Prionics AG and Paradigm Genetics, Inc. of the United States have started a joint development of innovative diagnostics for the rapid detection of Bovine Spongiform E ncephalopathy (BSE) in cattle and Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) in humans. Prionics AG has established itself as a leader in prion diagnostics with the introduction of the concept of Active Targeted BSE-Surveillance based on the rapid diagnostic test Prionics-Check. New diagnostic developments will focus on both post mortem and ante mortem tests for animals and humans. Paradigm Genetics brings to the collaboration its expertise in the design and development of novel assay formats, specifically its vast knowledge and experience in the development of rapid and high throughput testing techniques that can be performed outside the research laboratory.

First BSE Case in German-born cattle
A German-born cow infected with BSE has been detected in Germany using the Prionics BSE-Test, Prionics-Check. Germany has until now reported to be BSE-free, with the only other 6 BSE-cases in the country involving imported animals.
The BSE-infection was detected in a cow presented for normal slaughter in an abattoir in north Germany. The BSE-test was carried out in a private monitoring program offered by Prionics partner-laboratories throughout Germany. The private BSE-tests allow for meat producers to test their animals for BSE at slaughter.
The BSE-animal was slaughtered on 22 November and tested positive for BSE the same evening in the laboratories of Artus GmbH in Hamburg. The animal was subsequently retested at the German BSE-Reference Center in Tübingen, which announced today that it had confirmed the original Prionics-Check result.
