FPX Nickel Corp. has highlighted the potential for the company's Baptiste project in central British Columbia to produce refined nickel with a significantly lower carbon footprint than other sources of production in the global nickel industry. These findings are based on the project's recent preliminary economic assessment (PEA), which outlined the development of a conventional processing facility powered by low-carbon hydroelectric power for the production of a refined, high-grade (63 per cent nickel) product capable of bypassing smelting and being sold directly to end-users.
Highlights
The carbon intensity of Baptiste operations is expected to average 2.40 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) per tonne of refined nickel production (t CO2/t refined Ni).
Baptiste carbon intensity compares very favourably with published literature estimating the carbon intensity of existing nickel production from various mineral deposit types:
7.19 t CO2/t refined Ni for Class 1 nickel production from sulphide ore;
27.50 t CO2/t refined Ni for Class 1 nickel production from laterite ore;
45.00 t CO2/t refined Ni for ferronickel production from laterite ore;
69.00 t CO2/t refined Ni for nickel pig iron production from laterite ore.
Results summarized herein assume no sequestration of carbon dioxide in Baptiste tailings.
"These results, taken in combination with the recent PEA, position Baptiste as a truly disruptive project in the global nickel industry, with the potential to become a significant nickel producer at both low-cost and low-carbon intensity for the electric vehicle battery and stainless steel markets," commented Martin Turenne, FPX's president and chief executive officer. "Importantly, these estimates of Baptiste's carbon footprint do not account for the potential sequestration of CO2 in the project's tailings, which our ongoing research collaboration with the University of British Columbia suggests could act as a sizable carbon storage facility and further lower the project's net carbon emissions below 2.40 t CO2/t refined Ni. Based on the diesel and electricity consumption for mining and processing activities outlined in the PEA, the carbon intensity of Baptiste operations is expected to average 2.40 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of refined nickel production over the project's 35-year mine life.

Finder’s fees of $135,210 were paid on a portion of the proceeds from the Offering. A director of the Company subscribed for 200,000 shares for gross proceeds of $110,000.
Concurrent with the closing of the Offering, and as announced in the Company’s October 7, 2020 news release, the Company has issued 7,750,037 common shares of the Company at a price of $0.55 per share in settlement (the “Debt Conversion”) of the $4,262,521 principal and interest owing on the long-term loan provided to the Company by its Chairman Peter Bradshaw (the “Bradshaw Loan”). Die Historie ab 2009 liest sich wie ein Glücksfall für FPX. Hat doch der ( Vorbesitzer bis 2015 - " Nickel wurde als nicht zum Kerngeschäft gehörend eingestuft ") wohl nie erwartet, dass Nickel einmal so gesucht sein könnte:
Der Decar Nickel District, das Vorzeige-Nickelgrundstück des Unternehmens, ist eine Greenfield-Entdeckung einer Nickelmineralisierung in Form einer natürlich vorkommenden Nickel-Eisen-Legierung namens Awaruite. Es stellt ein vielversprechendes Ziel für den Tagebau mit großen Tonnagen dar. Diese Lagerstätte enthält wenig oder gar keine Sulfide, was bedeutet, dass sie nur wenig oder gar keine saure Minendrainage erzeugen kann. Erste metallurgische Testarbeiten zeigen, dass die Nickel-Eisen-Legierung durch konventionelle zweistufige Zerkleinerung und magnetische Abtrennung, gefolgt von Schwerkraftkonzentration, gewonnen werden kann - und keine chemischen Reagenzien benötigt, wodurch eine weitere potenzielle Umweltbelastung deutlich reduziert wird.

Die Transaktion wurde von den Aktionären des Unternehmens auf einer außerordentlichen Versammlung am 16. November 2015 genehmigt und die Transaktion wurde am 18. November 2015 abgeschlossen.
Standort & Infrastruktur
Das Grundstück Decar ist 245 Quadratkilometer groß und umfasst einen Teil des ultramafischen/ophiolitischen Mount Sidney Williams-Komplexes 90 km nordwestlich von Fort St. James in Central BC. Eine Nickel-Eisen-Legierungs-Mineralisierung wurde in vier Zielgebieten innerhalb dieses Komplexes identifiziert, was durch petrographische Untersuchungen, Elektronensondenanalysen und Probenentnahmen bestätigt wurde. Das Grundstück selbst liegt zwei Autostunden von Fort St. James entfernt auf einer schnellen Holzfällerstraße (die ersten 40 Minuten davon sind eine asphaltierte Straße). Die Transaktion wurde von den Aktionären des Unternehmens auf einer außerordentlichen Versammlung am 16. November 2015 genehmigt und die Transaktion wurde am 18. November 2015 abgeschlossen.
Standort & Infrastruktur
Das Grundstück Decar ist 245 Quadratkilometer groß und umfasst einen Teil des ultramafischen/ophiolitischen Mount Sidney Williams-Komplexes 90 km nordwestlich von Fort St. James in Central BC. Eine Nickel-Eisen-Legierungs-Mineralisierung wurde in vier Zielgebieten innerhalb dieses Komplexes identifiziert, was durch petrographische Untersuchungen, Elektronensondenanalysen und Probenentnahmen bestätigt wurde. Das Grundstück selbst liegt zwei Autostunden von Fort St. James entfernt auf einer schnellen Holzfällerstraße (die ersten 40 Minuten davon sind eine asphaltierte Straße). Eine Zweiglinie der Canadian National Railway befindet sich weniger als 5 Kilometer östlich des Ziels Baptiste und das Stromnetz von BC Hydro verläuft innerhalb von 110 Kilometern südlich des Grundstücks.
