Vizrt offers up another record quarter
      May 10, 2007 - 9:04:54 AM

Vizrt Ltd. says its first quarter of 2007 results set yet another record revenue quarter reaching $19.9M compared to revenues of $12.0M in Q1 2006. Revenue increased by 66%, of which 41% was organic growth. EBIT was $3.9M, up 78% compared to EBIT of $2.2M in Q1 2006 and EBITDA (excluding taxes, interest, depreciation, amortization of intangible assets and deferred stock-based compensation) went up 89% to $5.0M compared to $2.7M in Q1 2006. Also $3.7M net profit was up 63% compared to last year's same time frame.

Mr. Bjarne Berg, President and CEO, commented; "The outlook for Vizrt is dependent on how well we manage to integrate the MAM products (Ardendo) into the existing salesforce and to get enough specialists hired to answer to the worldwide demand. If we manage to do that, we believe we will continue to grow in an existing pace."

Berg says the company is working on a downscaled version of the Viz|Engine, Multi Platform Solution (MPS), which can accommodate (profiled) 3D-graphics with a nicer look on cell phones and on web-sites.

"The MPS project is progressing according to plans and received the NAB engineering award at the show in Las Vegas in April," he adds. "We are expecting to make first deliveries to customers both within and outside the traditional broadcast industry within the coming months. To explore the various options to realize the full potential of the MPS product, including the spin off option, we have decided to engage external advisors."

Backlog as of today bei 22 Millionen, davon 9 Millionen Ardendo.

NAB2007: The Year of the YouTube Effect

      by Deborah D. McAdams, ~ April 16, 2007

Deborah D. McAdams is the Managing Editor of TV Technology Magazine.

Ask vendors to characterize this year’s NAB convention, and it’s all about hi-def, or file-based workflows, or bit-rates, compression; cell phones, 5.1 audio, IPTV, the DTV transition deadline, or YouTube.
      Especially YouTube.

“I’ve been suggesting for years that the organization consider changing its name to the National Association of Mediacasters,” said Rush Beesley, president of RushWorks, an automation outfit in Carrolton, Texas. “Radical? Yes. Timely? Probably. The bottom line is money, and with companies like YouTube selling for well over $1 billion ... there has to be an exciting sense of ‘hey, I can do that!’ And ‘that’ can be done with a trivial investment.”

      TALK OF THE INDUSTRY

Of all the events over the last year that resonated within the broadcast industry, the sale of YouTube, a user-generated video-posting site, to Google for $1.65 billion, got everyone’s attention. This was in a year when Congress set a loophole-free end date on analog broadcasting, phone companies launched fiber-optic TV service, and companies like Wal-Mart started selling movies online.

YouTube nevertheless was the game changer. It represented a watershed acceptance of both amateur productions and Internet video in general, which will have far-reaching consequences across the A/V equipment industry.

“We’ll certainly be responding with an Internet ‘automation appliances’ in the very near future,” Beesley said.

Cameron Francis, CEO of Norwegian router maker Network Electronics U.S. division, said the rise of Internet video will drive improvements in compression schemes.

“People will eventually expect to see a similar quality over the Internet as they do on their flat screens,” he said.

Teri Zastrow of Ikegami envisioned the same demand for quality driving HD acquisition.

“Quality is paramount here,” she said. “The better the quality of the original video, the better it will look after it’s been edited, compressed and passed through the Internet.”

For Mark Gray, the YouTube effect represents an opportunity in retro media. Gray is president of SAMMA Systems, a New York-based media preservation firm.

“There is an infinite amount of broadcast content sitting on analog tapes that needs to be transferred onto digital files to be monetized, and that’s what we do,” he said.

In many cases, the YouTube effect is driving companies along their more-or-less traditional trajectories.

For instance, storage and traffic aren’t significantly different across various distribution platforms, said Steve Krant, vice president of sales and marketing for Sundance, the Dallas-based automator owned by Avid.

      ACROSS PLATFORMS

“It still requires digital storage of content and reliable means to catalog, retrieve and play-to-air — or whatever — and report back to the billing office,” he said. “That’s what broadcast automation does for a living.”

Similarly, Vizrt, the graphics gear company in Bergen, Norway, is simply adapting to the medium.

“Our approach is to enable higher quality content on more platforms while retaining the same creation process for content producers,” said Dr. François Laboirie, vice president of product marketing at Vizrt. “This includes Internet video content.”

Ascent Media Network Services is already hip-deep in IP distribution and content repurposing. Internet video just adds to the momentum, said Ascent Senior Vice President of Technology Stavros Hilaris.

Even companies with products that have no direct contact with the Internet are feeling the YouTube effect. Mayville Products Corp. is a rack maker in Mayville, Wisc.

“Internet video is a driver for our overall business,” said Dan Eder, president of the company. “More servers, either at the ISP or broadcaster means more rack and cabinet needs.”

Maria Porco’s company, X2O Media Inc. in Montreal, Quebec, makes digital signage.

“We have had requests from customers wishing to display Internet video on screens,” she said, “so it’s definitely having an impact.”

Even at CoolTouch Monitors in Marina Del Ray, Calif., Vice President Cian de Buitler does not discount the YouTube effect.

“As an LCD manufacturer, only a small portion of our business is with streaming media, and even less can be correlated with Internet video,” he said.

“However, indirectly, it will eventually make itself felt for us. If the traditional broadcast market does not adequately adapt to the rise of Internet video and positively leverage its advantages of an increased content pool and unprecedented delivery opportunities, it will inevitably lead to lower engineering budgets due to competition.”

Prague's Nova TV Deploys Pebble Beach Neptune For New Playout Facility

      Tue, 22nd, May 2007

Pebble Beach System's Neptune automation system has been selected for an installation at Prague-based Nova TV, part of Central European Media Enterprises (CME), a leading commercial television broadcaster in Central and Eastern Europe.

The Nova TV project, for which systems integration is being undertaken by TSL, will deliver a complete end-to-end playout facility at the broadcaster’s Prague headquarters, based around Neptune automation.

Pebble Beach will supply a three-channel playout system with main and backup device controllers and five Client operator positions. The system will employ Neptune’s N+n redundancy feature providing strong cost effective resilience to potential failures without the need for fully mirrored playout. Neptune will also control a 26 port SeaChange server, VizRT graphics devices and Harris Iconmaster master control switchers.

Neptune was selected for its easy to use software interface and its flexibility to integrate with other devices in the Nova TV system. The system was also able to meet one of Nova’s key requirements for a customisable solution that would fit its specific workflow needs and allow for future expansion.

“Having installed Neptune at [Nova TV’s sister company] Pro TV a year earlier, we had first-hand experience of the system’s reliability and the good price/performance ratio it offers. Added to high levels of after sales support from Pebble Beach and the recommendation from TSL, this convinced us to use Neptune once again for the Nova TV project,” said Ivo Ferkl, Technical Director, Nova TV.

There is always something new to see at Broadcast Live. As well as brand new products making their worldwide debuts, coming as it does after NAB the show is also the perfect venue for the world's manufacturers to introduce their brand new technology into the European market. 2007 is a particularly fecund year too, so in strict alphabetical order here are some of the new things you can see at BroadcastLIVE.

Apple will be showing the multifunctional, multitalented Final Cut Studio 2 in the UK for the first time. Based around Final Cut Pro 6, which introduces Apple's ProRes 422 format for uncompressed HD quality at SD file sizes not to mention support for mixed video formats and framerates in a single timeline. It also includes: Motion 3; Soundtrack Pro 2; Compressor 3; DVD Studio Pro 4.2 for SD and HD DVD authoring; and introduces Color, a professional colour grading and finishing application. And it does all this for £849, which is competitive to say the least.

Cammotion will demonstrate Vortex, a patent pending design that enables DoPs to film vertical tracking shots from 0 to 30 metres in an extremely small footprint. Capable of operating in harsh conditions and on uneven ground, the system will lift a camera the full distance in 15 seconds. A remote head provides standard pan and tilt features.

There will be lots of new things on display from Eyeheight, including the interesting new enigmaHD data codec. enigmaHD basically allows programme production and machine-control information to be sent through an HD-SDI channel at up to 32 kbit/s on user-selectable lines of the HD signal stream. Things that this helps achieve include forwarding camera dynamics to CGI devices, embedding captions and delivering recorded-media details such as aspect ratio, date, time and clock number.

EVS is showcasing a raft of new kit, including [IP] Director Version 4, its integrated production management software. New functionalities include an intuitive playlist management module, a series of dynamic tools for easier and better control of EVS XT[2] servers, and a brand new user interface.

