DAVNET ASSERTS ITS POSITION IN GIGABIT NETWORKING WITH CREATION OF
AUSTRALIA`S LARGEST GIGABIT ETHERNET "CISCO POWERED NETWORK"
Davnet Limited has consolidated its leadership in the market for very
high-speed, Internet Protocol-based data networking solutions - or
`Gigabit Ethernet` for corporate customers, with the installation
of an additional five, top-of-the-line Gigabit Ethernet routers (GSR
12000) from global Internet equipment leader Cisco Systems. This
equipment enables Davnet to deliver up to one gigabit per second, or
1,000 megabits per second (Mbps), of data to customers.
Davnet`s latest Cisco GSR12000 purchase makes the company`s 100 per
cent IP-based network the country`s largest Gigabit Ethernet Cisco
Powered Network.
Davnet first installed its Gigabit Ethernet networks in Melbourne and
Sydney more than 12 months ago, concentrating on servicing corporate
customers in major office buildings. Earlier this month Telstra
announced its intention to follow Davnet by entering the Gigabit
Ethernet market.
"We are without a doubt the leader in this market," said Jason
Ashton, Chief Executive Officer, Davnet Telecommunications Pty Ltd.
"Telstra`s announcement that they are going to deploy this technology
is a clear endorsement of our technical direction."
"We have been delivering commercial services over `GigE` for more than
a year and our existing building licence agreements allow us to
easily provision these services", said Mr Ashton.
As part of its Ethernet strategy, Davnet also has an In-Building
Ethernet (IBE) solution which allows it to deliver up to 100 Mbps,
and even 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) of bandwidth to customers for
internal, metropolitan area and intercapital networking.
Davnet plans to launch a full earlier-grade voice service in Q4 2000-
using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology. This will
feature full interconnection with traditional carrier networks but
will be delivered through the customer`s same IBE connection. This
will be one of the first Cisco installations of its kind in the
world.
"Davnet`s latest network enhancements will substantially improve the
IP-based data, voice and video communications services available to
Australian businesses,` said Peter Papaioannou, Regional Manager of
Cisco`s Telecommunication`s and Service Provider Line of Business.
"We are pleased to be working with Davnet as it continues to lead
Australia`s service providers in the delivery of these true
broadband, multi-service communications solutions."
Davnet`s solution is fully convergent - not only providing voice,
data and videoconferencing through a single Ethernet socket at
customer`s premises but also enabling high speed Internet access.
Customers are able to obtain extra bandwidth at a few hours notice,
allowing them to cost effectively manage their network requirements.
Due to Davnet`s advanced, Cisco-based IP network, customer`s can also
prioritise one application, such as videoconferencing, over another
to ensure optimum performance.
"We believe that our low overheads and infrastructure expenses will
ensure that Davnet remains a leader in this exciting new market for
very high speed, converged voice and data solutions," said Mr Ashton.
