OmniVision Wins GROW! Award For An Outstanding Three-Year Growth Record

SUNNYVALE, CA - May 18, 2005 - OmniVision Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: OVTI), the world`s leading supplier of CMOS image sensors, announced it has received the Association of Corporate Growth`s (ACG) prestigious annual GROW! award. er enthält 2 wesentliche Punkte:

      OmniVision Adds Finnish Flash?
      By Stephen D. Simpson, CFA
      March 24, 2005

Never let it be said that management at chipmaker OmniVision Technologies (Nasdaq: OVTI) doesn`t know how to get investors` tongues wagging.

In announcing a significant design win for the company`s 1.3 megapixel CMOS image sensor, the company referred to it as from "one of the world`s largest handset makers." Given that OmniVision is already doing business with pretty much every major cell-phone maker but one, speculation immediately turned to Nokia (NYSE: NOK) as the possible customer.

Though nobody should hold their breath waiting for public clarity on this matter -- neither the customers nor the vendors in this business make a habit of showing their cards -- there is more than a little anecdotal evidence to support the "Nokia thesis."

As I mentioned in an earlier piece, OmniVision`s inventory swelled in the most recent quarter, and much of that increase was for 1.3 megapixel chips. So is it just a coincidence that management announces a major customer a few weeks later? Given that negotiations can take time and that customers often want chips in their hands as soon as a deal is complete, the pieces do seem to fit together.

The deal would also make sense from Nokia`s perspective as well. Although competition is fierce from the likes of Agilent (NYSE: A), Micron (NYSE: MU), STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), and ESS Technology (Nasdaq: ESST), OmniVision is generally regarded as having top-notch quality and performance. So, as part of Nokia`s strategy to get back into a growth groove, it would make a certain bit of sense to make sure that its newest phones have good chips in them.

Frankly, though, my perspective is that it doesn`t really matter if the mystery customer is Nokia or not. Sure, it would be great if the company added such a major client to its roster, particularly if that helps burn off that inventory quickly. But even if it`s a prior customer simply signing on for the 1.3 megapixel chip, that`s still good news.

So, is everything hunky-dory for OmniVision now?

The answer depends almost entirely on whether you ask a bull or a bear.

Bears are going to keep grousing about the inventory, the risks of competition and commoditization, and the Securities and Exchange Commission inquiry until those issues go away. What`s more, judging by the huge short position in these shares, there are a lot of people betting against OmniVision right now.

On the bull side, you have a growing company with good margins, good return on assets and equity, and a very cheap-looking valuation. In addition to all of that, this new customer order for 1.3 megapixel chips certainly doesn`t hurt.

If ever there were a company that accentuated the importance of due diligence, it`s this one. While the valuation makes it look like a real winner, nobody yet knows whether that SEC cloud over the company is going to send an ill-timed lightning bolt into the stock. Although it will be absolutely critical going forward to track operating metrics like margins, inventory turns, and cash flow, today`s valuation could make this a big winner for investors who can step up to the plate and swallow the risk today.

Market Pulse: OmniVision cut to underperform at Jefferies
Monday June 20, 1:13 pm ET
      By Michael Baron

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Shares of OmniVision Technologies Inc. slid almost 6% to $14.70 on Monday after Jefferies & Co. lowered its rating on the Sunnyvale, Calif., maker of semiconductors for digital cameras to underperform from hold and slashed its price target to $11 a share from $18. The firm said it expects OmniVision to offer a below consensus outlook when it reports financial results for its fiscal fourth quarter on Thursday because of ongoing technical issues with its OmniPixel 2 megapixel and above sensors, an inventory overhang and increased competition. Jefferies specifically noted that its channel checks indicate business with Nokia has yet to materialize, and that it believes Micron Technology won 2 megapixel design wins at the Finnish mobile phone giant.

OmniVision Takes Lead in Mobile Cameras with New 2 Megapixel Sensor; Launches World`s First Fully Integrated 1/4 Inch 2 Megapixel Sensor
OmniVision Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ OVTI), the world`s leading supplier of CMOS image sensors, today unveiled the world`s first fully integrated 1/4 inch 2 megapixel CameraChip(TM), the OV2640. This new sensor is based on OmniVision`s latest 2.2 micron OmniPixel2 architecture, allowing it to be assembled in the very popular 8 x 8 mm sockets with a building height of about 6.5 mm. This is essentially the same size as today`s standard 1.3 megapixel camera modules, giving mobile handset and device designers, for the first time, the ability to easily upgrade and implement a high volume mainstream 2 megapixel camera solution.

