Baidu aims for 79 pct share of China search market

BEIJING, June 8 (Reuters) - China's top Internet search company Baidu aims to raise its share of China's PC and mobile search market to 79 percent next year, a senior executive said on Tuesday, helped by a Google retreat.

Baidu General Manager for Corporate Development Tang Hesong made the comments to reporters during a news conference on Tuesday.

The Chinese search engine captured more than 64 percent of China's search market in the first quarter, up from 58.4 percent in the fourth quarter, according to research firm Analysys International.

Baidu and Symbian Foundation Co-Establish Joint Laboratory to Enable Wireless ''Box Computing'' on Symbian Platform

BEIJING and LONDON and SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 06/08/10 -- Baidu, the world's largest Chinese search engine provider, and the Symbian Foundation, the non-profit organization responsible for the world's leading open source smartphone platform, today announced a strategic initiative where the two parties will co-establish a joint laboratory to stimulate the development and launch of wireless "box computing" tightly integrated with the Symbian platform. Combining Symbian's wireless expertise in smartphone platforms and Baidu's R&D strength in search engines, the two will drive the joint development, integration and launch of wireless "box computing" within the Symbian platform architecture. This will enable application and web developers to incorporate robust search functionality into their applications and leverage this 'platform within a platform' to expand the Symbian/Baidu ecosystem, bringing new applications and user experiences to Symbian devices and extending the reach of Baidu in the mobile marketplace.

According to this strategic agreement, the Symbian Foundation will open the necessary platform technology interfaces for Baidu to enable wireless "box computing" deep within the Symbian middleware layer, facilitating the full integration of Baidu's wireless "box computing" into the Symbian platform. Both sides intend to encourage third-party developers to incorporate "box computing" in applications and web services that support Symbian and the companies will jointly provide a complete "box computing" platform solution to handset manufacturers and operators. To promote "box computing" innovation on Symbian, the results of the Box Computing Joint Laboratory will be shared with the entire mobile industry and be made available through the Symbian Foundation's open source efforts.

According to a report by China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC)(1), by the end of 2009 the number of mobile internet users in China reached 233,000,000, which is approximately 60.8% of all internet users. The availability of Baidu's convenient and advanced "box computing" technology platform within the powerful Symbian platform will give mobile internet users improved access to information on the internet and also allows them to search information stored on the device, including pictures, music and SMS. The "box computing" platform has the potential to bring an unprecedented search experience to hundreds of millions of users.

According to Gartner(2), the Symbian platform has approximately 44% share of the global smartphone market, selling 24 million devices in Q1 2010 and it is projected that within three or four years there will be 1 billion devices using Symbian. Baidu has more than a decade of search technology experience and expertise and its search engine maintains a coverage rate of more than 95% in China. Moreover, as more people use mobile devices to access the internet, the "box computing" initiative will develop advanced technology to enable the next-generation global internet for mobile users, meaning this strategic cooperation of the two parties is very important for the wireless internet industry. Baidu's "box computing" vision will positively affect the mobile internet landscape and the Symbian platform will lead the market in internet integration capability ahead of competitors.

"The strategic cooperation with the Symbian Foundation is a part of Baidu's 'Box Computing' strategy and an important step for launching the wireless 'box computing' platform. Baidu will cooperate with its partners in the wireless industry with a more open attitude and bring more valuable services to its partners and users with leading technology innovations," noted Wang Zhan, the vice president of Baidu.

"Baidu has played a leading role in internet services, especially in China, and we look forward to having them share their expertise with the growing Symbian community," said Lee M. Williams, Executive Director of Symbian. "Additionally, we expect the integration of 'box computing' services in the Symbian platform to stimulate third-party developers worldwide to create a large body of innovative applications, leveraging Baidu's market-leading search and inquiry platform."

Susquehanna Adds Baidu.com to Best Ideas List in a Turbulent Market

      June 3, 2010 5:13 PM EDT

Susquehanna Chinese Internet and New Media stocks added to Best Ideas list in a turbulent market include:

Susquehanna maintains a 'Positive' rating on Baidu.com (Nasdaq: BIDU) and a $100 price target.

Thesis: Dominant player in the Chinese Internet search market (45% CAGR for next five years) after Google has pulled out of China. Search is becoming a mainstream media for large advertisers, as the industry value chain continues to mature. China’s ecommerce hitting an inflection point, benefits Baidu tremendously.

