Siemens says UK plant sale talks still on
LONDON, Sept 8 (Reuters) - German electronics and engineering group Siemens AG said
on Friday that it was still in talks with U.S. semiconductor maker Atmel Corp
(NasdaqNM:ATML - news) over the sale of a disused microchip plant in northeast England.
``The negotiations have not concluded so we cannot say anything more,`` a spokeswoman at
Siemens`s British operations told Reuters.
The Financial Times earlier quoted Atmel as saying it was close to finalising a deal to buy the plant -- which would be expected
to employ some 1,500 people at full capacity -- but talks over a long-term supplier deal with Siemens were holding things up.
The paper said Atmel, which produces chips for wireless communications products, would be likely to pay some 35 million
pounds ($50 million) for the North Tyneside plant and invest $1 billion there.

Atmel eröffnet Entwicklungszentrum in Berlin
weiter ausbauen.
Entwicklungszentrum in Berlin etablieren.

Siemens Sells U.K. Chip Factory to Atmel for Undisclosed Price
By Matthew Miller
Munich, Sept. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Siemens AG, Germany`s biggest electronics company, agreed to sell its idle North Tyneside chip factory in England to U.S. chipmaker Atmel Corp.
Both companies have agreed not to release terms of the sale, the Munich-based electronics maker said. Siemens said it`s in talks with Amtel to buy semiconductor products from the U.S. chipmaker, in order to maintain availability of flash memory.
Siemens, along with other producers of mobile phones, has been building up extra capacity to help ensure availability amid a global shortage of components. The company, which plans to double production of its latest mobile phone next year, has previously said growth may slow this quarter because of a bottleneck in production.
Siemens`s chipmaking unit Infineon Technologies AG last week denied a report in the German daily Bild newspaper saying that it will buy chips from Atmel.
The 1.7 billion mark facility, built by Siemens in 1995, closed down in August, 1998 after 14 months of operations, due to a worldwide overcapacity in semiconductors. It employed 1,100 workers.
Siemens` shares fell as much as 5.89 euros, or 3.3 percent, to 174.01 euros, valuing the company at more than 104 billion euros ($89 billion).
