Xybernaut(R) Announces Fully Hands-Free Control Software for Wearable PCs; Release of XyberSpeech(TM)
Voice-Activation Software Significant Step Toward Speech-Centric Operating System Wearable Use BOEBLINGEN,
Germany, and FAIRFAX, Va., Sept. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Xybernaut Corporation (Nasdaq: XYBR - news), the leader in
wearable computing and communications solutions, today announced XyberSpeech(TM), a software toolkit that allows users
to operate a PC completely by voice -- from booting and logon to shutdown and restart. This breakthrough product is
particularly significant because conventional PC operating systems now require keyboard or mouse control to initialize the
speech software after booting or to shut the system down. XyberSpeech(TM) is compatible with all existing Windows®
platforms as well as Linux, and is made available at no charge under the Linux concept of GNU Public Licensing. Together
with two sample applications, the XyberSpeech(TM) software can be downloaded from the website of Xybernaut GmbH, a
wholly owned subsidiary of Xybernaut, at www.xybernaut.de starting October 15, 2000. XyberSpeech(TM), which is
designed to run on Xybernaut`s proprietary Mobile Assistant® hardware platform, works with IBM ViaVoice® and allows
multiple users to log into a operating system by just speaking their personal ID code. For example, under XyberSpeech
control, a user can close all active applications and restart the system with a single word. The demo applications are designed
for a minimum system configuration of the base MA IV® unit, battery, and head- or wrist-mounted display with integrated
microphone. One demo application allows the user to start the system, invoke MS Outlook® and have e-mail messages read
out aloud. Using the available APIs (application program interfaces), XyberSpeech can easily be extended to Sun Star
Office® under Linux or MS Windows®. Another demo application invokes the Linguatec Personal Translator® for
translation of speech, which accepts voice input in one language and provides spoken output in the other. When operating in a
Windows® environment the CommandEditor module, or any other available text editor, can be used to define or maintain
customized scripts so that command scripts can be used across operating system boundaries. When operating in Linux, the
KeyComboEditor module allows users to associate the same scripts to a key or set of key combinations, so keys and spoken
commands are available simultaneously, giving the user the ultimate flexibility in interaction with their system. This scripting
concept also facilitates support of multiple spoken languages. ``With this initial set of XyberSpeech(TM) building blocks we
have taken wearable computing to a new level of usability, and now can support speech- centric and speech-only applications
and configurations,`` said Dr. Edwin Vogt, senior vice president for R&D at Xybernaut Corporation. ``We are taking steps to
accelerate software development in this direction in close cooperation with our software partners, Linguatec and Wearix in
Munich, Germany, and X-Info in Hungary. The overall objective of this program is to have software specifically designed for
hands-free operation using Xybernaut`s wearable PCs.`` About Xybernaut Corporation Xybernaut Corporation is the leading
provider of wearable computing hardware, software and services, bringing communications and full-function Pentium
computing power in a hands-free design to people when and where they need it. The Mobile Assistant IV (MA IV®),
Xybernaut`s wearable PC, runs all major operating systems on Intel x86 architecture, such as Windows or Linux. With the
MA IV, customers can realize immediate savings in maintenance and repair, diagnosis, inspection, inventory control and data
collection procedures. Xybernaut provides management and information technology consulting services, along with asset
management software, for telecommunications systems, roads, waterways, railways, utility, and pipelines. Solutions have been
developed for all major operating systems and architectures. Key industries using Xybernaut`s products include
manufacturing, distribution, transportation, government, and utilities. Headquartered in Fairfax, Virginia, Xybernaut has offices

Check out new IBM television ad during the Olympics.
Starting with the coverage of the Olympics and continuing
through the NFL season, IBM will be airing a revised version
of the “park bench” ad showing a person trading stocks in St.
Mark’s Square in Venice using a speech-activated wearable
computer.
This revised version will have the same visuals as the
original, but the voice-over will be slightly different to
emphasize wireless communications capabilities and that this
product is coming soon (replaces the “might be far out but
not far off” line).
The product that is referred to in this ad is the wearable
computer being jointly developed by IBM and Xybernaut that
was announced last May. As stated in that press release, we
continue to work with IBM in a number of areas to jointly
develop the market for wearable computers.