First time in Europe for JVC Professional's new HD microwave equipped camera system. The ProHD Libre system provides native 50P HD capture, recording and transmission through a compact, on-board camera-back transmitter, developed for JVC by BMS. A fully equipped system, complete with camera, lens, microwave transmitter and receiver can be configured for under ?30k as opposed to the more usual ?100k plus.

Leader Electronics is another company with lots on show. CINELITE, for instance, enables people to determine optimal camera exposure settings much more precisely than is possible with a traditional luminance meter. By detecting the actual signal levels captured during pre-shoot line-up rather than just displaying local light intensity, CINELITE allows a camera's full dynamic range to be used.

Marquis Broadcast is launching PostBox. Designed for fast media transfers from Avid Technology editing systems to a range of servers, PostBox hopes to end the frankly laborious task of outputting to tape and re-ingesting media into the playout server. The company is also extending support for its Medway media highway product to XDCAM HD and DVCPro 100.

Over at OmniBus, the company is showing iTX 1.1, its so-called category-defying product that replaces all of the functions of a broadcast master control and playout chain in a single software application. Pharos, meanwhile, is showing the latest generation of its Mediator media asset management platform. This incorporates end-to-end workflow control for any media organisation needing to manage and expand its output more efficiently.

Away from broadcast technology, many facilities are coming up against the wall of having to produce bulk numbers of DVDs and BDs in short order. Primera's new Network Disc Publisher gives everyone in the office the ability to produce their own professional-quality discs sent from an unlimited number of networked users.

The Ramses MSC new digital recording, editing and mixing system came about as a result of a strategic alliance between Merging Technologies, makers of the internationally respected Pyramix digital audio workstation, and Smart AV, the Australian manufacturer of the Smart range of console control surfaces. The alliance is designed to take full advantage of Merging's new 256-channel MassCore console mix engine (also unveiled at NAB) which has been fully integrated with Pyramix into a newly designed range of small, medium and large control surfaces. See them on the Total Audio Solutions stand.

Tektronix' PQA500 Picture Quality Analyzer incorporates eight new Tektronix patents to support what the company claims is the most complete suite of measurement and diagnostic tools for picture quality analysis ,including full support of HD formats

Finally, Vizrt is introducing several new products into Europe, headed by Viz|Video Wall ER (Extreme Resolution), a software system that automatically distributes scenes from any Vizrt graphic software application to a shared cluster of Viz|Engine renderers. The Viz|Engines output graphics of unlimited resolution to a large-scale video wall for live operation, with a Barco-powered 1.5m x 2m wall on display at the show.

With all these new launches to see, Broadcast LIVE will be bustling with new and exciting broadcasting technology this year.

Three New Installations Of Vizrt Software Indicate Growing Success In Middle East

Vizrt products used to launch new stations, provide election and weather coverage
Bergen, Norway, May 30, 2007 – Vizrt, the world’s leading producer of real-time 2D and true 3D graphics system for TV, has expanded the widespread use of its systems into new areas of the Middle East and Africa. Vizrt, based in Norway, recently completed several extended projects with three television stations located in Lebanon, Bahrain and Egypt. Vizrt systems already enjoy significant deployment in Jordan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Pakistan.

Lebanon’s National Broadcasting Network (NBN TV) went on air March 1, 2007 with Vizrt’s Viz|Virtual Studio, a module that lets producers enhance fixed sets or create simulated 3D studio environments, and Viz|Trio CG system, a powerful real-time 3D character generator. “Viz|Virtual Studio allows us to update our look or add a unique element of creativity to our programs without having to invest in periodic set updates or remodels,” said NBN CEO Kassem Soueid. NBN Technical Manager Mohamad Daher added, “The intuitive and interactive features of the Viz|Trio CG system not only enhance our production value, they simplify on-air changes to graphics during any of our live programs.” Vizrt delivered a turnkey solution with Lebanon based system integrator and Vizrt local representative, Broadcast & Communication Systems s.a.l.

Vizrt collaborated with Montreal, Canada based systems integrator, Astucemedia, on an election coverage project with Bahrain TV, the governmental network in Bahrain. Bahrain’s Parliamentary elections for the Chamber of Deputies or lower house of Parliament take place every four years. Voter turnout for the first round of elections reached 72%, with a second run-off election taking place in December.

Vizrt and Astucemedia designed a graphic solution for the network’s Arabic and English channels for both rounds of elections covering five administrative divisions and forty constituencies within the Kingdom of Bahrain. In just three weeks before the first election round, Bahrain TV implemented a complete election solution using Vizrt 3D, user interface and on-air operator. Bahrain Radio and Television News Center Technical Manager Engineer Yousif M. AL-Butti said, "The interactive features, the output quality and the incredible art of animations Bahrain TV was able to use during our election coverage gave us tremendous flexibility to make on-screen changes. We plan to add more Vizrt applications to further develop our programs.” Vizrt also plans to work with Bahrain TV on a business channel in the future.

Vizrt and Astucemedia also collaborated to produce a graphic turnkey solution for Beeaty TV in Egypt. Beeaty TV provides information on weather and the environment to its Egyptian viewers. Data from Storm Weather Center, the leading commercial weather service provider, was applied to Viz|Weather, a complete 3D as well as HD/SD real-time weather solution with countless visualization possibilities and easily accessible, accurate weather data. Astucemedia provided the station’s graphics design. The system allows Beeaty TV to control, switch and manipulate graphics and animation, driven by weather data, in seconds.

Bergen, Norway, June 6, 2007 – Vizrt, a leading provider of real-time, integrated broadcast graphics software, has introduced the latest version of its Viz|World mapping software – Viz|World Version 1.2. Viz|World is a template-based solution that enables users to create branded maps and geographical animations in real-time from within most of Vizrt’s control applications. Viz|World’s embedded interface within other Vizrt software applications allows users to quickly generate branded, animated maps and add them to graphic templates or directly to a 3D scene.

The new version of Viz|World is now fully integrated with Microsoft’s Virtual Earth platform—for on-demand delivery of high-resolution satellite and aerial imagery. Through this product integration, broadcasters can now use imagery products stored on Microsoft’s Internet-based Virtual Earth platform with the control they are accustomed to with Viz|World. 3D graphical elements can be added to the satellite imagery in real-time using a template-based system.

Viz|World is also now also fully integrated with the newest version of Viz|Artist – Version 3.0. Among the many advances inherent in Version 3.0 are: RTT Advanced Materials plug-ins for photo-realistic rendering of 3D objects and materials, new Visual Data Tools (VDT) plug-ins for increased financial and statistic database functionality, and enhanced interactivity with touch screen devices.

Viz|World is powered by Viz|Curious World Map technology. Maps or templates are first prepared using Viz|Curious World Maps and Viz|Artist design software. Those templates and maps are stored within a Viz|World server that can be accessed by any number of users throughout an organization. Maps are available to clients such as Viz|Content Pilot control and management, Viz|Artist, Viz|Trio CG, and Viz|Weather software. The Viz|Engine renderer accesses the Viz|World server to play out the maps.

“Thanks to the power of our template-based system, users can define the look and feel of maps with consistent branding in real-time,” said Halid Hatic, VP Business Development, Mapping Technologies, Vizrt. “From within the familiar Vizrt software, users can easily define how the map operates, whether it’s the inclusion of 3D objects or animation, and the operator can play out the content of the map. Previously, maps created within a 2D template could not be changed once rendered. With this latest version of Viz|World, maps can be changed at the last minute – at any stage of the process.”

A key enhancement to the new Text-to-Air system is the ability to support a variety of display formats using a rendering engine provided by Vizrt.

VDS provided the FOX News Channel with a real-time display of SMS text message for televising election-polling data.

Building on a system that was used to support FOX’s coverage of the president’s state of the union address on January 23rd, the enhanced Text-to-Air system supports features to aide production personnel during live productions.

The system was used during a broadcast in which viewers were invited to send a text message to a dedicated SMS short code, indicating which candidate they felt performed best during the debate. The results were then displayed live on-air throughout the broadcast.

The system retrieves data in real time from a back-end system provided by Motricity. A key enhancement to the new system is the ability to support a variety of display formats using a rendering engine provided by Vizrt.

New displays for call-to-action or live data representations can be scripted and saved in a database for future use. In addition to support for the Vizrt render engine, the system can drive graphics systems from other major manufacturers including Chyron, Harris and Miranda.