"Most of our competitors are now just releasing their first 1/4 inch 1.3 megapixel sensors, something that we have provided for over 2 years," said Per Rosdahl, Senior Product Marketing Manager at OmniVision. "We are particularly proud to once again take the lead in camera miniaturization for the mid to high-end segment of the camera phone market."

The OV2640 takes advantage of the many process and design improvements of the new OmniPixel2 architecture, including more vibrant color, a zero-gap micro lens structure, an increased fill factor as well as significant improvements in the quantum efficiency and "full well" capacity resulting in a very small but highly sensitive 2.2 micron pixel.

"We are experiencing very early success with the OV2640 with several design wins already secured," Rosdahl continued. "We believe the advantages of its size and features make it the clear choice for those customers wanting to take an early lead in the pixel race for mid to high-end camera phones."

In addition to the benefits of the OmniPixel2 architecture, OmniVision also integrated an advanced image signal processor called OmniQSP(TM). OmniQSP provides high-grade picture processing and features traditionally only found in digital still cameras (DSC). This advanced imaging processor has become very important as the camera phone continues to evolve from a simple gadget to a full fledged DSC.

The OV2640 is powered with an integrated compression engine, a major benefit to customers because it allows them to use the same camera interface bandwidth as the 1.3 megapixel sensor. Combined with the same form factor as a 1.3 megapixel sensor, customers adopting the OV2640 can easily upgrade their platforms to 2 megapixels without hardware or mechanical changes.

The OV2640 is currently available for general sampling.

OmniVision Reports Record Financial Results for Fiscal Second Quarter 2006
      - Revenue Reaches $126.8 Million
      - Company Posts Earnings of $0.41 per Diluted Share
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Dec. 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- OmniVision Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: OVTI), a leading supplier of CMOS image sensors, today reported financial results for the second quarter of fiscal 2006 which ended on October 31, 2005.

Revenue for the second quarter was a record $126.8 million, up from $96.0 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2006, and $84.4 million in the second quarter of fiscal 2005. Net income in the second quarter was a record $22.6 million, or $0.41 per diluted share, compared to net income of $14.4 million, or $0.25 per diluted share, in the first quarter, and net income of $17.8 million, or $0.28 per diluted share, in the prior-year period.

Revenue for the first six months of fiscal 2006 was $222.8 million, compared to $183.2 million for the same period in fiscal 2005. Net income for the first six months of fiscal 2006 was $37.0 million, or $0.65 per diluted share, compared to net income of $37.6 million, or $0.60 per diluted share, for the same period in fiscal 2005.

Strong demand from mobile handset manufacturers had a positive impact on OmniVision`s revenue during the period. Revenue from Silicon Optronics, the Company`s joint venture with Powerchip Semiconductor Corporation which was consolidated for the first time in the first quarter of fiscal 2006, represented about 4% of total revenue in the quarter, and revenue in the quarter from the sale of previously reserved products was less than $1.0 million.

The Company`s gross margin for the second quarter was 36.1%, compared to 33.3% last quarter. The improvement in gross margin was principally due to a favorable product sales mix and better production yields. The Company booked additional reserves for possible excess and obsolete inventory of approximately $1.5 million during the quarter.

In response to strong demand from mobile handset manufacturers and other customers, OmniVision increased its inventories during the quarter. At October 31, 2005, inventories were $71.1 million, compared to $61.4 million on July 31, 2005 and $58.4 million at April 30, 2005. Most of the increase was from work-in-progress, representing products which will become available for sale in the third quarter. Inventory turnover remained within the Company`s target range of four to five times per year.

The Company ended the period with a strong cash and short-term investments position totaling $266.1 million, which is net of the cash used in the Company`s share repurchase program as discussed below.

`We are delighted to report record revenue and earnings for the quarter,` said Shaw Hong, OmniVision`s president and chief executive officer. `We achieved strong growth and solid gross margins during the quarter, which we believe are indicative of broad market acceptance of our family of image sensors in both mainstream and advanced applications. We are optimistic about our future prospects.`

      Share Repurchase Update

During the quarter, the Company purchased 4,620,000 shares for $62.4 million, for an average cost of $13.51 per share. Share repurchases during the quarter increased earnings in the quarter by $0.02 per share. Since June 2005, when OmniVision`s Board authorized up to $100 million of the Company`s cash to repurchase its own stock in an open market program, OmniVision has repurchased 5,870,000 shares at a total cost of $79.6 million.

      Outlook

Based on current trends, the Company expects fiscal third quarter 2006 revenue to be in the range of $130-$140 million and diluted EPS to be in the range of $0.42-$0.47 per share.
