SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Shares of companies that sell 3D printers fell on Thursday after Citron Research said they were vastly overvalued and that the technology, highlighted this week by U.S. President Barack Obama, has been hyped.
Makers of 3D printers in recent years have turned an evolving technology used by manufacturers for over two decades toward consumers, offering the prospect of producing everything from toys to tools in the home, and sending their share prices soaring.
Citron Research, run by California-based investor and notable short-seller Andrew Left, issued a report on Thursday accusing 3D Systems' Chief Executive Abe Reichental of exaggerating advances in 3D printing and contributing to a bubble in the shares of 3D printing companies.
"Appearances have become completely unhinged from reality when it comes to the mania created in so-called '3D Printing' stocks, and 3D Systems in particular," Citron Research said. "Behind every good bubble there is a good promoter, in this case we have the best in Abe Reichental."
Shares of 3D Systems Corporation, the biggest listed U.S. 3D printer maker, fell. So did shares of Stratasys and ExOne.
Citron Research focuses on stocks it believes have been fraudulently and intentionally overvalued. It said 3D Systems has made no significant advances in 3D printing technology in the past five years and that it has recently rehashed consumer products with little change.
Rock Hill, South Carolina-based 3D Systems and Stratasys declined to comment.
REVOLUTIONARY?
Also known as additive manufacturing, 3D printing creates solid objects from a digital model by laying down successive thin layers of material. Under the traditional "subtractive" approach, objects are created by cutting them out of a solid chunk of metal or plastic.
In his State of the Union address on Tuesday, Obama pointed to 3D printing as a technology for manufacturing innovation and said it "has the potential to revolutionize the way we make almost anything."
Shares of 3D printer stocks rallied the next day.
Leading-edge 3D printers are finding new roles in manufacturing, for example, to create product prototypes and other kinds of one-off production.
Companies such as General Electric Co plan to use 3D printing to build lightweight aircraft parts. Dentists use it to create crowns in the space of an hour instead of two weeks.
But today's consumer-level 3D printers can produce little more than egg holders, combs and plastic sex toys, Citron Research said.
Shares of 3D Systems have tripled over the past 12 months and recently traded at more than 42 times the company's expected 12-month earnings.
Shares of Stratasys have almost doubled over the past 12 months. Its stock was recently priced at 39 times expected earnings.
After Citron's report, 3D Systems closed down 4.36 percent at $62.75 and Stratasys ended 6.08 percent lower at $71.20. ExOne closed down 2.96 percent at $27.18.

ExOne 4Q swings to profit on higher machine sales
http://www.bizjournals.com/pittsburgh/news/2013/03/28/exone-…
ExOne Co. (Nasdaq:XONE) swung to a profit in the fourth quarter of 2012 on increasing sales of its 3-D printing machines. However, the North Huntingdon firm saw its annual losses widen in 2012 over 2011.
On a conference call with analysts Thursday morning, Chairman and CEO Kent Rockwell said the team is pleased with the year’s performance it's consistent with what the company expected during its pre-IPO roadshow earlier this year.
He also noted that, as a small company with disruptive technology, it is in an evolutionary period and will be seeing higher expenses, particularly in the selling, general and administrative line. He estimated it’ll cost the company about $2 million a year to be public.
For the quarter ended Dec. 31, the company reported profit of $902,000 on revenue of $12.7 million. That compares to a loss of $2.8 million on $2.7 million in revenue in the fourth quarter of 2011.
For the full year, the company reported a loss of $10.2 million, on revenue of $28.7 million, compared to a loss of $8 million on revenue of $15.3 million in 2011. Revenue in 2012 was up 87 percent over the prior year.
ExOne makes additive manufacturing equipment, or 3-D printing machines, aimed at industrial manufacturers. The company also provides 3-D printing services to industrial customers. In its earnings release, the company noted the boost in sales reflects the growing acceptance of 3-D printing in the industrial manufacturing space.
In the earnings release, the company said it sold eight of its 3-D printing machines in the fourth quarter of 2012 and 13 machines in the entire year. In 2011, it sold one machine in the fourth quarter and five machines total. Machine sales represented 70 percent of sales in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Why ExOne Shares Printed Profits
http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2013/03/28/why-exone-s…
What: Shares of ExOne (NASDAQ: XONE ) , a maker of 3-D printing machines and provider of 3-D printing services, jumped as much as 12% after reporting its fourth-quarter results and providing its 2013 forecast.
So what: For the quarter, ExOne sold eight 3-D printing machines, drastically pumping up revenue to $12.7 million and allowing the company to reverse a year-ago loss of $2.8 million into a $0.9 million profit. Machine sales represented 70% of total sales during the quarter and management noted that customer acceptance of its newer machine models and strength in industrial 3-D printing demand drove its results. Looking ahead, ExOne sees revenue growth in a range of $48 million-$52 million, with two-thirds of that revenue expected to occur in the second-half of 2013. Gross margin should land between 42% and 46%.
Now what: Congratulations to ExOne on its profitable quarter, but my resolve that it's grotesquely overvalued still stands. ExOne fills a niche by handling larger industrial 3-D printing that popular play 3D Systems (NYSE: DDD ) just can't satisfy with its focus on smaller, consumer-oriented products. However, even with this niche advantage, ExOne still only has produced 21 machines in 12 quarters (it takes quite a bit of time to produce those machines) and has just a few global companies comprising their largest customers. This could leave it very exposed to an economic downturn, or even stagnation. Let's be clear: I'm not a fan of any 3-D printing companies here, but if you're looking to get industrial-focused exposure, Stratasys (NASDAQ: SSYS ) appears to be the smarter play with the specialization capabilities it's acquired because of its merger with Objet. I'm just saying, don't be shocked if ExOne is right back in the loss column again next year.

