Check Point Software (CHKP:NASDAQ - news - commentary) gained more than 7% Thursday on the strength of an upgrade by CIBC World Markets.

CIBC analyst Shaul Eyal said he moved the seller of Internet security software to sector outperformer from sector performer based on a belief that the stock "trades at an unjustified discount to its peers." Check Point is trading at 13 times CIBC`s 2003 EPS estimate of 99 cents a share, while comparable companies, including Symantec (SYMC:NYSE - news - commentary) , Network Associates (NET:NASDAQ - news - commentary) , and RSA Security (RSAS:NASDAQ - news - commentary) , are trading at a consensus average of 30.4 times estimated 2003 earnings.

Eyal set a target price of $17 per share. In recent trading, Check Point was selling for $13.96 a share, up 99 cents or 7.6%

According to Eyal, the Israeli company will generate net cash flow from operations of $242 million in 2002 (an earnings call is scheduled for Jan. 22) and $243.6 million in 2003. The cash cushion, Eyal wrote in a research note, could be used to initiate a share buyback plan, make a dividend distribution or initiate an acquisition, though he considers the last option unlikely in the short run. Any of those options could act as a short-term catalyst for a spike in share prices, he said.
