      Geoworks Inc. ( GWRX / 896368 )

      Unternehmensbereich:

Geoworks Corporation is a provider of mobile e-commerce and information services, software and professional technical services. In addition, the Company offers complete project management and software engineering for complex projects. It offers information services, including advertising-sponsored content, to the growing universe of mobile devices. The Company has previously developed and marketed operating system and application software for the wireless device market, and many of its current service offerings are based on the technology it has developed.

For the six months ended 9/30/99, revenues increased 64% to $4.6 million. Net loss fell 71% to $2.8 million. Revenues benefitted from increased professional service revenues. Lower loss reflects lower research and developement expenditures due to reductions in staffing and related costs.

      Hallo an alle,

      - CMP Media

Feb. 18, 2000 (LTH - CMP via COMTEX) -- This month`s WAP Forum meeting in Rome should have been a veritable Bacchanalia. There`s lots to celebrate: The group`s Wireless Application Protocol is poised to be the standard for a new world of mobile Internet connections. Interoperability testing is beginning. Projections for the growth of the wireless Web are skyrocketing.

Geoworks` licensing plan charges service providers, handset manufacturers, application developers, content providers and any other company using WAP $20,000 a year, although Geoworks will not charge companies with less than $1 million in annual revenue. Server manufacturers would also be charged 10 percent of the hardware cost, or a minimum royalty of $1 for each user or product including the software. Geoworks` intellectual property is patented in the United States and Japan only.

WAP Forum Chairman Gregory Williams opened the Rome meeting by dismissing the Geoworks announcement as "just a distraction." He nevertheless felt the need to point out to the membership that Geoworks was not violating any WAP Forum rule. All members have a right to levy fair licensing fees, he said, adding that any disputes over the level of the fees would be settled by binding arbitration outside of the forum.

      Hallo an alle,

Licensing Fees Crash WAP Party -- Developers Foresee A Setback To The Wireless Web
      SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2000 1:19 AM
      - CMP Media

But a funny thing happened on the way to the forum. Geoworks Corp. (Alameda, Calif.) broke ranks with its WAP Forum partners just weeks before the event and announced plans to charge almost every company deploying WAP services in the United States and Japan for its patented technology. It was all the WAP community could talk about: How much damage would this added cost do to the fledgling platform? And how many more licensing fees were coming from other technology companies?

By leveling licensing fees so widely-and so early in WAP`s deployment-Geoworks may be stifling the standard`s attraction as a platform for new applications and services, according to some forum members. "It is a mistake, from the business end, to try and charge content deliverers. It is contrary to the way the Internet evolved," says Chuck Parrish, WAP Forum vice chairman and executive vice president at Phone.com Inc. (Redwood City, Calif.).

Geoworks may only be the first WAP Forum member to set pricing for its intellectual property rights (IPR), which it claims to be at the heart of WAP software.

Other, larger companies in the WAP Forum have also laid claim to IPR on WAP technology. Among them: Motorola Inc., NEC (Tokyo) and Nokia OY (Espoo, Finland). But so far, they have remained quiet about any charges they may choose to levy-letting the market develop first. Their fear is that crucial content providers and application developers may be scared off creating WAP services if they realize they are built around technology that comes with licensing fees.

Geoworks` announcement reminded a whole raft of companies looking to offer WAP services that the protocol, unlike the basic technology of the World Wide Web, belongs to a number of companies. Any one of these companies may levy additional fees further down the line.

Fear of multiple WAP licensing fees could even create enough impetus for a different technology to emerge, some WAP Forum members say. Pixo Inc. (Cupertino, Calif.), for instance, has been developing a microbrowser that uses either WAP or standard hypertext markup language (HTML) technology. The company says it is waiting to see how larger WAP Forum members such as Nokia look to resolve the Geoworks claim. "If the [licensing] issue is not resolved, we have HTML options. We know we are not going to get HTML license fees down the road," says Rich Rifredi, vice president of marketing at Pixo.

Much of the concern voiced over Geoworks` licensing plans stems from Internet companies with little experience of IPR licensing, says Williams, who is also vice president of wireless systems at SBC Communications Inc. "The licensing process is understood and proven in the telecom world. But the convergence of telecommunications and the Internet space creates voids in information, which I think exacerbates issues," he says.

As the ultimate cost of this kind of licensing is debated, Nokia and Phone.com are also said to have started investigations into the validity of Geoworks` license claims. Even if those claims go unchallenged, arbitration looks likely if the various members cannot agree to the terms of Geoworks` licensing structure.

Reiter, president of the consulting firm of Wireless Internet & Mobile Computing. "An increasing number of companies -- ranging from startups to large corporations -- have applications they want to wireless-enable -- but don`t know how -- and would like to employ for their own corporate use or to sell to other users."

Because each Mobile ASP client will require a range of technologies and services to best meet the needs of their mobile customers, Geoworks Mobile ASP is comprised of several different components, including application development, Premion Server+, systems integration, wireless network integration, 24x7 customer care and application hosting. Mobile ASP clients select the elements of this offering that suit their individual needs for a mobile customer service solution.

      WIRELESS INTERNET & MOBILE COMPUTING:

Wireless Internet & Mobile Computing to analyze wireless e-commerce, wireless web entrepreneurs at CTIA`s Wireless 2000 annual conference in New Orleans; Pioneering consulting firm joins Amazon, IBM, Fidelity and Geoworks.

      MONDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2000 1:29 PM
      - M2 Communications

FEB 28, 2000, M2 Communications - NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana -- Wireless Internet & Mobile Computing, the pioneering wireless Internet and e-commerce consulting firm, will examine the market dynamics of wireless e-commerce during the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association`s (CTIA) Wireless 2000 annual conference here.

Alan A. Reiter, president of the consulting firm, will analyze wireless e-commerce with representatives of Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), IBM (NYSE:IBM), Fidelity Personal Investments and Geoworks (NASDAQ:GWRX) during the "Making eBusiness Work for Wireless" panel, February 29, 3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., at the New Orleans convention center.

Reiter will discuss Wireless Internet & Mobile Computing`s analysis of key conditions that will be vital to the success of wireless e-commerce on a global scale. These conditions include:

      * Smart, synergistic data rather than individual content offerings that don`t related to each other,

      * Transactional services that enable subscribers to "do something" (such as transfer bank funds and purchase tickets) rather than static services,

      * Efficient applications that provide useful services with today`s data rates rather than relying on tomorrow`s faster speeds,

      * Pricing designed to jump-start the market for wireless Internet rather than penalizing early adopters,

      * Aggressive, public beta testing of new services rather than simply introducing "perfect" services and

      * Increased focus on the youth market rather than emphasizing the mobile professional.

"Too many wireless operators and content providers - especially in the United States - don`t understand the new economics of and the realities of creating innovative applications for the wireless Internet and wireless e-commerce market," says Reiter.

"The ability to comparison shop, purchase goods and services, analyze competitors and personalize wireless devices with musical tones and graphics - in real time - will, without exaggeration, revolutionize wireless communications and business processes around the world," Reiter says.

Wireless Industry & Mobile Computing reports that even in countries that are far ahead of the U.S., such as Japan, Finland, Sweden and the Czech Republic, the effects of wireless Internet and wireless e-commerce are only beginning to be felt.

The Washington, D.C. area consulting firm notes that within several years the combination of faster wireless networks, more ergonomic wireless data devices, thousands of "smarter" applications and the entry of Web-savvy and consumer-savvy retailers and content providers will generate billions of dollars in additional revenues and spawn businesses that don`t yet exist.