Vizrt powers election graphics for Bahrain TV

      Jun 8, 2007

Vizrt has collaborated with Montreal-based systems integrator Astucemedia on an election coverage project with Bahrain TV, the governmental network in Bahrain.

Bahrain’s parliamentary elections for the Chamber of Deputies, or lower house of Parliament, occur every four years. Voter turnout for the first round of elections reached 72 percent with a second run-off election in December.

The companies designed a graphics solution for the network’s Arabic and English channels for both rounds of elections covering five administrative divisions and 40 constituencies within Bahrain. Three weeks before the first election round, Bahrain TV implemented a complete election solution using Vizrt 3D, the user interface and on-air operator. Vizrt also plans to work with Bahrain TV on a business channel in the future.

      Viz|World offers fast 3-D maps

      Jun 11, 2007 8:00 AM

Maps or templates are first prepared using Viz|Curious World Maps and Viz|Artist design software.
Viz|World is a template-based application that enables users to create 3-D branded maps and geographical animations in real time from an embedded interface within most of Vizrt’s control applications.

The new version of Viz|World is now integrated with Microsoft’s Virtual Earth platform, enabling on-demand delivery of high-resolution satellite and aerial imagery. Through this integration, broadcasters can use imagery products stored on Microsoft’s Internet-based Virtual Earth platform with the control they are accustomed to with Viz|World. 3-D graphical elements can be added to the satellite imagery in real time using a template-based system.

Viz|World is also now integrated with the newest version of Viz|Artist 3.0. Among the improvements in version 3.0 are RTT Advanced Materials plug-ins for photo-realistic rendering of 3-D objects and materials, new Visual Data Tools plug-ins for increased financial and statistic database functionality, and enhanced interactivity with touch-screen devices.

Viz|World is powered by Viz|Curious World Map technology. Maps or templates are first prepared using Viz|Curious World Maps and Viz|Artist design software. Those templates and maps are stored within a Viz|World server that can be accessed by any users throughout an organization.

Irish pay-TV broadcaster Setanta Sports will begin broadcasting select English Premiership football matches later this year, in direct competition with incumbent broadcaster Sky Sports. To optimize its coverage, Setanta intends to play back any incident from the perfect angle and to revolutionize game analysis.

Setanta appointed Alston Elliot to design templates and manage its graphics output. The southern England-based firm designs and supplies on-air graphics to a variety of broadcasters for snooker, rugby and association football but is primarily known for innovating cricket packages for Sky Sports and M-Net in South Africa.

The company operates 60 Vizrt licenses for playout, with three installed in each of five mobile units. The firm has devised its own software to run its templates and interface with an input and logging software.

For Sky Sports cricket, for example, the company supplies a graphics van to the main OB supplier, usually CTV. An Alston Elliot-trained operator will sit alongside the commentary position and manually input data, such as direction of runs and shot type, and update the score. In conjunction with the OB director, the operator will suggest or select graphics or captions at various stages in play. Clearly, getting a statistic wrong would constitute a serious error. For darts coverage, the scoring is even faster and mathematically more complex, so the operator's job is even more pressured.

Vizrt Grafiken überzeugen bei der Darstellung der
      türkischen Wahlergebnisse

Bergen, Norwegen, 25. Juli 2007. Vizrt Ltd. (Frankfurt Prime Standard: VIZ; Oslo Main List:

Barco and Vizrt demo integrated backdrop solutions at IBC ’07
      Aug 1, 2007 - 3:01:53 PM

At IBC 2007, Barco (Hall 1, Stand 235) and Vizrt (Hall 2, Stand 219) will demonstrate the two company’s best-of-breed backdrop solution. Vizrt and Barco recently completed the integration of Barco’s displays and processors with Vizrt’s 3D graphic renderer, Viz|Engine.

The combined Vizrt and Barco systems enable very high resolution backdrop outputs that allow the studio presenter to work interactively with the displayed graphic materials on set. This is achieved by integrating the high-resolution graphic output provided by Vizrt with Barco displays. It creates a more flexible set design capable of easily inserting interactive graphics and background scenes while maintaining the natural delivery of the presenters.

Barco’s IBC booth will feature a 3x3 times mDG50 50" OverView D series video wall system, that integrates cutting-edge DLP technology and is designed and optimized for use in 24/7 mission critical environments. Vizrt’s IBC booth will have a Barco 4x2 times cDG67 67" Overview D series video wall system utilizing Viz|Video Wall ER technology on display and Peyote Design’s interactive technology within its booth. The demonstration will highlight a complete production workflow solution, including integration with the full line of Vizrt software, including Viz|Trio character generator to control the real-time interactive show, Viz|Multi-Platform Suite (MPS) for real-time graphics and video content delivery to mobile devices; Viz|Curious Maps mapping software; and Viz|Quattro, a still and clip store workflow solution.

“The integration of our Viz|Video Wall ER technology with Barco’s versatile display technology brings our shared clients the industry’s most flexible solution for studio backdrop solutions,” said Petter Ole Jakobsen, Corporate Technical Officer, Vizrt. “By combining these best-of-breed technologies, we can assure our joint customers that their integration will go smoothly and that they will realize the most presenter-friendly and interactive solution possible for studio set designs.”

“The integration of our processors and display technology with Vizrt’s Viz|Video Wall ER technology is a natural fit,” said Alain Solomon, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Barco Security & Monitoring Division. “Therefore, with this relationship, we deliver more value to our joint customers and ensure high performance, real-time interoperability of the systems we provide our clients.”

Bergen. Norwegen, 8.

Kapitalrücklagen in Nominalkapital. So gleich im ersten Absatz des
Dokuments: "...on the basis of a capital increase from the Company's own
resources." Dann nochmal auf Seite 2, 5. Absatz: "...(by way of conversion
of capital reserves under shareholders' equity into share capital)".

      EVS Integrates with Vizrt
      Sep 6, 2007 - 2:35:59 PM

EVS has teamed up with broadcast graphics specialists Vizrt to dramatically improve creative flexibility and productivity.

Tight integration between Vizrt’s Viz|Trio character generator and [CE]CleanEdit software from EVS gives editors and journalists unprecedented control over their entire graphical asset base, via a highly interactive and easy-to-use interface.

“The advanced interface between the Vizrt Viz|Engine and the EVS XStore[2] server also means that graphics created during editing can be inserted as live graphics during playout for the first time,” says Steinar Søreide, OCTO at Vizrt.

EVS [CE]CleanEdit is a fast and intuitive non-linear editing system offering full integration with remote camcorders such as the Sony XDCAM and Panasonic P2, allowing journalists to edit stories at standard or HD resolution from remote locations.

EVS operators will now have direct access to Viz|Trio’s unique Look-Ahead Transition Logic feature, which not only optimises the transition between graphic elements but also keeps them on separate logical layers, allowing each to be independently controlled and rapidly taken to air in any combination.

The EVS XStore[2] server is a dedicated media server platform ideal for storing, sharing, exchanging, and editing audio and video content in SD and HD, using file-based architectures. Support for the extremely powerful Viz|Engine simplifies the rendering of graphics animations for live TV programs, and can be equally applied to post-production, webcasting, and non-broadcast large scale display applications.

The EVS collaboration with Vizrt can be seen on the Vizrt stand (2.219) at IBC 2007. The system is available as well on EVS stand (8.290).

yes, one of the largest Israeli satellite TV broadcasters, has chosen its flagship Neptune automation system as part of a move to a state-of-the-art tapeless workflow.

The systems integrator on the project is AVCOM the leading video system integrator in Israel.

yes transmits 160 video channels, of which 50 originate from the broadcaster’s headquarters and the remainder operate on a pass-through basis. A large percentage of its subscribers are Russian, so all movies are dubbed into Russian and are subtitled.

yes is currently replacing its existing Sony BZA tape-based automation system and the deployment of Neptune represents the first phase of a wider plan to migrate to an end-to-end tapeless workflow. This part of the project will deliver 12 SD channels plus four HD channels divided across two separate Neptune systems, each located at different sites. The main facility will support ten channels, with a further six channels operated from a secondary, remote, site. Both systems will pull content from a Front Porch Diva system, which in effect will act as a single archive system with instances mirrored across both sites.

A major part of the project being carried out by yes is the development of an enhanced interface to its Pilat IBMS traffic system, which aims to provide synchronisation between the data held in the automation database and the data held in the Pilat traffic database. Instead of pushing dub-list files to the automation system, the traffic controller will present a view of all media that is to be ingested. This data can then be queried by Neptune and subsequently dragged directly into a cache list or ingest panel. The metadata entered during the ingest process will be automatically updated in the Pilat system.

