So es ist fast soweit, in kürze startet der neue Musikservice und auch
wenn es zig Möglichkeiten gibt umsonst an Musik im Netz zu kommen,
so wird hier mit relativ geringem Aufwand ein neuer Weg zur Verfügung
stehen und ich persönlich glaube an gute Einnahmen darüber. Alle
Großkonzerne, die irgendwas in der Musikindustrie zu sagen haben
starten ihre Download-Services, die werden schon sehr darauf achten,
daß es auch genug Einnahmen gibt!

Music rental services ready to play

 The next generation of digital music listening services is set to take its first steps next week. Real Networks (RNWK: news, chart, profile) has been demonstrating its Real One content subscription service to reporters this week in Washington, in advance of a reported Tuesday launch. And Listen.com`s Rhapsody is expected to open for business Monday. Both will charge fees for access to digital downloads of music. Real Networks spokesman David Richards describes this as a "new concept of `rental,` " in which subscribers will have to pay regularly to have access to music they have already downloaded or new tunes they want. The Real One program will reportedly cost $9.95 a month and make available selections from three major labels -- Bertelsmann, AOL Time Warner (AOL: news, chart, profile) and EMI Group. San Francisco-based Listen.com said its service will cost $10 a month and will offer music from independent artists as well as selections from the catalog of an as-yet-unannounced label.

Compaq PCs to Include RealNetworks Services

SEATTLE (Reuters) - RealNetworks Inc. (Nasdaq:RNWK - news) said on Wednesday Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE:CPQ - news), the world`s No. 2 PC maker, will include its software on new computers, giving the Internet media company an important outlet to consumers as it builds steam behind its online subscription service.

New consumer PCs from Compaq will include Real`s RealOne software, which can be used for playing video and audio over the Internet as well as recording and storing music on a computer, Real`s Chief Operating Officer Larry Jacobson said.

The deal also calls for Compaq to include icons and promotions for the RealOne online subscription service, which lets users get exclusive sports, entertainment and other content for a monthly fee, Jacobson said.

Such deals with PC makers are key for Real to get its software in the hands of consumers as it competes against cross-town rival Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) for dominance in the digital media industry. Microsoft`s software, the Windows Media Player, is given a prominent place in its Windows XP (news - web sites) operating system, which ships on virtually all new PCs.

``We`ve widened the gap in terms of leadership in Internet media delivery because we`ve aggregated all this content. Through these types of arrangements we can take an even more aggressive lead through the (PC maker) channel,`` Jacobson said when asked about competing with Microsoft.

The RealOne player will also be the default software for playing CDs and MP3 music files on Compaq PCs. Moreover, an ``entertainment`` button on the Compaq keyboard will direct users to the RealOne site, Jacobson said.

``We have all this great content now with RealOne that we can use in a promotional way,`` Jacobson said. ``This is the deepest-reaching relationship we`ve ever had.``

Jacobson declined to say how many new subscribers Real hoped to get out of the multiyear deal, which includes revenue-sharing provisions with Compaq.

``Needless to say it`s a huge opportunity because if we get any sort of attach rate for our membership, that`s great,`` Jacobson said.

However, RealOne will not be shipped on new Compaqs until next March, when a final version of the software is released. In the meantime, Compaq will ship the latest versions of the RealPlayer and RealJukebox programs, Jacobson said.

RealNetworks unterstützt MPEG-4
Streaming-Pioneer RealNetworks hat angekündigt, ab der nächsten Version seiner Streaming-Plattform RealSystem iQ den offenen Multimedia-Standard MPEG-4 zu unterstützen. Der RealPlayer und dessen Nachfolger RealOne sollen laut RealNetworks ab sofort über ein Plug-in von Envivio ISO-konformes MPEG-4 abspielen können; native MPEG-4-Unterstützung soll in der nächsten Player-Version folgen.

RealNetworks Schritt kommt überraschend: Das Unternehmen war in der Vergangenheit nicht eben für die Unterstützung offener Architketuren und Videoformate bekannt, sondern hatte hauptsächlich auf proprietäre Entwicklungen à la RealAudio/-Video gesetzt, um seine Vorherrschaft im Streaming-Sektor zu behaupten. Durch die Integration von MPEG-4 erhofft sich RealNetworks nun aber einen Zugang zu den neuen Gefilden mobiler Telekommunikation: MPEG-4 ist speziell auf Audio-/Videostreaming bei niedrigen Bitraten zugeschnitten und wird daher von vielen Unternehmen als Standard für Videokonferenzen und mobile Kommunikation gefördert.