Catalyst: Revenue drivers are accelerating growth in monetization and keyword coverage after implementation of Phoenix Nest system. Margin expansion leads to EPS growing faster than top line.

Risk/Reward: China’s macro tightening in 2H may impact the cash flows of SMEs. We see downside risk at $60 (30x our CY11 GAAP EPS of $2.11), given we believe that Baidu could grow at a minimum of 30% in an unfavorable market. Upside to $100 based on our estimated price target for shares of BIDU.

Und sie läuft und läuft und läuft.... !!!

      weise rechtfertigen.

      Sonst noch wer an Bord?

      Gruß Karlll

Paid Search Ad Spending Rebounds in Q2
      by Craig Macdonald | May 27, 2010

As predicted in our first quarter (Q1) Global Paid Search Spend Analysis, spending by high-tech and consumer electronics companies is rebounding in the second quarter (Q2), from its 11.9% quarter-on-quarter decline between the 4th quarter (Q4) 2009 and the 1st quarter (Q1) 2010.

Our mid-quarter Q2 analysis projection shows that paid search spending in the high-tech and consumer electronics sector will be up an estimated 24.9% over Q1 – with Google leading the way with 29.9% increase, Yahoo up 11.3% and Bing down 13.3%.

There are three (3) main stories in second quarter that are of interest to paid search advertising professionals.

      1. The impact of the decision by Google to reposition its China business.
There is a large amount of interest on the part of our customers on how the market is reacting to Google’s Q1 announcement that due to privacy restrictions by the Chinese government the platform would relocate its Chinese business to Hong Kong. With several months of data now, what we are seeing is that overall paid search spending in China is up nearly 85% from Q1 — with spend on Baidu up nearly 210%. Spending from Q1 to Q2 on Google is up — but far more modestly — around 43%. Overall strong growth aside, it appears that the prognostications of massive defections from Google are unfounded — the spending on the network in China remains robust. However, this strategy by Google clearly is a boon to Baidu — whose spend is up markedly.
      2. What happened to the “Cha-Ching” in Bing?
In Q3 2009, we saw huge growth in usage of the Bing network — 3-4 months after the official “re-launch” from the MSN platform. Since then, growth has lagged. Why? CPAs on Bing have remained higher than Yahoo and Google in the US — about 50% higher than Yahoo and 2X higher than Google. It seems that marketers, after giving Bing a chance — have slowed growth and are approaching the network more tepidly. We have received briefings over the past few weeks from the teams at Yahoo-Bing — and the integration is proceeding on plan. However, the fundamental dynamics of the networks have not changed. In Q2 of this year, we are projecting that after three quarters of modest market share losses to Bing (5-6%), Google is going to take about 1-2% of those market share points back. Budget planners at advertisers should react accordingly.
      3. Transactional Costs Go Up.
As is always the case with our analysis, given that spend in Q2 grew faster than inventory, transaction costs went up. With the strong growth in Google spend, clicks per conversions (CPCs) on the platform were also up nearly 12% and clicks per accounts (CPAs) were up 23%. This is something that marketers need to monitor in order to ensure their ROI goals are being met as the spend levels increase throughout the year.

In our Q1 2010 report, Covario predicted that spending in 2010 would be 14-18% above 2009 levels. With the strong rebound in spending in Q2, we hold to this projection and recommend that search marketers plan on similar average budget increases in order to maintain online market share.

ACTIONABLE INSIGHT 1: Strong growth on Baidu necessitates that marketers executing search program in the China should increase spending to maintain market share for branding purposes. However, the traditional issues with the system (very poor information system) continue to plague marketers, making reporting and performance management problematic.

ACTIONABLE INSIGHT 2: The growth in Bing spend seems to be subsiding. We are projecting reductions in spend on the network between Q2 and Q1 (unless something changes in June). This is due to steadily higher CPAs advertisers are experiencing on the network.

ACTIONABLE INSIGHT 3: Spend in Q2 is projected to be 25% higher than Q1. So our forecast of budget increases of 14-18% to maintain market share looks solid.

Also, vor gut einer Woche lagen wir im Tageshoch bei 81,58.

Derjenige, dem der Kurs da zu sehr enteilt war, kann jetzt zu fast
18 % geringeren Kursen einsteigen. Oder er wartet noch, vielleicht
geht ja noch mehr in Richtung Süden.