Is 3D Systems your best buy in the 3-D printing sector?
3D Systems is at the leading edge of a disruptive technological revolution, with the broadest portfolio of 3-D printers in the industry. However, despite years of earnings growth, 3D Systems' share price has risen even faster, and today the company sports a dizzying valuation. To help investors decide whether the future of additive manufacturing is bright enough to justify the lofty price tag on the company's shares, The Motley Fool has compiled a premium research report on whether 3D Systems is a buy right now.

ExOne Plunges 17%: FYQ2 In-Line, Year View Light
Shares of 3-D printing technology maker The ExOne Company (XONE) are down $12.46, or 17%, at $63.21, in late trading, after the company this afternoon reported fiscal Q2 revenue that topped analysts’ estimates, and an in-line loss for the quarter, but said the year’s results may come in at the low end of its prior forecast, citing a lack of drilling equipment sales the rest of the year and timing of some shipments.
Revenue in the three months ended in June nearly doubled, year over year, to $9.23 million, yielding a net loss per share of 8 cents.
Analysts had been modeling $9.1 million and an 8-cent loss.
For the full year, the company sees revenue coming in “at the lower end of its previous guidance of $48 million to $52 million,” based on “no additional micromachine (laser drilling machine) sales in 2013 and timing of year-end shipments.”
Analysts have been modeling sales of $50.5 million for the full year.

3D Printing Stock ExOne (XONE) 2014 Outlook
https://3dprintingstocks.com/exone-xone-2014/
ExOne
Recent Developments
Shares of The ExOne Company (XONE) have been among the most volatile in the 3D printing space. This trend continued following their January 14th revenue expectations update. The company lowered expectations for 2013 from $48M to between $40M and $42M. This equates to Q4 revenue of between $11.2M and $13.2M compared with Q3 revenue of $11.6M. The share price fell sharply as a result.
ExOne points to delayed deliveries of five orders as the cause of the revenue miss. They have mentioned many times that because they operate internationally, substantial paperwork can sometimes get in the way of delivery schedules. It is not entirely clear whether this delay was caused by paperwork or by their clients desire to defer delivery and payment to 2014. They do report that no orders were cancelled and that these sales should be expected in the next quarter.
The fact that no orders were cancelled is reassuring but the delay in Q4 resulted in quarterly revenues being missed by 30 to 40%. This wreaks havoc on the PPS in the short term and leaves investors wondering what to do. Because of ExOne’s small size and its reliance on big ticket machine sales, the company is subject to relatively large fluctuations in earnings each quarter. At this point in the company’s life cycle the sale of each printer represents about 8-10% of their total quarterly revenue.
This is not the only obstacle that has impeded growth of the share price. On August 31st the IPO lockup period for shares expired; shortly thereafter on September 3rd the company issued a second offering of approximately 2.7M shares. Q3 results were announced November 14th resulting in a temporary bounce followed by a precipitous drop. The chart below highlights some of the recent negative trends in the stock.
ExOne
2014 Outlook
With such large volatility in share price and a small margin for error on orders the decision to invest in ExOne should be based on whether the market has appropriately priced the company’s future growth. To help make this determination the table below shows an industry comparison.

