I remember as a kid always jumping for joy when I saw the world-famous golden arches of McDonald’s (NYSE: MCD). With such a strong marketing push and every kid’s good friend Ronald McDonald, who didn’t get excited when seeing one of their thousands of restaurants all over the world?
Unfortunately, we all have to get older (I’m no exception) and as I have kids now, I look to see MCD more as an investment than a place to eat (although they have upgraded their menu in recent years with relatively healthy salads and grilled sandwiches). So, let’s take a look.
MCD has continued to grow since my Happy Meal days, and as of Sept. 30, 2011, the chain has 33,144 restaurants, 81% of which are franchised (26,571 to be exact). The company is sitting right near an all-time high and sports a market capitalization exceeding $100 billion, which begs the question if MCD is over-valued?
Looking at its competitors, it appears that MCD is reasonably valued and, when you consider its world-class management team and top of the heap brand equity, the stock still has room to move higher. MCD trades at a 19.5x trailing P/E and 17.5x forward P/E, while competitor Yum! Brands (NYSE: YUM) trades at a 23.5x trailing P/E and 18.6x forward P/E. Wendy’s (NASDAQ: WEN) trades at a forward 24.6x P/E, but has no trailing P/E because the company lost money this past year. MCD also has a superior return on assets of 15.9% against YUM’s 14.4% and WEN’s paltry 2.8%.
MCD has a considerably greater dividend yield (which management has been terrific in consistently raising over the decades) at 2.8%, whereas YUM only yields 1.9% and WEN sits at 1.5%. Finally, while MCD trades at a considerably higher P/B and P/S, that is understandable when we see the operating margins dramatically higher at 30.5% over the past 12 months, while YUM is only at 15.9%, and WEN at a small 5.8%.
All three of these aforementioned stocks have been performing well and are sitting right near 52-week highs, but I expect five years from now, MCD and its golden arches will be the one most likely to have us jumping for joy.

McDonald’s Corp. (MCD) plans to increase investment in China, its third-largest market, by 50 percent this year after the world’s largest fast-food chain opened a record 200 stores in 2011.
Spending will focus on opening an expected 225 to 250 outlets, the Oak Brook, Illinois-based company said in an e- mailed statement today. It didn’t provide a specific figure for its investment target.
McDonald’s is accelerating expansion in China, where it trails Yum! Brands Inc. (YUM)’s KFC Corp. McDonald’s has more than 1,400 restaurants in the world’s second-largest economy, according to today’s statement. KFC has more than 3,200, its website shows.
Yum! agreed to buy Chinese hot-pot seller Little Sheep Group Ltd. last year to extend its lead as the nation’s biggest restaurant operator. The Louisville, Kentucky-based company also owns the Pizza Hut and Taco Bell brands.
McDonald’s planned to increase investment in China by 40 percent in 2011 and open 175-200 restaurants, the company said in Dec 2010.

Olympics and McDonald's close to new Olympic deal: IOC
BERLIN (REUTERS) - Fast food chain McDonald's and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) are close to agreeing a new, eight-year sponsorship contract and the deal could be sealed this month, the IOC's marketing chief said on Tuesday.
McDonald's, whose contract runs out after this year's London Olympics, will meet IOC officials in Austria during the Innsbruck Youth Olympics starting on Friday to finalise details.
'The situation is positive and I don't see any obstacle. We are very close,' IOC marketing commission chairman Gerhard Heiberg told Reuters. 'We will meet in Innsbruck and finalise everything. Hopefully we will sign the contract there.' Mr Heiberg said the new, four-Games deal would include the 2020 summer Olympics, which have yet to be awarded to a host, as well as the 2014 winter Games in Sochi, the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and the 2018 Pyeongchang winter Olympics.
McDonald's is one of 11 top sponsors who contribute an estimated US$100 million (S$129 million) each for every two-Games package of one winter and one summer Games though the IOC does not release details on individual deals.

By the way, mich überzeugt es...
