Hallo otto12,

Also: Abwarten und Ruhe bewahren...

Moin zusammen!
An tuerk:
gerade mal 10% (Nasdaq).

Was will man mehr....

Ligand Reports 1999 Results; Ends Year With Three FDA Product Approvals and Cash of $49.2 Million
THURSDAY, MARCH 09, 2000 8:30 PM!!
- BusinessWire
SAN DIEGO, Mar 9, 2000 (BW HealthWire) --
Launched Panretin(R)Gel and ONTAK(R)in the U.S., Established a European Marketing and Distribution Presence,
Substantially Reduced Net Losses Ligand Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (Nasdaq:LGND) today reported revenues of $40.9 million for the year ended December 31, 1999, 2.3-fold greater than revenues of $17.7 million for the year ended December 31, 1998, a revenue increase of 131%.
Revenues for the fourth quarter ended December 31, 1999, were $12.4 million, compared to $4.3 million for the fourth quarter ended December 31, 1998, an increase of 188%. The net losses for the fourth quarter and year ended December 31, 1999, decreased substantially to $22.9 million ($0.48 per share) and $74.7 million ($1.58 per share), respectively, from net losses of $40.7 million ($0.93 per share) and $117.9 million ($2.92 per share) in the same periods in 1998. Excluding one-time charges for acquired in-process technology, a technology milestone payment and debt conversion expense, net losses for the fourth quarter and year ended December 31, 1999, also substantially decreased to $15.7 million ($0.33 per share) and $67.5 million ($1.43 per share), respectively, from net losses of $25.7 million ($0.59 per share) and $72.9 million ($1.80 per share) for the same periods in 1998.
"In 1999, we achieved a 2.3-fold multiple of revenues over 1998 and reduced substantially our net loss and operating loss for the year, with the fourth quarter accelerating that trend. This improvement was achieved even after some unique charges and events specific to 1999," said Paul V. Maier, Ligand Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. "In addition, Ligand`s 1999 financial results reflect a year in which we realigned our expense and capital structure to support the commercialization of our oncology products and lowered our break-even point to better position ourselves for profitability in 2000. Research and development expenses declined by $10.8 million, or 15.5%, in 1999 compared to 1998 due to reduced clinical and NDA expenses coupled with overall tighter expense controls. This reduction in development expenses in 1999 more than offset our increased investment in sales and marketing expenses.
Highlights of accomplishments in 1999 and early 2000:
1. Grew our North American oncology franchise
-- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved three Ligand
drugs in 1999: Panretin(R) gel, ONTAK(R), and Targretin(R)
capsules. Ligand executed the commercial launch of ONTAK and
Panretin gel in the U.S. in early 1999, and launched Targretin
capsules in the U.S. in January 2000.
-- Ligand received priority review status from the FDA for the new
drug application (NDA) submitted to the FDA in December 1999 for
Targretin gel to treat refractory early-stage CTCL. The FDA is
expected to complete its review of the NDA in June 2000.
-- Ligand accelerated Phase II trials of Targretin capsules to treat
moderate to severe plaque psoriasis and advanced breast cancer.
Results of these trials are expected in the second and third
quarters of 2000, respectively.
-- Elan Corporation, plc (Elan) completed enrollment in Phase III
clinical trials of Morphelan(TM) to treat chronic pain. Ligand has
U.S. marketing rights to Morphelan(TM) for the treatment of
chronic pain in cancer and HIV patients.
2. Established a European capability in anticipation of European
product approvals
-- Ligand formed Ligand Pharmaceuticals International, Inc. and
staffed the headquarters for European operations in London, with
key clinical, regulatory and marketing leadership.
-- Ligand submitted Marketing Authorization Applications in Europe
for Panretin gel for KS in February 1999 and Targretin capsules
for CTCL in November 1999.
-- Ligand signed exclusive marketing and distribution agreements for
ONTAK, Panretin capsules and Panretin gel, Targretin capsules and
Targretin gel with Ferrer Internacional S.A. in Spain, Portugal,
Greece, and Central and South America and Alfa Wassermann S.p.A.
in Italy.
3. Generated increased revenues from our collaborations due to
continued development of several product candidates and new
collaborations
-- American Home Products Corporation (AHP) announced plans to take
TSE424 into Phase III clinical trials for post-menopausal
osteoporosis in 2000. During 1999, AHP also advanced ERA923 for
breast cancer into human clinical development and WAY160910 into
human development track. WAY160910 may be useful in the
development of an estrogen-free oral contraceptive.
-- Pfizer Inc. announced plans to initiate Phase III clinical trials
in early 2000 for lasofoxifene to treat osteoporosis and breast
cancer.
-- Glaxo-Wellcome plc advanced two products, including GW544
currently in Phase I trials for diabetes, to exploratory
development for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