The primary automation system has a main and backup device controller with manual changeover switches and the remote site has a single standalone device controller. There are a total of four clients on the main site and one on the remote site, which will use Neptune’s Periscope timeline viewer to monitor all channels from a single screen.

Neptune will control ViZrt graphics devices, Omneon video servers and Cavena subtitlers. Neptune also had to meet a number of requirements concerning support for multiple languages – in particular yes’ special Russian language requirements, which will involve processing files at the ingest stage so that all files are suitable for transmission irrespective of the Russian dubbing state.

"We selected Pebble Beach for its open, modern architecture that allows an integration with the Traffic system. Pebble Beach was able to offer a comprehensive metadata interchange, which goes far beyond the typical automation traffic interface," said Danny Sharon, AVCOM Director of business development.

Neptune’s high degree of scalability will allow yes to easily expand the set-up as the and when the remaining channels are migrated from the Sony automation system during the second phase of the project. This initial phase is scheduled to go on air in November 2007.

“This project with yes shows that Neptune continues to develop in line with the needs of customers with large multi-channel operations. As broadcasters look to serve the an ever wider audience, multiple language support and the ability to grow their operations in an organic fashion become key factors,” said Rafael Dubois, Pebble Beach sales manager for the region. “We’re delighted that yes has chosen Neptune and look forward to a long and happy relationship with them.”

      Avitech follows Tour de France

      by Heather McLean
Avitech International will be talking of its recent support of the Tour de France to visitors to this year's IBC.
Through SAV, a French-based broadcast equipment reseller, manufacturer, and systems integrator, Avitech supplied ALIMAGE with a series of MCC-8004 universal multiviewers for an ALIMAGE OB van supporting the Tour De France cycling event. The multiviewers helped drive NEC displays (1600 x 1200 at 50Hz) in the OB van designated to monitor activities during the race, picking up signals received from helicopters and motorbikes during its 3,550 kilometres-wend through France.
The van production crew were able to use Avitech's enhanced button-driven GPI feature, which enables switching between eight different monitoring configurations, plus layout changes, while monitoring live feeds. The crew were also able to keep an eye on event statistics, graphics tracking individuals in the race, graphics showing race results, and more. (These graphics on-air serve a key and fill function that feed the rest of the OB van fleet.)
Designed to work efficiently in sports production environments, Avitech's products offer features including combining HD-SDI, SD-SDI and analog video sources as well as on-screen alarm indicators for video and audio status, plus low power consumption and embedded audio monitoring
For Le Tour, the MCC-8004 series of multiviewers were integrated closely with interface equipment from Snell & Wilcox, Grass Valley, and graphics equipment and cards from Vizrt and Matrox.

Vizrt and Barco give high res display

      by Farah Jifri
The results of Vizrt and Barco efforts to integrate Barco's displays and processors with Vizrt's Viz|Engine 3D graphic renderer, are being demonstrated at this year's IBC.
The combined Vizrt/Barco systems integrate the high resolution graphic output provided by Vizrt with Barco displays to create a more flexible set design. High-res backdrop outputs are created that enable the studio presenter to work interactively with the displayed graphics materials on set. Interactive graphics and background scenes can be easily inserted while maintaining the natural delivery of the presenters.
The demonstrations on both stands show a complete production workflow and integration with Vizrt's Viz|Trio character generator which controls the realtime interactive show. The Viz|Multi-Platform Suite (MPS) is being used to illustrate realtime graphics and video content delivery to mobile devices.
Also forming part of the demonstrations is the Viz|Curious Maps mapping software and Viz|Quattro still and clip store product.
"The combination of such top of the line technologies woven together so seamlessly really opens up the possibility for graphic designers, where anything is now possible in terms of the quality of the graphics and interaction with the presenter. We foresee a new, heightened approach to broadcast graphic interactivity occurring as a result of this collaboration. It truly opens the door to a new level of creativity," said Petter Ole Jakobsen, CTO, Vizrt.

Inside Look: F&F Production GTX15 HD truck
      Sep 27, 2007 - 11:32:10 AM

      By Ken Kerschbaumer

F&F Productions newest truck, GTX15, is beginning its second month of duty after its debut during the U.S. Open tennis championships for CBS Sports. It’s current gig? Handing CBS Sports NFL and college football telecasts.

Connie Vizaro, F&F VP, production and sales, says the new truck is a double expando all the way down the side, giving it plenty of room for a Grass Valley Kalypso production switcher and a monitor wall with 103 LCD monitors.

“It’s one of the larger double-expando units,” says Vizaro. “And the consoles are movable to there can be either a center walkway or walkways on the left or right in the control room.” That flexibility makes it suitable for either entertainment or sports productions. It also has three tiers of positions.

The monitor wall includes 12-inch monitors for the camera monitors while the rest are 10.4-inch units. There are also two 22-inch and a 32-inch monitor.

The tape area has six channels of EVS, two four-channel EVS units, two Sony
SRW5500 decks and Digi Beta (it can be expanded up to 20 decks). “We can make it into whatever people want and it’s also wired for 24 cameras,” says Vizaro. Ikegami CMOS HD cameras are on board.

Other gear includes Vizrt graphics in the B-unit with Chyron Duet Hyper X and Deko in the A-unit. A Calrec Alpha audio console with Madi is available and an NVision 288x435 router, expandable up to 576x576, is also on board.

“This makes us the only company with a complete HD fleet,” says Vizaro. “And we have four A units that can all run without a B unit.” The B units really don’t kick in until basketball season starts. Vizaro says NFL, the World Series and MLB playoffs, a couple of entertainment shows and even a couple of presidential debates are all on the docket.

      Revolution in real time
Sep 1, 2007 BY PETTER OLE JAKOBSEN

Live broadcast graphics accelerate and proliferate.

Technological advancements in graphics creation software and processing hardware have impacted the volume and quality of graphics that broadcasters can generate for live programs as well as the very way they work.

In the last 15 years, the broadcast industry has experienced a revolution that has transformed the viewing experience by enabling a virtually unlimited creative palette and dynamic eye candy effects.

To fully appreciate how dynamic the live broadcast graphics business has become, look at the equipment 15 years ago. The first live graphics systems were limited to relatively simple moves like spins, warps, flips and page turns. In addition, early versions of character generators did just that — generate characters onscreen.

An entire control room full of equipment, including the production switcher, DVE, CG and still store, needed to be pressed into service to create sophisticated, multilayered looks — especially for live sports telecasts. Or graphics packages had to be outsourced to post houses and boutiques that charged stations an hourly fee to build all the graphics roll-ins and channel branding pieces broadcasters needed.

      Real-time 3-D animation

In Norway, TVN’s new virtual sets
feature behind-theshoulder graphics with text images and tickers.

While the term live broadcast graphics refers to push-button triggering of real-time graphics during live applications, such as newscasts, sports, elections, concerts and award shows, a good deal of the work takes place in advance. Graphics must be designed and in some cases rendered; 3-D animated elements need to be imported from 3-D animation systems; and other post-production finishing may be needed to give the graphics an enhanced, polished look.

In just a decade, the CG has grown to become a live graphics system, and many of the high-end models now incorporate 2-D, 3-D, HD, SD, animation, production and delivery tools in one system.

The 2-D systems dominant in the 1990s — many of which were designed to give the illusion of a 3-D look — have yielded to real-time, 3D-animated graphics systems. Real-time 3-D animation is fast-becoming the standard for live graphics for broadcast news and sports.

      Increased reliability
In the 1990s, broadcast customers still relied on dedicated, proprietary graphics systems because they thought they were the only way to get sufficient processing power to render live broadcast graphics. When Windows-based systems first appeared, there was justified distrust in their reliability, as people feared they would crash in the middle of a live show.

Today, most live broadcast graphics systems are PC-based, and the high-end models have proven their ability to deliver enough processing power to handle real-time output of multiple channels of 3-D animated graphics, text, video and audio, in HD, SD, or a mix of the two.

      Automated for efficiency
Features are being built into high-end live graphics systems that are intelligent enough to adjust the position of one graphic on the screen to make room for a new graphic. This capability is intuitive enough to adjust the composition on the fly without an operator's manual intervention.

As a result of these advances, broadcasters need fewer operators and gear during a live show, which means that they can lower production costs without compromising production standards. Also, broadcasters view the ability to distribute their branded content to multiple outlets as critical for broadening their audience and generating new revenue streams.

      Distribution to multiple outlets
Today's live graphics systems can handle a wide range of resolutions and formats, including wide-screen HD, 4:3 SD, Web formats and even the scaled down display requirements of a cell phone.

