Cheap solar panels from China are all over Europe – and everyone is freaking out
Feb 8 2024 - Europe is installing more solar panels than ever before, thanks to a flood of cheap Chinese solar panels, driving installations by 40% last year. But it comes at a hefty cost: Local solar manufacturers are on the brink of a total collapse that could happen within weeks.
      ...

But not everyone is happy about that. German Economy Minister Robert Habeck wrote to the EU that tariffs on Chinese imports could end Europe’s impressive expansion of green energy, making 90% of the PV market more expensive.

“I have heard that the commission may impose safeguard measures against imports of photovoltaic (PV) modules from China. I have very strong concerns about this,” the letter said, according to Reuters.

Habeck added that the move would put European companies that assemble and install solar panels using Chinese parts at risk as well.

EU Commission guards against trade measures to support solar industry
BRUSSELS, - Feb 5 (Reuters) - The European Union needs to take into account its ambitious targets for solar power deployment if it considers any measures to curb imports of photovoltaic panels, wafers and other components, a senior EU official said on Monday.

European Commissioner Mairead McGuinness told the European Parliament that the EU was working on a vast set of instruments to support the solar industry. Currently, 97% of the panels deployed in Europe are imported, mainly from China.

"Given that we currently rely to a very important degree on imports to reach EU solar deployment targets, any potential measure needs to be weighed against the objectives we have set ourselves when it comes to the energy transition," she told lawmakers.

Brussels considers support for solar panel makers as Chinese imports flood market- FT
Jan 27 (Reuters) - Brussels is considering emergency support measures for Europe's solar panel manufacturing industry as a flood of cheap Chinese imports threatens domestic production, the Financial Times reported on Saturday.

The European Commission measures could include an anti-dumping investigation against China leading to punitive tariffs or incentives to national governments to keep plants going, the report said, citing EU officials.

How Chinese manufacturers are eclipsing Europe’s solar industry
Panel producers in the bloc have not managed to scale up supply chains sufficiently to compete globally

Jan 21, 2024 - Europe’s solar industry is facing its deepest crisis in more than a decade as steep competition from China erodes manufacturing in the sector, rendering the continent’s hope of greater energy independence even more wishful.

More solar panels were installed than ever before across the EU last year in a boon for the bloc’s climate goals.

However, that was partially made possible by an influx of Chinese equipment, causing profits for local manufacturers to plunge.

Canadian Solar gets supply contract for largest battery storage project in UK
Dec 7 (Reuters) - Canadian Solar (CSIQ.O) has secured a contract to supply battery storage technology to Danish green investment company Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners for use in the UK's largest battery storage project.

The technology will be supplied by a Canadian Solar majority-owned unit for the Coalburn 1 project in Scotland and it will be used to support and stabilize the National Grid transmission network during peak consumption hours, the company said on Thursday.

It did not provide financial details of the contract.

Battery storage, used to back up intermittent renewable power supply to stabilize the grid, is an evolving technology, and there are very few large-scale operational projects in the world.

Installation of the project is scheduled for the first quarter of 2025, Canadian Solar said.

Coalburn 1 is the first project to be developed by the partnership between Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and UK-based Alcemi.

3 Solar Stocks That Could Be Multibaggers in the Making
      Auszug:

Canadian Solar (NASDAQ:CSIQ) is one of the world’s largest solar module manufacturers and project developers, producing high-quality solar modules for residential, commercial, industrial and utility-scale customers globally. Like the two entries above, Canadian Solar had impressive revenue and earnings growth in the past two years, fueled by a strong global demand for solar energy and projects.

In the first quarter of this year, the solar company beat earnings on an EPS-basis. At that time, Canadian Solar expected total revenues to come between $9.0 and $9.5 billion, up from the previous guidance that had given a wider range of $8.5 to $9.5 billion. Fast forward to their third quarter results; while Canadian Solar missed revenue and EPS estimates, management expects 2024 to be a significant growth year for the company.

Recurrent Energy Receives 490 Million Brazilian Reais Financing for Ciranda Cluster in Brazil
GUELPH, ON, Nov. 22, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Recurrent Energy, a global developer and owner of solar and energy storage assets, announced today that it has fully received 490 million Brazilian reais (approximately US$100 million) of non-recourse project financing for its 300 MW Ciranda Solar Power Cluster (Ciranda Cluster) in Brazil. Completed in August 2023, Ciranda Cluster was developed by Recurrent Energy, who is now the long-term owner and operator of Ciranda Cluster.

Ciranda Phase I issued a BRL 285 million bond in a private placement with investment funds managed by Vinci Partners (NASDAQ: VINP), a leading alternative investment platform in Brazil, while Ciranda Phase II secured a BRL 205 million facility with Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social (BNDES), a Brazil-based state-owned development bank. Both financings are inflation-indexed to the National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), aligning cost of debt with the inflation-indexed operating cash flows of the projects.

Ismael Guerrero, CEO of Recurrent Energy, said, "We are pleased to extend our long-standing partnership with BNDES and reinforce our presence in the Brazilian capital markets. Brazil has established itself as the largest renewable energy market in Latin America, and BNDES's and Vinci's participation in the funding of our solar portfolio represent a vote of confidence in the leadership position we have established in Brazil's renewable energy sector."

Ciranda Cluster is fully operating and powered by Canadian Solar's high efficiency BiHiKu modules. Both Ciranda Phase I and Ciranda Phase II projects won in a private auction held by COPEL Energia, one of the top 10 energy trading companies in Brazil, with a 15-year, inflation-adjusted PPA.

Canadian Solar Announces U.S. Solar Cell Manufacturing Facility in Jeffersonville, Indiana
GUELPH, ON, Oct. 30, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Canadian Solar Inc. (the "Company" or "Canadian Solar") (NASDAQ: CSIQ), headquartered in Guelph, Ontario, today announced that it is establishing a 5 GW Solar PV cell production facility at the River Ridge Commerce Center in Jeffersonville, Indiana.

Canadian Solar is building a state-of-the-art solar photovoltaic cell manufacturing plant with an annual output of 5 GW, equivalent to approximately 20,000 high-power modules per day. The Jeffersonville facility represents a projected investment of more than $800 million and will create approximately 1,200 skilled high-tech jobs once production is fully ramped up. The solar cells produced at this facility will be used at the previously announced 5 GW module assembly plant in Mesquite, Texas. Production at the Jeffersonville facility is expected to begin by the end of 2025.

"Indiana's strong advanced manufacturing sector positions the state to help lead the global energy transition, developing and powering new solutions in batteries, solar and hydrogen," said Governor Eric Holcomb. "Canadian Solar's new U.S. location in Jeffersonville will put our skilled Hoosier workforce at the center of cultivating solar power, making energy efficient panels more accessible to consumers across the country."

United States Senator Mike Braun stated, "Indiana is a proud leader both in the Midwest and the country in manufacturing and innovation. I'm pleased to know that this new solar manufacturing facility opening in Jeffersonville will create many new jobs for Hoosiers and stimulate the local economy."

Emphasizing the importance of this new facility, Thomas Koerner, Senior Vice President of Canadian Solar, said, "Establishing this factory is a key milestone that will enable us to better serve our U.S. customers with the most advanced technology in the industry. This is the second of the anticipated long-term investments we expect to make in the U.S. as we think strategically about a local, sustainable and clean energy supply chain and to fulfill the long-term requirements of the local-content rules of the recently established IRA. We thank the State of Indiana, Clark County, and the City of Jeffersonville for their critical support and look forward to working with them as we grow."