As calculated by Charles Schwab on 01/18/2014
ExOne compares favorably to the other pure 3D printing plays on several of these metrics particularly price to book and sales growth. Because it is a smaller company, it should be able to achieve revenue growth rates that surpass the industry wide estimates of 29%. In fact the company predicts revenue growth between 40 and 50% in 2014. They plan to accomplish this in a number of ways:
Tripling sales of their M FLEX units to 18
Increasing the global reach and number of their service centers from 7 to 15 by 2015
Looking for acquisitions that will complement their EXCAST service
Continuing the development of new materials and associated IP
The service centers are the company’s best opportunity to smooth their lumpy revenue stream. They allow clients to order products from ExOne without having to purchase a machine for themselves. This “try before you buy” approach has also proven itself successful for the company in the past at generating future machine sales. They will also continue to focus on their EXCAST service which offers a complete solution for companies with 3d printed parts needs. EXCAST involves working with a business step by step beginning with optimizing the design of products for 3D printing and extending through the finishing and delivery of printed pieces. The company believes that these all inclusive services will be the catalyst for future growth as they help clients grow accustomed to the use of 3D technology and ensure that early adopters are receiving the full benefits available to them.
The company’s two share offerings thus far, place them in a strong position to execute their growth strategy. At the end of Q3 they had an estimated $113M in cash. Because they are now operating at a profit in recent quarters, the money can be used growth and research. ExOne has already begun to expand their reach with service centers located in or targeted for Western Europe, Las Vegas, Brazil, Japan, China, Germany, Asia and Washington State among others. They have also hinted repeatedly that they are in the market for an acquisition that will enhance their EXCAST approach to offering a complete 3d printed product solution rather than just selling machines. Their goal is to have 50% of their revenues be derived from their service centers and EXCAST activities by the end of 2015.

The table indicates that with crowded short positions in XONE, many may have increased incentive to buy early on price dips thus limiting the impact of negative news. This may help create a smoother ride for investors this year and also explains some of the reason for the severe drops in PPS during 2013.
Conclusion
It appears that ExOne is past many of the growing pains in their early life cycle. The company has a war chest stuffed with cash and is recently profitable. Looming acquisitions, new material development, and a solid growth strategy focused on client needs should increase EPS in 2014. Management has taken steps to increase their sales force, expand R&D, grow internationally and adapt their products and services to a larger audience through EXCAST. Substantial short interest has created an artificial price floor which will help buoy the stock should negative news arise. These elements indicate there may be fewer bumps in the road for investors in 2014. Their current price to sales ratio is comparable to the other 3D printing companies. If they maintain their ratio of 19.98 throughout the year while hitting their 50% revenue growth target, the price per share should be approximately $85 at the end of the year. This would be an increase of 48% over the current PPS of $57.68. The likelihood of ExOne reaching their revenue target in 2014 is bolstered by the deferral of the five orders in Q4 2013 to Q1 2014.

2014 Outlook
With such large volatility in share price and a small margin for error on orders the decision to invest in ExOne should be based on whether the market has appropriately priced the company’s future growth. To help make this determination the table below shows an industry comparison.

Hallo,

ExOne (NASDAQ:XONE) announced it shipped eleven 3D printing machines in Q4 and 38 machines for the full year
Q4 sales were shy of previous guidance for 12-16 machines to be shipped, but 2015 revenue guidance holds at $40M for the year as the revenue for Q4 sales will not be recognized until 2016.

We are encouraged by this quarters shipments as well as the sales mix which included more high value indirect printing machines. This quarters shipments, combined with a strong backlog, continue to give us confidence in growing customer adoption of our binder jetting technology.”

Allen investierten viel Geduld & Erfolg.