We're moving into a world where the multilayering of graphics, and the positioning of foreground and background elements, will be a function of the target display device. While today graphics are composited in the production control room and sent out as part of the broadcast signal, in the future, graphics elements may be sent separately to different devices — such as the set-top box (STB), PC or cell phone — where they would then be rendered on the fly into a single, multilayered composite as the image displays.

Also, some of the graphical elements can even be customized or personalized at the point of delivery for the particular display medium or viewer's interests, location or demographics. Broadcasters may find that this is a simple way to generate new revenue streams without changing their business models.

Distributed creativityThe broadcast workflow has also been irrevocably changed. Compared with the days when a graphics artist could sit at an expensive workstation and design the graphics, journalists and producers can now actively participate in the graphics creation process.

As graphics creation software has become detached from the processing hardware, such as the rendering engine, the creative process can move to less expensive laptops, desktop PCs and newsroom computer systems networked across the station's operation.

People can now do what they do best. Graphics artists can concentrate on creating an innovative graphics look that can serve many graphics needs at that station or network and ensure that channel branding remains consistent.

      Template-based graphics
Today, there is a growing trend for artists to create a single graphic template that journalists can load with specific information, without affecting the graphic's look. A sports template might be designed with fields for the player's name, position and player stats, as well as the team's name and logo.

With template-based graphics, the journalists and producers who are most familiar with the details of the news or sports story can enter the names, places, and video and audio elements for that graphic. Then they can prepare them in time for the next newscast or sports show. All of the creative attributes that the artists built into the templates — such as shadows, 3-D moves, banners, colors and font styles — do not change when the user fills in the content.

Instead of having to create a dozen or more graphics for every member of the team, only one graphics template is needed because the content can be repeatedly changed without building the graphic from scratch. They can stamp out versions of a graphic while maintaining a consistent on-air presentation.

This technology is a significant time-saver for broadcasters and one that enriches their live shows with more unique graphics than would be practical for an artist to create from scratch.

      Data-driven graphics templates
The latest trend in live broadcast graphics takes the idea of the graphics template one step further. Many high-end graphics systems now support RSS feeds and other third-party data feeds that deliver timely, real-time data — such as sports scores, team statistics, stock prices and polling results — and feed them directly into the graphics templates. Values, such as percentages, can be used by live graphics systems to generate visuals, such as bar graphs and pie charts, that help viewers better understand the information.

This capability has proven to be particularly useful during fast-paced, data-driven events, such as election coverage or major sports telecasts. This process is automated, so graphics can be created live, on the fly, without data entry errors. Broadcasters can generate an impressive quantity of live graphics — far more than could be created manually — because a single graphics template can be used repeatedly and automatically refilled as new or updated data streams come in.

Real-time, data-driven 3-D graphics displays were once considered a luxury that only national networks could afford. Today, smaller broadcast operations, such as local market stations, are adopting the technology because the costs have come within reach.

      Image tracking for graphics
Graphics templates can also be filled or influenced by other live data sources, such as camera tracking or GPS coordinates. This type of technology is already used for auto racing, marathons, horse racing or other instances where cameras and GPS tracking devices are placed on moving objects.

Data is relayed back to the graphics systems to enable them to position the live graphics relative to the moving objects so that the graphics follow the objects wherever they move on the screen. For example, a flag displaying a car's speed, driver and position can be made to stay right above that respective car as it whizzes around the track.

With image tracking technology, sports graphics have become an integral part of the sportscast itself because graphical objects can be keyed or superimposed onto specific spots on the playing field. During broadcast of American football games, a yellow line — known as the first-and-ten line — is routinely employed across the field, serving as a first-down marker. During association football game broadcasts, bright lines are keyed on the playing field to show offside lines, or the distance from the kicker to the goal.

In addition, sports, such as baseball, include ads that are keyed directly onto stadium billboards or displays behind the batter. Swimming event broadcasts include ads that appear to be at the bottom of the pool. By overlaying graphics onto the playing field, broadcasters can realize a new advertising revenue stream, as well as give their sophisticated viewers a better understanding and analysis of the game.

      3-D virtual sets
Another significant trend in live broadcast graphics has been moving graphics from the control room to the set. While over-the-shoulder graphics have commonly been keyed behind news anchors, over the past decade, 3-D graphics have come to fill the entire background of the set — an effect made possible by virtual set systems.

With the use of camera tracking technology, the perspective of the graphics can be tied to the movement of the cameras. As the camera pans, tilts, zooms and trucks, the graphics background moves accordingly for a more realistic viewing experience.

The advantage of virtual sets is that a small studio can produce a variety of set-based shows, including talk shows, magazine news shows and sports wrap-ups. Changing the set or the look of a show is as easy as keying a different 3-D virtual environment into the blue or green screen. For this reason, virtual set technology can be a more affordable alternative to building and storing large, elaborate, physical sets.

The disadvantage of virtual sets is that the talent is surrounded by a solid blue or green screen or cyclorama, making it difficult for them to react to the graphics display unless they are looking at a reference monitor that shows the video-graphics composite. Another criticism of virtual sets is that they can look like cartoons or video games, which might not be appropriate for a serious news show.

However, the virtual set has been widely embraced in places that don't have a tradition of using physical sets or crews dedicated to building physical sets. In many ways, broadcasters in emerging countries have leapfrogged over legacy technology, with no resistance to change impeding their progress.

      Interacting with the video wall
Compared with the virtual set, the video wall is a much simpler technology that doesn't involve complex camera tracking and calibration, or real-time rendering of large graphics image files. A video wall can be HD or SD, and a single, large-screen plasma monitor can be used to display many individual video sources.

TV 2’s news studio is a combination of a real set and a video wall. Running graphics and video links on the video wall are important tools for visualizing the news and making them more accessible

The video wall is a more accessible effect, so it is gaining popularity as an effective way to splash live graphics prominently onto the live set, especially when space is not an issue.

CNN's “Situation Room,” and ABC's “Oprah” and “The View” are among the high-profile television shows using video walls. CNN has a single monitor with eight to 10 displays of moving video.

With video walls as part of the set design, the talent can see the graphics and video running on the display, react to people being interviewed from remote locations and interact with the video like a teacher pointing to a blackboard.

      Moving toward integrated production
As the set becomes a more dynamic environment of moving images, we're likely to see a trend where anchors and talent finally get up from their chairs, stand in front of the images and interact with the video.

In the future, more production capabilities will be integrated within a single system so that one operator can take charge of all aspects of a live broadcast, including real-time graphics. The industry will also experience a proliferation of graphics in a wide range of resolutions and formats, pushing the envelope for creative expression on the biggest to the smallest screen. Not only are 3-D graphics being used to enhance the live broadcast, they are also becoming an integral part of the studio set.

Judging by the way that the live graphics business has evolved, live graphics systems will have more firepower in the future. These tools will enable a greater volume of eye-catching, 3-D animated graphics to be produced for distribution to a wide array of media devices.

      China Broadcasting

Broadcasters around the world are gearing up to make the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing the most watched to date. Global television viewing of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens broke all previous records. Viewership increased 49 percent when compared against the 2000 Games in Sydney. According to the Global Television Report from the International Olympic Committee, a total of 44 thousand hours of dedicated television coverage made the 28th Olympiad in Athens the most watched event during that two week period.

The Olympic Games in Beijing present a tremendous opportunity for broadcasters around the world as well. Television stations have already invested or are planning to invest a great deal making careful preparations to cover the games in China. They must push themselves to explore the latest in technology and create new ways to provide viewers with compelling pictures, crystal clear sound and bring the excitement of the Olympics onto millions of screens and into millions of homes. Broadcasters will look to industry leaders to guide them and provide solutions so that they can deliver branded programming and an unmistakably recognizable top-notch product. During the recent BIRTV convention, Vizrt demonstrated that the company can offer broadcasters its expertise and support as well as a range of high-quality graphics products.

Vizrt displayed its full array of graphics and media asset management solutions at BIRTV in August. Having introduced the concept of real-time graphics to the China market, Vizrt has been building a strong presence in the country. China Central Television (CCTV) began using an arrangement of Vizrt products (Viz|Trio CG, Viz|Artist animation, and Viz|Content Pilot content management software) to broadcast high-profile events such as a Chinese New Year celebration. Since then, local television stations have followed suit and are beginning to turn to Vizrt for end-to-end content creation and delivery.

