POSCO Holdings stands out against rival on expansion to battery business

POSCO Holdings Inc. has successfully transformed itself into a battery-focused company following its conversion into a holding company, has seen its stock prices rise due to improved corporate valuation, while its closest rival Hyundai Steel Co. still faces challenges from the downturn in the steel business.

According to the Korea Exchange, Hyundai Steel’s stock price closed at 33,700 on Wednesday, down by 1.03 percent from the previous session. While the stock has recorded a 10 percent rise year-to-date, it failed to match the 16.96 percent increase of the broader Kospi index. Hyundai Steel shares currently trade at a 46 percent decrease from its peak of 63,000 won in May 2021.

Unlike Hyundai Steel, POSCO Holdings has witnessed a 40 percent surge in its stock price this year. Notably, the trading volume has surpassed last year’s level, indicating a strong buying interest. Last month, POSCO Holdings’ stock price even surpassed its previous peak in 2021.

The divergence in stock price trends between the two companies can be attributed to POSCO Holdings’ timely move into the battery value chain. The investment frenzy in the electric vehicle battery stocks was ignited by the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and the mobility transition from internal combustion engines to EVs. POSCO Holdings, which is strengthening its raw materials business, such as lithium and nickel trading, has gained attention in the market for its high growth potential.

POSCO International to supply over 6.5 mil. motor cores to Hyundai Motor

POSCO International said Thursday it has clinched an additional contract with Hyundai Motor to supply 2.5 million units of a key auto component for electric vehicles (EVs), raising the total orders from Hyundai to 6.85 million.

POSCO Mobility Solution, a subsidiary of POSCO International, will supply the driving motor cores for the automaker from 2025 to 2034, the company said.

Driving motor core is a key component that generates electricity in EVs and its quality determines the vehicle performance.

The latest deal came after two previous supply agreements POSCO International signed with Hyundai in November last year and January this year, under which POSCO will supply 3.4 million and 950,000 motor cores for Hyundai hybrid SUVs and semi-midsize electric SUVs, respectively.

That puts the total supply orders from Hyundai at 6.85 million.

Canada, Quebec to provide about C0 million for GM-POSCO battery materials facility

OTTAWA, May 29 (Reuters) - Canada's federal government and the Quebec province will each provide about C$150 million ($112 million) for a General Motors-POSCO Chemical (GM.N)(005490.KS) battery materials facility that is expected create about 200 jobs in the country, the Canadian industry ministry said on Monday.

The U.S. carmaker and South Korea's POSCO outlined their plan last year to build the facility in Becancour, Quebec, to produce cathode active material (CAM) for electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

The companies aim to have the plant, described on Monday as a more than C$600-million project, running by 2025.

"This investment in GM-POSCO's new facility in Becancour will help further position Quebec as a key hub in Canada's growing EV supply chain," Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said.

The CAM produced at the plant will be used to make GM's Ultium batteries that will power the company's EVs, such as the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC HUMMER EV and Cadillac LYRIQ.

SKC, POSCO partner up to develop next-generation battery materials

SKC, an advanced materials maker under Korea's SK Group, said Tuesday it is joining hands with steel giant POSCO Holdings to develop next-generation secondary battery components as part of efforts to boost competitiveness in the rapidly growing industry.

SKC and POSCO signed a comprehensive business agreement earlier in the day, under which they will work together to develop anode materials, one of the key components for electric vehicle (EV) batteries, with a focus on lithium metal anodes that come with an enhanced energy density, SKC said in a release.

POSCO Future M-GM venture secures $221 mil. funding from Canadian gov't

POSCO Future M, a major Korean manufacturer of secondary battery materials, said Tuesday its joint venture with General Motors has secured C$300 million ($221 million) in funding from the Canadian government for their envisioned cathode plant in Quebec.

Canadian Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne made the announcement Monday (Canada time) during a visit to the construction site in Becancour, where Quebec Premier Francois Legault and other officials were also present, according to POSCO Future M.

POSCO Future M and GM's joint venture, Ultium CAM, is building what will be their first cathode manufacturing facility in Canada in a project valued at $633 million. The factory aims to be completed in the second half of 2024.

POSCO International enters battery materials business

POSCO International has entered the secondary battery materials business in support of its parent firm's effort to specialize in eco-friendly materials, a company official said Monday.

The trading firm signed a long-term supply contract with FARU Graphite in Tanzania, a subsidiary of Australian mining company Black Rock Mining, to receive 750,000 tons of natural graphite over the next 25 years after investing $10 million (13.2 billion won).

FARU Graphite has a graphite mine in Mahenge, Tanzania, which is the world's second-largest by reserves. The Mahenge mine currently has a 25-year mining life. POSCO International plans to secure a supply of natural graphite during the period and provide it to POSCO FutureM, the group's secondary battery producer.

POSCO International has decided to expand its steel trading and energy businesses in Southeast Asia and Australia to help boost Korea's faltering outbound shipments, company officials said Thursday.

The steelmaker held an Asia Growth Strategy meeting in Bangkok, Thursday, to discuss ways to target the Asian market, which has huge business potential. Asia, excluding China and Japan, is an important region that accounts for about 32 percent of POSCO International's global business despite the recent increase risk posed by China.
