      Hallo zusammen

      In Worten Fünfhundert....

EarthLink reports hefty loss, but tops estimates

      By Larry Dignan ZDII

EarthLink (Nasdaq: ELNK), the second largest Internet service provider in the U.S., reported Wednesday a first quarter net loss excluding charges of $50.9 million, or 43 cents a share, on sales of $219.7 million. The results topped First Call consensus estimates, which called for a loss of 49 cents a share.

Revenue, with the recently acquired MindSpring in the fold, surged from $129.9 million from a year ago. Including merger and acquisition costs, EarthLink lost $111.8 million, or 95 cents a share. The company isn`t projected to be profitable until 2002, according to First Call.

As of March 31, EarthLink had about 3.46 million subscribers, up 54 percent from a year ago and 11 percent from 3.12 million subscribers at the end of the fourth quarter. Of the 3.46 million members, about 45,000 were broadband customers, the company said.

EarthLink is playing in a land of giants. The company competes with AOL, AT&T (NYSE: T) and Microsoft`s (Nasdaq: MSFT) MSN services. In addition, EarthLink battles Prodigy Communications (Nasdaq: PRGY), a host of Baby Bells offering Internet service, and free services from portals such as Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), Lycos (Nasdaq: LCOS), CMGI`s (Nasdaq: CMGI) AltaVista and NetZero (Nasdaq: NZRO).

EarthLink`s results come just hours after America Online (NYSE: AOL) reported a stellar March quarter. AOL`s core service added 1.7 million members to boost its total subscriber base to 22.2 million. The Compuserve 2000 brand picked up 373,000 members to reach 2.7 million. Gateway.net gained 100,000 subscribers to reach 850,000 total.

EarthLink`s strategy is to bring in dial-up customers and migrate them to broadband services. Narrowband revenue, however, accounted for 85 percent of sales in the first quarter. Broadband accounted for 4 percent of revenue. Web hosting and content, commerce and advertising accounted for the remainder of sales.

As for the outlook, EarthLink said it is on track to have 4.5 million members and $1 billion in revenue.

Thirteen analysts rate EarthLink at least a "buy" with two calling the stock a "hold." The stock is trading well below a 52-week high of 76 11/16.

EarthLink`s Broadband Service Hits 50,000-Customer Milestone; EarthLink`s Aggressive Broadband Push Solidifies Its Position Among the Top Tier of Broadband Providers

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 24, 2000--EarthLink (Nasdaq:ELNK) has solidified its place among the top tier of broadband Internet providers, with the announcement that it has exceeded its 50,000-customer milestone. EarthLink has more than doubled its installed-and-paying broadband customer base since the start of the year and will continue this momentum with its recently launched self-install and 3-for-1 pricing and promotions.

"We`ve started to hit our stride and it`s encouraging to see that customers are increasingly choosing EarthLink for broadband access," said Mike Lunsford, executive vice president of broadband services at EarthLink. "Hitting the 50,000-customer mark is significant because it confirms our status as a major retail broadband provider. But this is just the start. New initiatives like self-installs and waived up-front fees should allow us to roll our broadband service even more aggressively."

Internal EarthLink research found that high initial setup, installation and equipment costs were the biggest barrier to new DSL signups. So as of last Monday, EarthLink is waiving all up-front DSL setup and equipment costs nationwide, saving broadband customers up to $350 when they self install their own equipment. In addition, after testing in Dallas and Los Angeles, EarthLink recently introduced self-installation kits for its services that effectively cut the DSL provisioning cycle in half. And the kits are easy enough to use that they`ve had a 95 percent success rate to date. EarthLink has created regional promotions on top of these, such as a three-months-for-the-price-of-one deal currently being offered in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

EarthLink currently offers DSL service in more than 30 major metropolitan markets and cable in nine areas, and should have coverage in more than 2,200 Central Offices (COs) in 40 markets by the end of the second quarter. EarthLink is one of the only national ISPs that offers its members multiple broadband access options. Its commitment to offer both high-speed DSL and cable Internet access, and to use multiple broadband vendors, means EarthLink can offer its broadband services to members in more areas of the country. Having multiple vendors also has allowed the company to scale up its broadband operations more quickly.

      Hallo zusammen
