Wal-Mart nach Thanksgiving-Rekordverkaufszahlen im Plus - 500 Beiträge pro Seite

Die Aktie des amerikanischen Einzelhändlers Wal-Mart Inc. kann am Montag im Handel in den USA deutlich zulegen nachdem das Unternehmen Rekordverkaufszahlen gemeldet hat.

Am Tag nach Thanksgiving, traditionell einer der umsatzstärksten Tage im Jahr, verzeichnete der Einzelhandelsriese einen Rekordumsatz von 1,43 Mrd. Dollar nach 1,25 Mrd. Dollar im Vorjahr. Dies entspricht einem Anstieg von 14 Prozent. Experten sind sich jedoch nicht sicher, ob diese Zahlen bereinigt werden müssen. Denn Wal-Mart könnte in diesem Jahr von Schnäppchenjägern besonders profitiert haben.

Die Aktie gewinnt wie auch andere Werte aus dem Einzelhandelssektor knapp 3 Prozent auf 55,29 Dollar.

Die gesamten Thanksgiving-Umsätze im Einzelhandel in den USA sind in diesem Jahr im Vergleich zum Vorjahr ebenfalls um deutliche 10,9 Prozent angestiegen. In dem Zeitraum vom vergangenen Freitag bis Samstag verzeichneten die Einzelhändler in den USA diesen Anstieg. Am Freitag alleine kletterte der Umsatz im Vorjahresvergleich um 12,3 Prozent, am Samstag um 9 Prozent.

Wal-Mart sales show negative real consumer growth

Analysts are too quick to use Wal-Mart`s latest Thanksgiving sales numbers as proof that the consumer is driving a growing economy. They could use a lesson in analytical reasoning. The fact that Wal-Mart sold 1.43 billion during a given period this year and only 1.25 billion during the same period last year shows that sales are up 14 percent for Wal-Mart, but only flat at best for the economy. You can see this yourself instantly on Wal-Mart`s Investor Relations web-page, in two or three clicks.

Open up their 2002 financial report. It jumps out at you from the first and second paragraph of the report. Wal-Mart added 200 stores to the chain in 2002, and are proud to tell you that they grew by 13.8 percent! They provide a list of the number and type of stores in each and every state. In that list, their "Superstore Centers" are the most impressive. They tell us that these stores can have over 500 employees. They are indeed huge and wonderful, but how is this relevant you ask?

Open the 2001 financial report and look at the list of stores. You will notice that the number of "Superstore Centers" increased from 888 in 2001 to 1066 in 2002, a whopping 20 percent increase in U.S. Superstores! Why have their sales only increased by 14 percent? Based on this kind of company growth in numbers, shouldn`t we expect to see 14 percent growth? As a matter of fact we should see a lot more.

Has everyone forgotten 9/11? A mere 2 months after 9/11 last year, Wal-Mart sold 1.25 billion on a given Thanksgiving Friday. One year later, after growing by 13.8 percent and increasing their number of "Superstore Centers" by 20% they can only achieve 14 percent better sales, under no terrorist threat, and with interest rates .5% more favorable? The conclusion is that the consumer-based economy is "flatlining" at best. It is certainly not growing.

If analysts were actually required to analyze anything, there would be a lot of empty offices on Wall Street.
