The All-in-Wonder X1800 XL 256MB bumps up the gaming and media performance of the AiW Radeon X800 XL and XT models, while sporting a price tag that is almost too good to be true.

      TV Tuner and Multimedia Performance

Starting with the All-in-Wonder Radeon X800 XT, the TV tuner portion of the AiW design underwent a major overhaul. Gone were the bulky tuners of previous models, and in its place sat a Microtune MT2030 silicon tuner, which is so diminutive that you can fit a few inside a standard postage stamp. This saves on real estate, reducing the tuner footprint by 20%, and allows power saving benefits as well. Unfortunately, this technological shift, along with the TV tuner connector being placed on wire off the I/O dongle, contributed to some performance issues, with delayed channel switching and some hitches evident with fast-motion action.

Many of these issues were corrected with the All-in-Wonder Radeon X800 XL, as the TV tuner connector was returned to the card's backplate and the model upgraded to the Microtune MT2121 silicon tuner. This provided enhanced response times and better fast-motion performance, and while not totally up to the standards of an old school hardware tuner, it was a vast improvement. The All-in-Wonder X1800 XL 256MB shares the MT2121 tuner, and offers better response times than the All-in-Wonder Radeon X800 XT, not to mention providing top-notch TV playback in ultra-fast motion areas like sports or action movies. In our opinion, and having used and re-tested a few All-in-Wonder cards, this is as good as it gets with a silicon tuner.

The Theater 200 chips again powers the video decoding portion of the All-in-Wonder X1800 XL 256MB card. The Theatre 200 captures analog video signals (S-Video, composite, component) and converts them to digital video, while decoding stereo sound to digital, for both internal and external output. This is the real A/V power behind the All-in-Wonder Radeon X1800 XL, and the ATI Theatre 200 also captures video directly from Cable TV, VCR and DVD, in both standard and ATI-proprietary formats. This is certainly not bad news, as the Theater 200 has powered ATI All-Wonder cards for years, but with the newer Theater chips on the market, we hoped that ATI would make the leap to a more recent model.

The most impressive of the bunch is certainly the TV module, which allows (with a TV cable attached), the ability to watch television on the PC, to record shows, utilize TV-on-Demand, and export stored programs to file. One of the more amazing features of the ATI TV module is the ability to not only view television through the standard window or full-screen mode, but also using three very innovative methods. The first is using the Thruview Window (shown below-left), which presents a transparent TV window, while the second option, the Thruview Desktop (below-middle), expands the transparency to the entire Windows desktop. The two methods are very functional, as all programs, icons and taskbars remain visible, but you can still keep track of your favorite TV show, movie, or sports team. The third method is more conventional, and the Video Desktop (below-right) replaces your Windows wallpaper with the ATI TV backdrop. This means that programs will overlap on the TV broadcast, but it is still one extremely cool feature to enable.

LG Electronics' Net Profit Nearly Doubles on Strong TV Sales
      By Evan Ramstad

LG Electronics Co. said its first-quarter net profit nearly doubled, boosted by a strong performance at its television-component joint venture LG.Philips LCD Co.

The company's profit rose to 160 billion won ($160 million) during the quarter, from 83 billion won in the same period a year earlier. That includes a 21 billion won gain from the first-quarter profit of LG.Philips LCD, in which it owns a 37.9% stake. The venture recorded a loss in ...

Microtune's New Ultra Low-Power, Dual-Standard Tuner Enables Broadcast and Mobile Digital TV on Portable Devices
Thursday April 20, 12:30 pm ET
Supporting both DVB-T and DVB-H broadcasts, and with a Mere 350 mWatts of Power Consumption, Microtune's New Silicon Tuner Brings TV Options to Portable Multimedia Platforms

PLANO, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 20, 2006--Extending its family of ultra low-power tuners, Microtune®, Inc. (Nasdaq:TUNE - News) today introduced a new dual-standard, dual-band tuner chip that receives and tunes both digital terrestrial TV and mobile broadcast TV signals for portable applications.

When implemented into consumer multimedia devices, the new Mobile MicroTuner(TM) MT2266 enables users to access a variety of content--digital TV broadcasts, mobile TV broadcasts, digital radio and teletext--across the digital video broadcast-terrestrial (DVB-T) and digital video broadcast-handheld (DVB-H) standards. With power consumption of only 350 mW, half that of conventional DVB-T tuners, the MT2266 has minimal impact on the battery life of portable platforms.

Original equipment and original design manufacturers can take advantage of the MT2266 tuner to deliver dual-standard TV capabilities and multimedia features on products as diverse as notebook PCs, USB sticks, PCI Express cards, portable DVB-T receivers, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and personal media players. The tuner, which supports both the UHF and VHF (Band III) frequency bands, is also ideal for diversity systems, where low power is a critical consideration.

"Our MicroTuner family of high-performance tuners enables digital TV across multiple devices, platforms and standards, and our new MT2266 tuner is an important product addition in meeting the specific performance and power requirements of portable platforms," said James A. Fontaine, Microtune President and CEO. "Our new tuner enables manufacturers to develop cost-optimized portable products that give consumers flexible TV viewing and multimedia options and that deliver superior reception quality and reliability. At the same time, they can add this capability without the fear of rapidly draining the battery."

      MT2266 Product Overview

Based on Microtune's silicon tuner architecture, patented technology and power management techniques, the MT2266 is a direct-conversion, single-chip broadband TV tuner engineered to give manufacturers design flexibility and low operating power, at low cost, without compromising high performance. The MT2266 is optimized for UHF and VHF Band III frequencies with support for the DVB-T and DVB-H standards. It is engineered to deliver robust performance based on the NorDig Unified and MBRAI specifications.

Measuring only 6 x 6-square millimeters in a 40-pin QFN package, the MT2266 contains all active circuitry required to implement a complete radio frequency (RF) to baseband function. As with other Microtune tuner products, the MT2266 is characterized by a high level of integration that minimizes the need for external parts, including the requirement for an external low-noise amplifier, IF saw filters, and transformer balun. This architecture reduces both total solution cost and the total power budget, while supporting the significantly reduced footprint designs of leading portable device manufacturers. The MT2266 operates from a 2.7V power supply and consumes as little as 350 mW, with multiple power down modes.

      Price and Availability

Currently sampling with manufacturers, the MT2266 is expected to be in production next quarter. Reference Designs are also expected to be available in Q2 2006 and will accelerate development of consumer end products. The MT2266 is priced at $5.00/unit in quantities of 10,000.
