Starbucks launches cashless coffee

STARBUCKS is taking another step towards keeping a stranglehold on the coffee shop sector with its launch today of a plastic card which can be loaded with any amount from £2 to £150 - so people can still get their caffeine fix even if they run out of cash.

Unveiled with the strapline "Starbucks Card - great coffee now has its own currency", it can be used at outlets in the UK, US, Canada, Australia and Thailand by people on holiday or business.

The card can be registered at www.starbucks.co.uk so the balance is protected against theft or loss. Customers can check their balance, view recent transactions online and receive information on new products.

A Starbucks Card was first introduced in North America in 2001 - where 100 million cards have now been activated - but this is the first time it has been available in the UK.

Starbucks has carried out research to coincide with the launch. The survey results found a "cashless Britain" where two out of five people have found themselves stranded at high street tills without enough money to pay for their goods.

People are carrying very little cash and nearly a third of women take less than £5 with them to work on a Monday morning.

Starbucks said 23 per cent of Brits have arrived in a foreign country without the cash to buy a drink or sandwich. Another 15 per cent have run out of cash while on holiday, while 5 per cent of men have found themselves penniless on a date.

Phil Bread, managing director at Starbucks Coffee Company (UK), said: "The card can be used in stores in the UK and four other countries around the world, making it the perfect companion for people travelling overseas.

"It will enhance the Starbucks experience for customers, allowing them to buy their daily cup of coffee quickly and easily."

Starbucks sees 2,400 new stores in fiscal year '07

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (Reuters) - Starbucks Corp. (SBUX.O: Quote, Profile, Research) will open 2,400 stores in its 2007 fiscal year and will have 20,000 stores worldwide within seven years, a senior executive said on Monday.

Colman Cuff, Starbucks' director of trading and operations, said the new stores would be spread among the United States and worldwide markets, with Asian growth driven by China.

"In fiscal year 2006 we opened more stores than were forecast, and we will better that in fiscal year 2007," Cuff said at the Sintercafe coffee industry conference in Costa Rica. The 2006 fiscal year ended on October 1.

Starbucks has more than 12,000 stores, including 8,800 in the United States.

The company expects China, where it has more than 400 stores, to one day be its biggest market outside the United States.

Offensichtlich hat Starbucks mit zunehmender Marktmacht und wachsendem Börsenkurs immer weniger für fairen Handel und Nachhaltigkeit übrig. Neues von Ethos Water ist schon ewig nicht mehr über den Ticker gekommen und die nachfolgende Info ist auch nicht erheiternd:

Ich habe als Konsequenz einen Teil meiner Gewinne bei Starbucks mitgenommen und bin nun am überlegen, wo ich sie nachhaltiger investieren kann.

Ich würde mich trotzdem freuen, wieder mal was von anderen Kaffeefreaks und Ökoträumern zu hören.

Die Kaffeehauskette Starbucks (Nachrichten/Aktienkurs) erreichte im August gegenüber der Vergleichsperiode des Vorjahres einen Anstieg des Nettoerlöses von 21%. Im Filialerlösbereich stellte sich ein Plus von 5% ein. Die von Thomson First Call erhobenen durchschnittlichen Analystenschätzungen liegen bei einem Plus von 4,2%.

Starbucks verteuerten sich nachbörslich um 1,32% auf 31,42 Dollar