The driving force behind Vizrt’s solutions is the quality of its real-time 3D render engine known as Viz|Engine. Just as the heart of an athlete can be considered an engine that fuels his ability to run farther, jump higher and outperform his competition, Vizrt’s powerful Viz|Engine is the heart that powers high-quality graphics and animations.

Vizrt’s powerful Viz|Engine renderer provides real-time, hardware-accelerated graphics on the client platform, enabling the customization, localization, and personalization of targeted advertising placements. It plays a vital role in allowing Vizrt’s compatible graphic products to assist broadcasters in creating a visual identity with their audience.

Among the new features demonstrated at BIRTV were plug-ins for Viz|Artist,, specifically “RTT Advanced Materials” This exclusive package of RTT shaders allows Vizrt users to visualize 3D objects and surfaces in cutting-edge photorealistic quality. With the new shaders, graphic artists now have a wide selection of new background materials, computer-generated objects, and animation to create photo-realistic graphics.

The plug-in package provides Vizrt users with an extensive selection of materials including carbon, lacquered wood, metal, glass, bump maps and many more effects. The RTT shaders react to light sources, basis textures, settings and materials specific to Viz|Artist 3.0, such as color, shininess and opacity. In addition, the user can draw on a wide selection of presets, such as ready-made wood alternatives.

To better manage the RTT Advanced Material shaders, there is a new object type in Viz|Artist that enables the user to store complex material consisting of the basic color settings, textures and shaders into the Viz|Artist database.

Additionally, the entire Vizrt product line is fully Viz|Artist 3.0 compliant. Viz|Artist is now supported from Viz|Trio CG, Viz|Content Pilot content management, Viz|Ticker, and Viz|NLE plug-ins. All products can utilize the enhanced feature set of Viz|Artist 3.0.

Also new to Viz|Artist 3.0, Visual Data Tools (VDT) plug-ins for Viz|Artist 3.0 can be used to display any type of statistic or financial data. VDT plug-ins enable the creation of charts and diagrams. It also includes plug-ins for modifying, importing, exporting and storing data from databases such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, etc.

Viz|Artist 3.0 now supports multi-touch devices, such as when multiple users simultaneously interact with graphics on a touch screen for sports results or stock prices, for example.

Another new plug-in called “Action Model,” created in collaboration between Vizrt and Media Seasons is designed to animate complex 3D models and characters, such as animated football players, horses in motion, etc.

Also demonstrated at BIRTV was Vizrt’s Viz|Video Hub, a robust and intuitive, plug-and-play media asset management solution. Based upon the proven and widely used technology of Ardendo’s Ardome media asset management software, Viz|Video Hub allows customers to easily access video clips, stills, graphics and audio clips from a standard PC.

Viz|Video Hub is an easy-to-use system. It is ideal for the demanding pace of a newsroom, live sports coverage such as the Olympic Games or the flexible workflow of a production company. It provides users with direct access to the most powerful search options, most recent material, best search options, and pre-editing functions – resulting in a significantly faster workflow

Viz|Video Hub will integrate with existing Vizrt software such as Viz|Content Pilot content management and Viz|Trio CG. This integration makes it possible to easily search for video clips from graphical templates just as users would search for images or data elements from a newsroom system or directly from Viz|Trio and Viz|Content Pilot. Sports highlights can be compiled quickly as well.

Viz|Video Hub scales to offer a media asset management solution to a large broadcast facility or smaller multi-media outfits. The need for an easily deployed and scaleable system factored into the product’s evolution. The intensive integration process is replaced by easy configuration screens, allowing customers to start using it right away.

Viz|Video Hub uses industry-standard metadata fields based upon the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI). Fields for title and a brief synopsis of the clip stored are pre-defined. This makes retrieval is fast and easy. Users simply search through the with free text, Boolean commands and keywords. The back and forth between library archivists and production is eliminated because the user can access the system themselves, search for what they need, and get right back to work.

The base version of Viz|Video Hub comes bundled with two basic editing functions Ardendo PreCut and Ardendo EasyCut. Ardendo PreCut enables up to twenty users to simultaneously rough cut video and create new clips. The Ardendo EasyCut feature is a slightly more advanced timeline-based video editing tool. With either option, the newly created material can be browsed continuously and is available immediately.

The benefits of Viz|Video Hub reach a number of departments by streamlining the overall production workflow. Direct access to the most recent material saves time for news or sports journalists. Content can be added and updated automatically in real-time, eliminating the need to convert and re-save material. Control rooms also have instant access to ingested material, speeding their ability to bring the latest video to an on-going production at a moment’s notice. Since the system of ingesting, searching and editing runs on standard PC’s, administrators are free from installing specialized hardware and can expand it as needed.

With the 2008 Olympics less than one year away; the atmosphere is electrified with excitement and possibility. Throughout the BIRTV convention, major broadcasters expressed a great deal of interest in knowing about Vizrt’s complete line of graphics and Media Asset Management solutions. Vizrt has demonstrated its ability to offer the ultimate in quality and provide the highest level of support during this extremely busy time.

      News graphics evolve
      Oct 1, 2007

Developments in television news graphics are keeping pace with the other sweeping changes affecting news workflow, formats and delivery options.
Driven by the desire to maximize efficiency, control costs and guarantee a consistent level of quality, some station groups continue to implement a centralized graphics workflow. For instance, Media General Broadcast Group announced in August that it was adopting a centralized graphics workflow headquartered in Richmond, VA, for its news, marketing, sales and special projects departments at its 23 network affiliate TV stations. Relying on a template-based graphics workflow, Media General expects to complete the transition by the end of the year.
The march towards HD newscast also is affecting stations as they grapple with creating graphics for a dual standard- and high-definition audience. Some, such as CNBC HD and the soon-to-launch Fox Business Channel, are even looking at ways to move beyond the center-cut-with-wings-attached format to take advantage of new ways to configure their screen real estate.
New approaches to TV graphics for the small screen — cell phones and mobile devices — as well as the station's Internet sites, are also emerging. Add to these the way stations will handle election graphics in 2008, and it's clear the TV news graphics will remain a dynamic sector for the foreseeable future.
      ..........

      Acquire and interact
Data acquisition technology that allows newsroom graphics systems to collect vote totals from election reporting services and automatically generate graphics based on the numbers is a mainstay of election night graphics. However, even this mature technology is being tweaked and improved.
“We are always finding ways to get data into our system faster,” says Isaac Hersly, president of Vizrt Americas. “We also are seeing that more of this data can be previewed first and then viewed on desktops within the newsroom systems.”
These new preview capabilities give producers responsible for races the ability to look at the results close to real time.
“They can set that up and enter it into the playlist,” Hersley says, “so the production tools have a higher value now, and the content can really be previewed before it goes to air.”
More appealing election graphics are also headed for local stations, according to Hersly.
“The networks have always had the infrastructure to create a sophisticated line of graphics,” he says. “Now, the smaller local stations — with local news revenue being so important — are upgrading to be able to present sophisticated graphics.”
Local stations are looking to add interactivity with their election graphics that will allow anchors and reporters to call up race results, do comparisons and visually demonstrate election scenarios with the simple touch of a flat-panel display or video wall, Hersly says.
“They can use a standard touch screen, which can be mounted over a standard flat-screen monitor,” he says. “We can assist them, train them or show them how they can set up interactivity on that screen. It's real easy if you think about it. Instead of using a mouse click at your desktop, you are using your finger by pointing and clicking and causing a reaction or an interaction on the screen.”
Interactivity is consistent with a broader trend Vizrt has identified, he explains.
“Most of our clients feel that the anchor or the anchors should now be embedded within the graphic to tell the story, so there's no cut-away to a full screen of graphics,” Hersly says. “The anchor is still somewhat in your face, which is a good thing because a lot of folks like that personality delivering the information and whatever graphics accompany that story.”
      ..........

