Lithium Power (ASX:LPI) has announced the production of lithium carbonate samples from its Maricunga lithium brine project in Chile. Highlights of the announcement include the following.

Initial lithium carbonate sample has a purity of 99.4% and very low cation concentrations.
Samples have specifications similar to those produced by Albemarle and SQM in Chile.
Maricunga is one of less than half a dozen pre-production brine projects to produce lithium carbonate samples.
WorleyParsons is well-advanced with the definitive feasibility study.
The project's environmental impact assessment is progressing towards submission in the first quarter of 2018.

Analyst comment: this is another significant milestone in the development and validation of Maricunga. It further confirms our belief in it as a standout lithium brine project globally.

As is the case with most commodities, offtake negotiations with reputable partners are not meaningful until metallurgical testwork is complete and samples production-tested. And it's potentially even more important for lithium brine projects, given that so few have produced lithium carbonate (LPI estimate – less than six).

Lithium Power's samples are likely to be sent to potential offtake partners, at which point negotiations may intensify. There is also the possibilty other potential offtake partners or corporate parties may emerge from the woodwork as well and request a sample.

Further information from the company regarding potential offtake negotiations is probable in the near future. Before then, however, Lithium Power will submit its environmental impact assessment. Given the eventual surface area that Maricunga will cover, as well as its location, the importance of this assessment cannot be underestimated. We're pleased that the company is using tier-1 environmental consultancy MWH, which has extensive experience within the project area.

The information in this email should not be the only trigger for your investment decision. We strongly recommend you seek professional financial advice whenever making financial investment decisions.

Valuation: we maintain our valuation of Lithium Power to $1.13/share (share price $0.46).

LPI hat heute (20.02.2018 )seinen Anteil am Projekt - vorzeitig - auf 50% erhöht....und immer noch genug cash auf den Bank.

Junior explorer Lithium Power International is raising its stake in a Chile lithium project to 50 per cent months earlier than expected.

The company (ASX:LPI) will make three remaining earn-in payments of $US7.53 million ($9.5 million) up to six months earlier than the deadline for a further 13.8 per cent of the “Maricunga” joint venture.

The move will allow Lithium Power to bring forward the definitive feasibility study (DFS).

“This early payment by about six months is really going to advance our definitive feasibility study, which will allow us to enter into formal negotiations and secure a partner earlier, which will ultimately get us the financing and funding to build the project earlier,” chief Martin Holland told https://stockhead.com.au/resources/lithium-power-racing-take…" target="_blank" rel="nofollow ugc noopener">Stockhead.

“We’re expecting Q3/Q4 of 2018 to have the DFS completed.”

The company will still have around $24.4 million in the bank and $US9.7 million already allocated to the joint venture following the early payments

      LPI’s carbonate celebration

LITHIUM Power International has successfully produced the first lithium carbonate from brine recovered from its 50%-owned Maricunga brine project in Chile, making it one of a handful of pre-production brine projects to do so in the world.

The JV produced the brine at German facilities owned by engineering firm GEA using a conventional technology that can be scaled up easily.

The brine was concentrated at the pilot plant solar evaporation ponds at the Maricunga site for almost 12 months, and then shipped for treatment at GEA’s lab in Duisburg.

There it was purified and precipitated into a lithium carbonate suitable for battery grade specification similar to those produced in Chile by Albemarle and SQM.

The sample was tested at 99.4% purity.

LPI CEO Martin Holland described it as a “major milestone” on the company’s path to become one of a select few lithium carbonate producers.

“Now we are able to produce a value added, refined product which we believe meets cathode manufacturers’ rigorous material specifications,” he said.

The company is advancing its environmental impact study, and expects to be able to submit it to the government within weeks.

That work is being undertaken in parallel with the definitive feasibility study that is being undertaken by WorleyParsons.

LPI describes Maricunga as one of the highest quality pre-production lithium brine project globally, with “a very high grade and strong flow rates”.

Modelling released earlier this year supported strong economic returns for production of 20,000tpa of lithium carbonate, with production of 74,000tpa of potassium chloride from year three of the project operations.

Assuming a two-year ramp-up, payback would be less than three years for LPI’s share of the development costs of US$366 million (net $183 million) with a total budget of $527 million to cover the contingency, indirect costs and the fertiliser plant.

The assessment showed that the lithium brine project would be among most efficient LCE producers in the nation with costs of $2938/t, reducing to $2635/t with the fertiliser credits.

The field would require 13 wells, a central pumping station and a salt removal plant.

The Sydney-based company had some A$34 million in the bank at the start of the year.

Und im Vergleich z.B. zu Orocobre ( aus einem australischen BB entnommen, nachzulesen im umfangreichen annual report von Orocobre) :

      Ive been digging through the 2017 annual report over at Orocobre and I took this out of this;

"Revised Scope of Phase 2 Expansion Studies

On 15 December 2016, Orocobre announced the results of scoping studies into the expansion of Olaroz and the proposed doubling of production at a cost of US$190 million including US$25 million contingency. Subsequently, these plans have been simplified to remove the purification circuit from the incremental production. The resultant product mix is 17,500 tonnes per annum purified lithium carbonate (>99.5%) from the existing purification circuit, and 17,500 tonnes per annum Primary Grade lithium carbonate (avg. 99.0%), of which ~9,000 tonne per annum will be used to feed the planned 10,000 tonnes per annum lithium hydroxide plant."

For those who don't follow Orocobre they have plans to build a lithium hydroxide plant.

"Lithium Hydroxide Plant Update on Progress

Olaroz primary grade lithium carbonate has been used as feedstock for testing of process design to produce lithium hydroxide by two specialised engineering firms. The test work demonstrated that a very high quality lithium hydroxide for the battery industry could be produced from Olaroz lithium carbonate using a customised process. The test work has also highlighted opportunities to reduce lithium losses during conversion from carbonate to hydroxide. Lithium hydroxide currently sells at a significant premium compared to lithium carbonate."

Orocobre's current plant is being expanded to process additional primary grade lithium eg: 99.0% and not 99.5% as the primary grade lithium is cheaper to process and is the primary feedstock for a lithium hydroxide plant which sells at a significant premium compared to lithium carbonate.
