      SRAM

SRAM – I know that Simtek is a relatively tiny semiconductor company, but does that justify complete neglect from Wall Street? Sooner or later the street will realize that SRAM is a certifiable gem of a holding. Yes, it is small, but yes, it also has impressive profits and growth. The best time to buy would be now, while the company is still relatively anonymous.

      TUESDAY, AUGUST 29, 2000 11:38:00 PM EST
Aug. 29, 2000 (Electronic Engineering Times - CMP via COMTEX) -- COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - Simtek Corp. here has acquired MacroTech Semiconductor Inc. (San Jose, Calif.) for $1.7 million in stock to continue its expansion in the programmable-logic chip market. MacroTech provides replacement PLDs, and the purchase will enable Simtek to address a wider range of PLD product families, according to company officials.

MacroTech`s products are produced by Chartered Semiconductor in Singapore using a 0.35-micron process technology. Its PLD designs can be scaled to 0.25- and 0.18-micron technologies, Simtek said.

The deal follows Simtek`s acquisition of Integrated Logic Systems Inc., which supplies metal programmable gate arrays as replacements for Altera, Actel and Lattice FPGAs. - By Semiconductor Business News

      Das wird ein Riesenmarkt.

      Also, beobachten.

      News über Simtek:

      ALERT INVESTOR!!! FEATURE STOCK-MONDAY
      ..........
.......The chip sector is - and will continue to be - very hot, due to explosive demand for storage and special memory devices. Finding a microcap that is growing by leaps and bounds, is profitable and is a proven acquisition vehicle is like finding the proverbial needle in a haystack. Simtek Corp. (SRAM, 1.16, BB), a 13 year-old Colorado Springs-based provider of high performance nonvolatile memory and logic integrated circuits, manufactures the world`s fastest reprogrammable nonvolatile memories. SRAM was a stock that we did very well with two months back, when The Insider featured it, but it has drifted back down, despite a lot of corporate progress. You will want to own this bargain-priced stock.

SRAM (static random access memory) retains data bits in its memory as long as the power is on; unlike dynamic RAM (DRAM), which stores bits in cells consisting of a capacitor and a transistor, SRAM does not have to be periodically refreshed. Static RAM provides faster access to data and is more expensive than DRAM. The global SRAM market will have double-digit growth for the next several years, growing from about $4.6B in 1999 to $7.7B in 2004, according to IC Insights - very impressive in view of some analysts` prediction of the demise of the SRAM market two years ago.

Simtek took the two most important features of volatile and nonvolatile memory chips and produced a single chip they call nvSRAM. ("Nonvolatile" refers to the product`s ability to retain data stored in memory when the device is disconnected from the power source). By combining static random access memory (SRAM) and electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM) in a shadow memory configuration and placing an additional EEPROM cell within each SRAM cell, the chip can be read directly to - or written from - the external data pins, in a way that is identical to conventional SRAM operation. Plus, the entire product line is guaranteed nonvolatile for a 100 years without external power or special care. The benefits of the company`s technology are obvious: (1) it directly replaces SRAM, battery-backed SRAM, EPROM and/or EEPROM, (2) the chips provide automatic recall when powered up after a failure, preventing data loss from power failures or brown-outs, (3) the chip has faster read/write capabilities (and computing has a "need for speed" today), (4) it`s simple to install, with no socketing or snap-on steps (the chip solders directly on to the PC motherboard), and (5) it supplements or replaces FLASH. In other words, you get program storage, data storage and SRAM all in one package.

Their proprietary QuantumTrap technology was designed to insert nonvolatility into an existing SRAM process - not disturbing the existing architecture. This allows the production of the world`s fastest reprogrammable nonvolatile memories with unsurpassed retention and reliability. This is a significant achievement too.

Simtek is not only the manufacturer of vital technology, it also a significant acquisition vehicle in its quest to become a global leader in programmable logic. Earlier, the company acquired Integrated Logic Systems, who developed reasonably-priced metal programming gate array (MPGA) replacements for field programmable gate arrays (FPGA). The producer list of FPGAs gives you an idea of the importance of the technology: Xilinx, Altera, Actel and Lattice. These companies must now use expensive FPGA`s in production because of the high conversion costs associated with replacing the devices with less expensive non-programmable parts. ILSI`s chip architecture removes these high costs by supporting easy conversion to its own low-cost MPGA`s ($6-7, versus $40). At present the total market for FPGA`s is fast approaching $3B and has a wide range of applications that include data tech, telecom, PC products, office automation and industrial controls. Simtek plans to operate ILSI as a profit center along with their current memory chip group. SRAM also just acquired San Jose-based MacroTech Semiconductor. (MTS). The acquisition, along with the May purchase of Integrated Logic Systems (ILSI) expands Simtek`s potential to further penetrate the $3 billion programmable logic device market. ILSI`s devices can handle up to 100,000 gates, but MTS`s go as high 1M gates. A perfect fit. Doug Mitchell, Simtek`s CEO: "I am especially excited about Simtek`s ability to penetrate high growth application segments with both our memory and logic products as we fully integrate the ILSI technology into our sales and operations infrastructure. Already we are uncovering customer applications that were not previously available to either company individually."

The world is going wireless at breakneck speed, and SRAM is in this race too, having signed a strategic alliance with WebGear of San Jose, who has been pioneering home and small office wireless local area networking (WLAN) solutions since 1996. They market Aviator and AviatorPro wireless communications and networking solutions that utilize radio technology instead of wires for communication between PCs. Users may share files, printers and Internet connection between their PCs, while saving time, money and the cost of installing hard-wired networks. The agreement includes the exchange of 1.25M shares of SRAM common for 1.875M shares of WebGear common. You`ll hear a lot about this partnership in the near future.

SRAM is proftable, growing at over 50% and is selling at 27 times the current year`s earnings, with return on equity of 27%. The company had $3.2M in revenues in Q2, up 50% over last year. the first quarter and $5.9M for the first six months, up 64%. Both quarters were profitable, to the tune of about a penny a share each. The company has 42M shares outstanding and a float of about 29M. The company is growing sales fast in all their major markets including North America, Japan, S.E. Asia and Europe, with current backlog equal to $4.9M, about half a year`s sales, and growing. SRAM`s memory devices are growing at 30-40% per year but the logic device business will grow faster, in the 42-43% range. Overall, SRAM expects to generate ongoing pre-tax profit of better than 10%. Our 2001 revenue estimate stands at $21M, and we forecast $2.4 pre-tax, or EPS of 5.7c a share. This company is growing at 50% and, despite being a technology leader, it is selling at 20 times 2001 EPS, a 60% discount from its growth rate. You do the math.

After hitting a high of 4.91 in March, SRAM crashed to 1 and started drifting sideways. A foray to 2.00 after The Insider`s recommendation didn`t carry any higher. Now we have a good 5 month base and a break-out of 2.00 to be expected in the next few weeks. Beyond that, there isn`t much supply and we think you could see the stock at 3.00 by early 2001. SRAM is liquid, trading over 200,000 shares daily, and we strongly encourage you to own it.