Mobile TV, the Internet & high definition
As television newsrooms have gotten serious about delivering content to cell phones, handheld devices and the Internet, graphics vendors are responding with ways to help them carry over their on-air look to these new platforms. For example, Vizrt last year unveiled its MPS multiplatform suite, which lets broadcasters take advantage of the computing resources in the hands or on the desks of consumers to achieve that consistency.
However, it's been slow going on the cell phone front for MPS because “the performance of the phone networks in this country is not where it should be,” according to Hersly. However, recent announcements of cell phones with on-board graphics mean help is on the way. Even today's cell phones can handle the difference between's the horizontal aspect ratio of TV and their own vertical orientation.
“Remember, there is code running on these mobile devices,” says Ed Casaccia, director of product management & marketing for Thomson Grass Valley Digital News Production. “They are not like a television set that's just a receiver. So, in your delivery you can become much more agnostic by sending the same thing everywhere but telling each device how to display it. If you send the same data every place but you tell the device, ‘Here's the crucial area of interest,’ we have the technology to define the area of interest and pass that along as data so that a phone with a vertically oriented aspect ratio can know what to do.”
Graphics-rich PCs are a different story entirely. Millions already have the graphics processing power on board to generate on-the-fly news graphics sent as data along with a station's video stream via the Internet.
“We have a version of our software that puts our Viz engine in a PC and lets us create graphics locally, and those graphics can be targeted to known consumer preference,” Hersly says.
On the big screen side of the equation, the growth of HD graphics systems deliveries in the United States is tracking the increasing number of local stations on-air with HD local news, which currently is estimated to be between 50 and 60 stations. According to Hersly, 85 percent of the Vizrt graphics systems being shipped today in the United States are high definition.
“We are finding that local stations — be it in the top 10 markets or even the top 50 markets — most of them when they do order today are asking for HD, and it's not that they were planning to do it down the road,” he says. “It's a relatively immediate use of HD.”
According to Hersly, stations are adapting well to HD's wider aspect ratio and the need to simulcast standard- and high-definition channels.
“We are not having too many issues vis-à-vis SD and HD graphics, once they get the hang of it,” he says.

By Glen Dickson -- Broadcasting & Cable, 8.10.2007

Fox will be offering a wider and potentially fresher take on the financial world come Oct. 15.
That's when Fox Business Network (FBN) launches to some 30 million homes served by DirecTV, Charter, Comcast, Time Warner and AT&T, giving new competition to established financial network CNBC—and when a high-definition simulcast of FBN debuts on DirecTV.
FBN's hi-def service, which will be produced and transmitted in the 720-line-progressive scan (720p) format, will differentiate itself from CNBC's hi-def service, which also launches this month on DirecTV, by offering a true widescreen 16:9 picture. CNBC HD+, on the other hand, is taking a different tack by placing its existing 4:3 picture on the left-hand side of the HD screen and filling the right side with graphics. Since both HD networks are fighting to get carriage on capacity-starved cable systems, it will be interesting to see how initial viewers on DirecTV respond.
For FBN, the decision to go HD from the start was an easy choice, as Fox had to build a brand-new technical facility to support the network to begin with. Fox's entertainment and sports entities have also proved the production model of creating a single, widescreen high-definition program and then deriving a standard-definition, 4:3 feed to serve analog viewers.
While HD equipment might represent a 25%-35% cost premium over standard-def gear, it didn't make sense to invest in new SD equipment with an all-HD world looming on the horizon, says Warren Vandeveer, senior VP of operations and engineering for Fox News.
“It's kind of irrelevant, because I don't think anybody's building an SD facility anymore,” says Vandeveer. “So whatever it costs, you have to do it. Even if you said, 'I'm going to invest in a new facility, and I'm going to make it SD, because not everything's HD yet'—well, then the life of your facility is just going to be a few years, because eventually you're going to have to do it. So you might as well figure out how to do it cost-effectively now, and at least get yourself into HD, as opposed to having to redo it all later.”

      New Infrastructure

The new high-definition production control rooms (two), master control room and technical infrastructure for FBN are located in space that used to be a garage and lower-level retail stores underneath News Corp. headquarters at 1211 Avenue of the Americas in New York.
Construction of the hi-def plant began in April. A team averaging some 50 people has been working to make the channel's Oct. 15 launch, including on-site personnel from system integrators Ascent Media and National TeleConsultants. Last week, technical personnel were still busy filling equipment racks, hooking up cables and putting the finishing touches on the set.
Key equipment includes Evertz monitoring technology, upconverters, digital-to-analog converters and other infrastructure gear; a Thomson Grass Valley Trinix router, configured to handle up to 150 incoming feeds; a Sony production switcher; a Calrec audio console; Omneon playout servers for master-control functions; Tamuz LCD monitors; Miranda master control software; VizRT graphics systems; Harris Nexio servers for graphics playout; and DNF news automation software.
The centerpiece of FBN's production strategy is a tapeless newsroom system that keeps content in the file-based domain and allows journalists to make low-res edits on the desktop that are then replicated in high resolution on the server. It consists of Omneon servers that both ingest material and play back finished packages and an IBM central storage system with some 4,000 hours of storage, which interface with Avid's iNews newsroom computer system and Apple Final Cut editing software. The tapeless system, which is controlled by Ardendo asset management software and Pebble Beach playout software, links to a scalable IBM robotic data-tape archive. A first for Fox, the tapeless system will eventually be expanded to support Fox News Channel as well.
In its spacious street-level studio, FBN is using five Ikegami studio cameras to capture the on-air talent. They are complemented by a host of visual aids including two Christie HD projectors, two 103” Panasonic plasma displays, a circular LED display that wraps around a structural column, and a bevy of flat-panel displays. The myriad displays are controlled by a small Sony production switcher and driven by a Vista Spyder video processing system that can show any possible configuration of video and graphics.

      Integrated Delivery Systems

“The VizRT technology and all the graphics systems within the technology are allowing the sets to become more information delivery systems, instead of just places to deliver the news,” says Greg Ahlquist, senior network director and project manager, Digital Newsroom Integration, for Fox News. “So the graphics that are created for onscreen can be integrated into the set displays, and it's all very seamless at this point.”
FBN won't be doing a lot of field production, but when it does, it will rely on Panasonic P2 solid-state camcorders, which Fox is gradually deploying across all of its news properties. At FBN, a handful of P2 HD camcorders will be used to shoot both HD packages and widescreen SD video that will be upconverted for broadcast. While FBN cameramen are still in rehearsals, says Vandeveer, they have warmed to P2's file-based workflow, which stores video on removable memory cards that allow content to be easily transferred to the tapeless storage system.
In addition to the tapeless storage system, Fox will also repurpose the HD router and digital infrastructure gear it has installed for FBN to support Fox News Channel's future move to HDTV, which should happen next year. In a space adjacent to the FBN facilities, Fox has already begun building new high-definition control rooms for its established corporate cousin—all part of its master plan for hi-def news.
“We've picked the design, and unless we find during rehearsals we totally missed on something, the control rooms are going to be identical, and the technology is going to be identical,” says Vandeveer. “The idea is we want people walking into a control room to be as comfortable and as flexible as possible. So we can put any production, be it an election or a pre-tape for a show, into a control room, and they're all going to have the same capabilities.”

Viz|Artist 3.1 animation software digitizes newspaper review segment for Sky Italia

Vizrt's graphics software now powers a paperless newspaper review segment during Sky Italia's 24-hour news channel, Sky TG24. The anchor of 'I Giornale di Oggi' browses the morning's press articles with a touchscreen application, which, according to users and viewers alike, is a marked improvement on watching the anchor read through a stack of newspapers.

The Special Projects team at TG24 came up with the idea of digitizing the newspaper review while retaining the 'hands on' approach of the existing segment. The anchor selects thumbnails of newspaper pages, dragging them to an 'active' work area on a high-definition touch screen. Headlines, photographs, and finely-printed words and phrases are then centered, scaled and highlighted. Several external cameras capture the screen's HD quality, while the content of the active area is fed concurrently in standard definition directly to the switcher.

Pat McGuinness , Manager of Special Projects at Sky Italia's news and weather channels, said, “We chose Vizrt’s Viz|Artist 3.1 animation platform for our project because of its power and flexibility. Viz|Artist impresses me as an application-builder for which your imagination is the only real limit. In addition, the project was cost-effective. We use Vizrt for our 24-hour weather channel and leveraged the existing hardware for the newspaper segment. Vizrt's flexible, multi-use architecture was a key reason for selecting Viz|Weather and Viz|Trio systems when we launched Sky Meteo24 a couple of years ago."

The graphics team from Sky, together with system specialists from Vizrt, created an application based solely on Viz|Artist 3.1. The logic of the application, including all of the tools such as 'zoom', 'pan', 'pen' and 'highlighter', is programmed with the internal scripting language of Viz|Artist. The only exception is the 'Space Manager,' which automatically optimizes the size and position of pages in the application's 'active' work area. This complex logic was written as a plug-in in c++.

McGuinness said the paper-free newspaper review is just the first application for Sky Italia's new 'touch' system: "Our next task is to integrate video clips and then content such as finance, sport, weather and traffic."

      WESH Going HD...

