Genaissance stock soars more than 50 percent
NEW YORK, Jan 16 (Reuters) - Shares of Genaissance Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ:GNSC), which assists drug discovery by using human genetic compositions, soared more than 50 percent on Tuesday, but the company and analysts could not directly account for the stock movement.
"I don`t think there was a specific catalyst we can put our finger on but it was a pretty good day for a lot of biotech stocks," said Bear Stearns analyst Akhtar Samad.
The company`s shares climbed $5-15/16, or 51.35 percent, to $17-1/2. The 52-week high for the stock is $34-1/2 while the 52-week low is $9-1/2. The American Stock Exchange Biotech Index rose 7.36, or 1.27 percent, to 589.12.
A spokesman for New Haven, Conn.-based Genaissance, Paul Oestreicher, said the company had no official news on Tuesday and did not plan to release any news later in the day.
"What the stock market does sometimes defies explanation," he said.
Analysts speculated that some investors had "gone short" on the stock and then drove up the price to "cover" their positions.
People often borrow shares on the hope that the stock will later go down in value-- at which time they would return the shares and pocket the difference.
However, when investors with these short positions grow fearful that the stock might actually go up in value, they race to buy equivalent amounts of shares to cover their position, sending up the price.
"Most of the activity and price movement occurred late in the day and it seemed that what might have been occurring was a short squeeze, but there doesn`t seem to be any change in the company`s fundamentals," said Deutsche Banc Alex Brown analyst Dennis Harp about Genaissance.
Analyst James Rosen of Brean Murray & Co. said the stock is volatile, but the company is fundamentally strong. He also added that investors might be covering short business.
Rosen said shares of Genaissance, which went public in August at $13 per share, will soon experience the expiration of their lock-up period, after which insiders can sell their shares.
"When you look at a new issue that`s facing the expiration of its lock-up period, you get a lot of trading plays on the stock," Rosen said.
