Dollar hits but Amcor has lifted its game


The world`s largest producer of PET soft-drink bottles, Amcor, shrugged off earnings eroded by $17 million thanks to the strong currency to post a higher profit and higher dividend for the December half year.
And the second half would be stronger, even if the dollar stays at US79c, chief executive Russell Jones said yesterday. Should the exchange rate stay around present levels, it would cost Amcor about $40 million off its bottom line, he said, but that would be offset by improved performance across the group.
Directors lifted the interim dividend from 15c to 16c a share, which will take slightly more than half the 29.8c earnings a share produced by the profit of $188 million after tax.
The share price discount under the dividend reinvestment scheme has been reduced to zero, as directors believe the group`s cash flows are sufficient to support acquisitions and its earnings large enough to underwrite new capital raisings, debt or equity.
Mr Jones said a rise in return on funds employed from 10.3 to 11 per cent in the December half was "a pretty good outcome given the circumstances".

Apart from the dollar`s impact on translation of overseas earnings, Amcor was held back by "generally poor economic conditions" in several countries.
Recent acquisitions Arca, Rexam Healthcare Flexibles and Alcoa PET all performed well.
The largest acquisition since Amcor split from PaperlinX, the $2.88 billion PET operations of Schmalbach-Lubeca, powered ahead even as Amcor`s previously owned North American operations ran into trouble.
The PET division, the largest, with revenues of $1.54 billion, reported an 11 per cent drop in underlying earnings before interest, tax and amortisation (EBITA), although it was up 10 per cent in US dollars.
The Schmalbach-Lubeca plants in the US lifted volumes and earnings by 15 per cent but a
16 per cent rise of the Canadian dollar against the US dollar wrecked water exports from Canada to the US and cut demand for PET bottles in Canada.
The US fibre-packaging business Sunclipse halted its slide and was up on the results of the preceding June half, although still down 35 per cent from the previous first half.
The second largest division, Australasia, posted a 16 per cent jump in EBITA on almost unchanged revenues. Further restructuring in fibre packaging, folding cartons and flexible packaging is under way.
The share price eased 22c to $7.64 yesterday. The record date for the dividend is March 11.
