RESEARCH ALERT-Salmon downgrades defense industry stocks
Tuesday October 8, 2:00 pm ET
NEW YORK, Oct 8 (Reuters) - Wall Street firm Salomon Smith Barney on Tuesday cut
its rating on the defense industry to "market weight" from "overweight," citing a drop in
public support for defense spending.
The news sent the shares of arms makers down.
"Public opinion in favor of increasing defense spending dropped much more than
expected," analyst George Shapiro said in a research report. "It is possible that the
weak economy has also hurt public support. If so, the rising deficit could start to hurt
defense."
The S&P Aerospace and Defense Index (^GSPAERO - News) was down nearly 4
percent at 181.03 in midday trading.
Expectations of rising government defense spending following the Sept. 11 attacks on
the United States have boosted shares of arms makers in the past year, even as the
broader market has fallen.
Support for increased defense spending has fallen to 50 percent, down from 80
percent immediately following the Sept. 11 attacks, according to a poll conducted by
Salomon, Shapiro said.
Shares of Lockheed Martin Corp. (NYSE:LMT - News), the No. 1 U.S. defense
contractor, were down 3.8 percent to $59.10 on the New York Stock Exchange.
Salomon cut its 12-month price target on Lockheed to $72 from $80.
Salomon cut its price target on Raytheon Co. (NYSE:RTN - News) to $36 from $48.
Shares of Raytheon, which makes missile systems, fell $1.77, or 6 percent, to $27.38
on the NYSE.
Salomon cut its rating on Alliant Techsystems (NYSE:ATK - News) to "in-line" from
"outperform" and reduced its 12-month price target to $71 from $77. Shares of Alliant,
a maker of ammunition and parts for rocket-propulsion systems, fell $5.25, or nearly 8
percent, to $62.25 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Ex-German soldiers sue U.S. companies over cancer
Tuesday October 8, 6:39 pm ET
EL PASO, Texas, Oct 8 (Reuters) - Hundreds of former German soldiers with cancer
they claim was caused by radar equipment made by U.S. companies including
Raytheon on Tuesday filed a lawsuit seeking damages in state district court in El Paso.
Enrique Moreno, one of the lawyers representing the soldiers, said
450 military personnel from the German Bundeswehr and other NATO
forces, were seeking compensation for damages, including leukemia and other
cancers, they claim was caused by poor protection against radiation.
According to court papers, the lawyers claim soldiers working on U.S.-made radar
equipment between 1958 and 1994 were suffering from cancer because of "inadequate
shields that transmitted dangerous amounts of X-ray radiation."
Moreno said the soldiers were not told to wear protective clothing or to limit the time
they worked with the equipment. Many of the soldiers trained in the west Texas area of
El Paso on Patriot missiles and related equipment.
The companies named in the suit were Raytheon Co. (NYSE:RTN - News), ITT
Industries (NYSE:ITT - News), General Electric Co. (NYSE:GE - News), Lucent
Technologies (NYSE:LU - News) and Honeywell (NYSE:HON - News).
Former German soldiers sued the German government in March seeking compensation
for damages they say they suffered from operating military radar made by U.S.
companies.
Moreno would not say how much the soldiers are seeking in the El Paso suit, but added
that the limits of the awards are between $1 million and $2 million per person.
"This thing has been kicking around for a while," said Dave Shea, Raytheon
spokesman.
He said the lawsuit involves the Patriot missile.
