resource in such close proximity to the proposed operation is of strategic importance. Baobab is also very pleased to announce the approval of the environmental scoping report which, coupled with the completed Pre-Feasibility Study, forms the core documentation for a mining title application" - Oct 25, 2013

+ MOU signed with national power utility company EDM.

+ Environmental impact scoping report unconditionally approved by Mozambique authorities. The report forms the basis of the on going Environmental, Social +Health Impact Assessment('ESHIA'). ESHIA wet +dry season baseline studies have been successfully completed.

+ Drilling to elevate the Tenge resource block to a measured category(JORC) is on-going with two reverse circulation('RC') rigs currently in operation +a diamond rig mobilising to site. The objective of the programme is to elevate the resources that will be mined over the 1st 10 to 15 years of operation to a JORC compliant measured classification.

+ A significant limestone/dolomite deposit has been discovered 5km to the northwest of the Tenge/Ruoni resource block. Representative rock chip samples, currently being analysed, will determine the deposit's suitability as a source of flux material for the iron making process. die Kalkulationen waren "optional" auf 1/2.000.000 Tonnen/Jahr ausgelegt. In der Präsi sprechen sie von 'of 1.000.000 - 4.000.000t/a of pig iron & related steel products", muss man mal schauen ob da noch was geht. Sind auf jeden Fall noch "einige Stellschrauben in Bewegung":

ich bin mir nicht sicher ob das Ding gebaut wird:

      London-listed miner " "to build" $1.000.000.000 pig iron plant, in Mozambique" - MW - Feb 7, 2014

      - Keith Campbell, Martin Zhuwakinyu -
      www.miningweekly.com/article/new-project-for-beneficiation-o…

" Mozambique-based mining company Capitol Resources, a wholly owned subsidiary of London Stock Exchange Aim-listed Baobab Resources, is to invest $1-billion in the construction of a pig iron plant in the Moatize district of the south-east African country’s Tete province.

Company exploration manager Iain Plews pointed this out to the Mozambican newspaper Diário de Moçambique in Beira late last month.

“We believe that this project will significantly contribute to the development of Mozambique,” he said. Construction work is scheduled to start at the end of 2015 and the plant should start operations in 2016. It will have a production capacity of a million tons of pig iron a year. Ferrovanadium will be a by-product. While the plant will produce only pig iron during Phase 1, it is intended that later it will also produce steel.

The decision to go ahead with the project followed the confirmation, through exploration and prospecting, of an orebody of 750-million tons of iron-ore. The prospecting programme started in 2009 and involved the drilling of 150 bores over an area of 80 km2. The ore, the newspaper reported, lies from the surface to a depth of 200 m. Currently, 66 people are employed on the project, of which just two are expatriates. The development of the plant could create 500 jobs.

In an investor presentation on the project in London in December, Baobab Resources reported a Joint Ore Reserves Committee-compliant resource of 727-million tons that could provide the basis of a globally-competitive 1-million tons/year (Mt/y) to 4-Mt/y pig iron, ferro-vanadium and steel products operation that would have a life of more than 50 years. Assuming production of 1-Mt/y of pig iron, some 12 000 t/y of vanadium slag would also be produced, which could then be refined into about 3 000 t/y of ferro-vanadium alloy.

The orebody has grades of 36% iron and averages 100 m in thickness, increasing to 180 m in places. For the first 22 years of operation, the strip ratio will be 0.4, contributing to low production costs. The pig iron plant will use two 75 MW electric arc furnaces. Power could come from thermal coal, hydroelectric or even gas power plants, or a combination of any or all of these. Whatever option is chosen, the plant will need only 70 km of transmission line to connect with an electricity source.

The Moatize district already produces thermal and especially metallurgical (or coking) coal, essential for steelmaking. Baobab has already tested coal from the mining projects of Vale (Moatize), Rio Tinto (Benga) and Nippon Steel/Posco (Revuboè) and established that they suit the reduction process Baobab intends to use.

There is also a large limestone/ dolomite deposit that has been outlined by geological mapping and which lies some 5 km north-west of the iron ore-body and within Baobab’s concession. Limestone is, of course, used in steelmaking, to help remove impurities, in the form of slag.

Meanwhile, the Maputo newspaper ‘Notícias’ has reported that the company Moz Environmental, associated with South African enterprise Interwaste, has a project to develop a secure landfill in the Moatize district for waste – including toxic – materials and products produced by the local mining industry. The project is in line with the outcome of environmental studies and public consultations. It will allow sustainable and secure management of the waste products. The landfill has already been approved by the Mozambican government. It will occupy an area of some 20 ha and will be located about 8 km east of the town of Moatize. "

"JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – London-listed Baobab Resources on Friday announced the appointment of current CFO and new business manager Frank Eagar as FD and executive of the company.

As a business development executive, Eagar had been instrumental in the origination and execution of a number of equity and debt transactions and capital raisings by means of initial public offerings and project finance of green and brownfield projects across Africa and Eastern Europe, resulting in, among other things, strong working relationships with international investment banks and finance institutions, Baobab said in a statement.

"We are delighted to welcome Frank to the board, having been an integral part of the management team for the past year. He shares our vision and dedication to build the Tete pig iron project into a high-value, sustainable multicommodity operation,” Baobab chairperson Jeremy Dowler commented.

Meanwhile, Baobab on Friday also announced the resignation of nonexecutive director Jonathan Beardsworth.