-- Eli Lilly and Company granted program sanction to work on the
second-generation Retinoid X Receptor (RXR) modulator and PPAR
co-agonist programs.
-- Ligand and Parke-Davis Pharmaceutical Research and Development
of Warner-Lambert Company entered into a collaboration for the
research and development of third-generation Selective Estrogen
Receptor Modulators (SERMs) in September 1999.
-- Ligand and Organon entered into a collaboration for the research
and development of small molecule compounds with potential effects
for the treatment and prevention of gynecological diseases
mediated through the progesterone receptor in February 2000.
4. Increased financial strength through improvements in capital
structure and sale of non-strategic assets
-- Ligand issued $60.0 million of convertible notes to Elan during
1999. Elan elected to convert a $20.0 million convertible note
into 2.4 million shares of Ligand common stock in December 1999
and an additional $20.0 million convertible note into 1.6 million
shares of Ligand common stock in March 2000.
-- Investors exchanged or exercised warrants to purchase 2.9 million
shares of Ligand common stock, generating net proceeds to Ligand
of $17.4 million in 1999.
-- Ligand contributed cash and technology to X-Ceptor Therapeutics,
Inc. in exchange for a minority investment in X-Ceptor and a right
to purchase all of the capital stock of X-Ceptor for a
predetermined price in 2002 or 2003. With private funding of $25.0
million, X-Ceptor may advance research in the field of orphan
nuclear receptors without Ligand bearing the direct management,
financing or full profit and loss responsibility.
-- During 1999, Hoffmann-La Roche Inc. (Roche) agreed to pay
royalties to Ligand subsidiary Seragen, Inc., on net sales of
Zenapax(R). In December 1999, Seragen sold rights to receive
royalties on net sales of Roche`s Zenapax and Novartis`s
Simulect(R) to Pharmaceutical Partners L.L.C. and its affiliates.
Seragen retains the right to receive certain milestones related to
Zenapax.
-- In early January 2000, Ligand sold the assets of Marathon
Biopharmaceuticals Inc., the manufacturing subsidiary of Seragen,
for $10.0 million. According to David E. Robinson, Ligand Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, "Our two product pipelines continued to expand and mature in 1999 at an extraordinary pace, with three product approvals in our Ligand Specialty Oncology Products (LSOP) business and four NCE additions and several Phase III advancements in our major drugs with Ligand Corporate Partner Products (LCPP). The learning curve of our first year of commercial operations together with key expansions of our sales and marketing capabilities completed in 1999 provide a firmer foundation for acceleration of our revenues essential to the Company`s march to profitability. ONTAK`s continued growth and penetration and the launch of Targretin capsules should be the best barometer of those expanded capabilities in 2000."
Comparison of 1999 versus 1998 Ligand reported revenues of $40.9 million for the year ended December 31, 1999, compared to revenues of $17.7 million for the year ended December 31, 1998, an increase of $23.2 million. For the fourth quarter ended December 31, 1999, revenues were $12.4 million compared to $4.3 million for the same quarter in 1998, an increase of $8.1 million. Increased revenues for the year ended December 31, 1999, versus the same period in 1998 were primarily attributable to an increase in product sales of $10.9 million resulting from the launch of ONTAK and Panretin gel in February 1999; $5.1 million earned under royalty arrangements entered into with Hoffmann-La Roche Inc. and Pharmaceutical Partners LLC in 1999; $3.25 million from marketing and distribution agreements entered into with Ferrer and Alfa Wassermann; $2.6 million from contract manufacturing performed at Marathon in 1999; and an increase in milestone revenues of $2.6 million resulting from the collaborations with Glaxo and American Home Products.
Ligand Pharmaceuticals Incorporated Ligand Pharmaceuticals Incorporated discovers, develops and markets new drugs that address critical unmet medical needs of patients in the areas of cancer, skin diseases, and men`s and women`s hormone-related diseases, as well as osteoporosis, metabolic disorders and cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases.
In addition to the recently approved Targretin(R) capsules, Ligand had two drugs approved during 1999 for marketing in the U.S. -- ONTAK(R) and Panretin(R) gel -- that are being marketed through its specialty cancer and HIV-center sales force in the U.S. Targretin(R) gel is currently under review by the FDA for marketing approval in the U.S., and two additional oncology-related products -- Morphelan(TM) (licensed from Elan) and Panretin(R) capsules -- are in late-stage development. Ligand`s proprietary drug discovery and development programs are based on its leadership position in gene transcription technology, primarily related to Intracellular Receptors (IR) and Signal Transducers and Activators of Transcription (STATs).

key clinical, regulatory and marketing leadership.

Hallo an alle,

Also Lindwurm,