10/18/07 - (from OrlandoSentinel.com) - High-definition television is gaining a higher profile locally. WESH will offer local news in the format, starting Nov. 1, when the next major ratings period begins. "To me, it's a substantial competitive advantage over those who are not HD," WESH General Manager Bill Bauman said. In June 2006, ABC affiliate WFTV first took the high-def plunge in local news. NBC affiliate WESH is going second, but it is trumpeting the shift in a major promotional campaign that started Wednesday. One spot says WESH "leads the way with more high-definition network programming than any local television station." By its count, WESH says it will provide 96 hours a week in the format to WFTV's 69. WFTV puts its count at 75. But the two stations are about even in local news: WESH's 35 hours to WFTV's 34. "Truly, all the local stations can control is their local news in high def," said WFTV General Manager Shawn Bartelt. "I think the more television that goes HD, the better, because it's the viewer who's going to win. It makes watching television more exciting. It's not a competition between WESH and us. The more people watch TV, the better for the TV business." The Consumer Electronics Association said that 30 percent of U.S. households have high-definition sets, but only 44 percent of them receive HD programming. CBS affiliate WKMG-Channel 6 has not solidified its high-definition plans, General Manager Henry Maldonado said. He said research suggests that not enough people own the sets to make a difference. "Have we gotten to the point where it would be reflected in ratings? Consultants say no," Maldonado said. "It is going to happen, but not yet." Fox-owned WOFL-Channel 35 said it plans to upgrade its news to high definition soon. Bauman described the investment in going high definition as "mega-substantial," but offered no specifics. Costs can vary widely, and reports have put a station's cost at $3 million to $8 million. The WESH move to high definition will incorporate graphics under a system called Vizrt that is also used by ESPN and the CBS Evening News. WESH also has created splashy new opens for its newscasts. "We will give you a completely different look that is far more advanced than what's in the market now," Bauman said. "In the first few months, we're going to keep it simple." High definition necessitates a new approach to makeup, and the station brought in an expert to teach on-air talent. "Less is more. The people look better with less makeup," Bauman said. The station will answer high-definition questions via its Web site, explain the process in newscast reports and herald the shift in numerous on-air spots during the next two weeks. "I think the market will know on Nov. 1 we've launched in HD," Bauman said.

WINK-TV kicks off local HD newscasts
      Oct 24, 2007 8:59 AM

WINK-TV switches its new HD newscasts with a Kahuna HD/SD production switcher from Snell & Wilcox.
WINK-TV, the Fort Myers Broadcasting-owned CBS affiliate in Fort Myers, FL, became one of the first TV stations in southwest Florida to broadcast its local news in HD with its 7 p.m. newscast Oct. 20.

The lead in to WINK-TV’s first local HD newscast was network HD coverage of the Florida-Kentucky game, a strategy chosen to capitalize on the high ratings the station anticipated for the game, so it would “come in with a bang,” said Keith Stuhlmann, station director of engineering.

The station got serious about local HD news in the spring. Stuhlmann, WINK-TV general manager Wayne Simons and special projects manager John Emmert went to NAB2007 in April on a mission to look at the technology “that would go into doing a top-notch HD newscast,” he said.

After getting approval from the owners of the privately held company, the station secured Ikegami HDK-790EX III HD studio cameras, a Snell & Wilcox Kahuna multidefinition production switcher, Kaleido-X image processor for control room monitoring, Vizrt graphics, Avid Thunder HD playout server and WSI HD weather package. Concurrent with the HD conversion was a transition from linear tape-based news production to a file-based workflow centering on Thomson Grass Valley Edius nonlinear editing and BitCentral Précis news production systems. A few years prior to the conversion, the station hired Broadcast Design International (BDI) to design a news set that would be 16:9-ready for the eventual conversion of its news to HD.

The station is replacing its DVCPRO cameras with Panasonic P2 tapeless camcorders. According to Stuhlmann, that conversion will take about month to complete. At that point, electronic newsgathering (ENG) shots will be done in 16:9 SD and upcoverted in the Kahuna switcher for the station’s HD audience. Additionally, once WINK-TV completes its 2GHz Broadcast Auxiliary Service (BAS) relocation and receives its new digital microwave equipment, it will consider evolving its field acquisition to HD.

Fort Myers Broadcasting also operates WXCW, the Sun Broadcasting-owned CW affiliate in town. On the same day the station launched WINK news in HD, it also kicked off WINK in HD on the CW at 10 p.m.

WINK NEWS – Southwest Florida’s FIRST and ONLY News in High Definition!

Story Updated: Oct 26, 2007 at 5:26 PM EDT

Fort Myers, Fla. - On October 20, WINK, the first television station in Southwest Florida, became the first and only station to broadcast local news in state-of-the-art High Definition.

“Being the first station to broadcast local news in High Definition represents our commitment to Southwest Florida news viewers. HD is the future, and the future is now. The quality of our news and the quality of the HD broadcast combine for what we think viewers will see as clearly better. Even viewers watching on standard definition television sets will see the difference,” says Wayne Simons, WINK Vice President and General Manager. “It’s a whole new way to experience what’s happening in our communities.”

Keith Stuhlmann, Director of Engineering at WINK, oversaw this massive technical upgrade. “It’s great technology, great clarity and resolution. The news and information presentation is sharper. Weather graphics and radar images are crystal clear. Both HD viewers and non-HD viewers will see the difference.”
“Being the first station to broadcast true HD newscasts reflects our commitment to bring you the highest quality product. Quality news presented with the highest quality picture…that’s something viewers will clearly see, “says WINK News Director Bruce Kirk.

DataDirect Networks Teams with Vizrt to Demonstrate Media Asset Management and Near-line Storage Solution
DataDirect Networks S2A Storage Systems Combine with Vizrt's Ardendo Systems to Deliver Scalable, Real-time Storage for Asset Management and Archiving

Chatsworth, CA/Bergen, Norway - October 29, 2007 - DataDirect Networks, a leading provider of scalable storage systems for performance and capacity-driven applications, has teamed with Vizrt to demonstrate their combined solution for real-time media asset management (MAM) and near-line storage for broadcast and digital archiving.

Common to both solutions is DataDirect Networks S2AÔ (Silicon Storage Architecture), which features a powerful real-time engine that delivers sustained, concurrent streams at any bit rate during media ingest, editing, playout and browsing. Additionally, immediate access to data is enabled through a centralized content pool via all host ports. This provides for seamless performance and consistent Quality of Service, avoiding video frame loss even when disk drives fail or during drive rebuilds.

The combined solution was on display for the first time at the Vizrt booth at the IBC convention held in Amsterdam, Netherlands last month.

Data protection and instant accessibility are top priorities for media content providers. DataDirect Networks addresses both with its hardware-based dual parity DirectRAIDÔ engine and SATAssureTM technology. DirectRAID enables extremely high media streaming rates that can be maintained even during check, error, or failure conditions, while SATAssure performs real-time parity checks on both reads and writes to eliminate silent data corruption in SATA drives, thus making massive cost-effective disk-based archives feasible. The S2A storage system supports nearly 1,000 disk drives, equaling close to a Petabyte of capacity using 1TB drives.

Vizrt Ardendo's ingest, media management and archive solutions include: ARDOME for media management and archiving; the DART ingest scheduler; the ARDCAP ingest station and play-out control; the ARDENC transcoder and EasyCut desktop editing solution. Ardendo's media asset management solutions leverage DataDirect Networks' S2A high availability and performance by allowing virtually unlimited edit suites to search, access and edit clips directly from the central storage. The combined Vizrt/DataDirect Networks media asset management suite manages a multitude of transfers in real-time, while maintaining firm control over security and access rights.

"As corporate commerce, service agencies, media companies and production houses evolve their business practices to leverage the explosion of digital media, media asset management has evolved from sheer storage to a core component of the media production, management and distribution chain," said Jonas Engstöm, Executive VP Product Management, Vizrt. "The evolution of media asset management has created a significant business opportunity for companies like Vizrt and DataDirect Networks. Evolving business dynamics will require companies to effectively manage and leverage rich-media assets into new revenue opportunities."

Paul Bloch, President of DataDirect Networks, continued, "The MAM and Near-line storage demonstrations prove that we've removed the complexity and workflow deficiencies associated with bulky proprietary systems. The joint demonstration offers users increased productivity and simplified maintenance for fast ROI and a significant reduction in initial lifecycle costs."

Auftrag im Wert von 1,4 Million USD von TV Bandeirantes

      Vizrt liefert Grafiksysteme nach Brasilien

Bergen, Norwegen, 13. November 2007.
