      Grandich Client Spanish Mountain Gold

      The Ounces are still there!

SPA’s most recent news release is a clarification of what they felt was a mix-up in terminology used by their consultants on their Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) announcement on November 23rd. The softening of the share price following the Nov. 23 news release might have been caused by this mix-up, which led to the conclusion that the 4.4 million ounces from their previous resource was discounted to a new resource of just under 2 million ounces. However, the ounces are still there! Here is why….

The new resource of 2 million ounces is simply the Mineral Resource contained within the PEA Pit Design that will be factored in the mine plan. This pit design was determined by preliminary economic parameters using a gold price assumption of $950 per oz. Needless to say, this gold price assumption is significantly low than the spot gold of $1,400+ per oz. As SPA has correctly pointed out, using a less conservative gold price assumption and/or improvement of capital & operating costs could enable SPA to use a significantly bigger pit in future designs, which would then be able to include more mineralization below and beside this current Pit Design. In other words, more ounces could be brought into the project’s reported “Mineral Resources”. A picture is worth a thousand words. SPA gave a clear illustration of this point with the map in the news release. Just by increasing the gold price assumption to $1,100 per alone (without tweaking the costs!), a potential pit shell outline could be seen to go deeper and include more of the gold ounces. As you can see, a Mineral Resource is by no means static…

The PEA is only a preliminary assessment of the viability of the project. Fine tuning will be done in the prefeasibility and feasibility stages. The mine plan is not static. It is dynamic and adjusted based on current economic parameters and gold price.

As I have mentioned before, the Spanish Mountain gold project is a highly leveraged to gold price. The PEA has shown that every $100 increase in gold price generates another $200m life-of-mine free cashflow. That is just assuming mining the reported “Mineral Resource” of 2 Moz. It seems that a higher gold price could bring in more ounces to SPA’s project, which would generate even higher incremental cashlfow.

In addition, SPA has also identified clear targets in the 2011 drill program that could further expand the resource with infill drilling and exploration drilling. There’s still lots of property to explore includingd the addition of the adjoining Cedar Creek property that they acquired this summer.

SPA under the stewardship of President and CEO , Brian Groves, seems to have shown a viable project with strong upside potential.
