SYDNEY, Jan 19 AAP - Telstra Corp Ltd has launched what it described as the "next generation" in DVD rentals - an internet-based DVD rental site.

Fetchmemovies is the latest service by Australia`s largest telco, allowing subscribers to choose from over 8,000 movie titles, delivering them to their front door.

"This is the next generation of DVD rentals," Telstra group managing director Wholesale, Broadband and Media Bruce Akhurst said today. advertisement

"In simple terms, fetchmemovies subscribers will be able to log onto website, select their movies or other programs, which will be home delivered within a couple of days."

Mr Akhurst said the wholly-owned Telstra entity, fetchmemovies, would set out to become the leading provider in the $500 million-plus DVD rental market in Australia.

The service would be available Australia-wide, to all internet users, through dial-up, narrowband or broadband internet.

Fetchmemovies is not the first online DVD rental site to hit Australia.

Consolidated Press Holdings Ltd (CPH) holds a 33 per cent stake in Home Screen Entertainment through Hoyts, while others in the market include Quickflix, Web Flicks, DVD Point and Meteor Entertainment.

But Mr Akhurst denied the online rental service would put the telco in competition with its pay-TV joint venture Foxtel.

"We are really competing head-on with the local video store, it`s not really a competitive service with Foxtel," he said.

Mr Akhurst said first release DVDs through fetchmemovies would be available within about six months from screening at the cinema, while Foxtel did not screen first release movies until after 12 months.

Subscribers will be able to log onto the website fetchmemovies.com.au, to have the DVDs delivered to the front door by Australia Post, he said.

"The DVDs arrive in your letterbox and it`s up to you when you send them back," Mr Akhurst said.

"There`s no due date and there`s no late fees."

Once the subscriber has watched the DVDs they send them back using a reply paid envelope and they can then go back to the website to replenish their DVD stocks.

Also today, Telstra announced it would extend its asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) broadband internet availability to an additional 400,000 telephone services by the end of March.

The telco said a year of testing found its transmission limits could be increased, allowing the company to improve the ADSL reach from 75 per cent of services to up to 90 per cent over the next three years.

Telstra Country Wide group managing director Doug Campbell said the new transmission limit would have a significant impact on ADSL availability in outer metropolitan and rural areas.

Telstra shares firmed one cent to $4.97.

Ich denke Telstra könnte bei weiter positivem Newsflow schon auch noch aus den Starlöchern kommen und mittelfristig auf 8 AUD steigen.

      Hi,

      klingt nicht schlecht:

      Telstra doubles internet custom

      By Fran Spencer

TELSTRA said yesterday it now had more than 500,000 broadband subscribers, an achievement it said was proof of the success of its multi-million-dollar promotional campaign.

Telstra said broadband customer numbers - including users of both BigPond and Telstra Wholesale - had more than doubled in the 12 months since January 2003, from 244,000 to 500,000.

"This growth is the result of Telstra stimulating the retail and wholesale markets with new products, aggressive marketing and competitive new pricing plans," said Telstra Broadband group managing director Bruce Akhurst.

The growth confirmed Telstra was on track to meet its target of one million broadband subscribers by the end of 2005 and $1 billion in broadband revenue by the end of 2006.

Telstra has launched two new services aimed at broadband customers this month - online DVD rental service fetchmemovies, announced on Monday, and an online music service offering legal downloads through bigpondmusic.com.

Also on Monday, Telstra announced plans to extend its ADSL broadband service to an extra 400,000 customers by the end of March, after tests showed transmission limits "can be increased".

Telstra aims to improve the reach of ADSL from 75 per cent of services to up to 90 per cent over the next three years.

Chief rival Optus also unveiled a broadband initiative yesterday, announcing two new premium IP services aimed at boosting the take-up of broadband by the business community.

Telstra to invest $31 mln in high speed internet in rural Aust
      Source: SYDNEY, Jan 27 AAP
      Published: Tuesday January 27 2004, 6:30 PM

Telstra Corp Ltd will invest a further $31 million to ramp up its high speed internet services in regional and rural Australia.

The nation`s largest telco will use the additional funds to roll out its advanced wireless data services in remote Australia before the end of the year.

Telstra Country Wide managing director Doug Campbell said the network extension would provide most Australians with an alternate high speed internet service.

Provision of services to rural and regional Australia has been a sticking point for the federal government as it prepares to try to sell its remaining 50.1 per cent stake in Telstra. advertisement

The telco said the network would cover 98 per cent of the population, allowing them access to emails, the internet and company networks.

Users can access the network as long as they have a compatible mobile phone or a PC card or modem used with a laptop or desktop computer.

The wireless data service, known as 1xRTT (single carrier radio transmission technology) operates over the CDMA network to transmit data at speeds of up to 144 kilobits per second.

"Being a wireless technology, 1x will be a boon for our rural customers who have CDMA coverage but no fixed infrastructure such as copper wires," Mr Campbell said.

"Up until now the only fast internet option for these customers has been satellite."

Mr Campbell said Telstra was developing a range of pricing and access plans to make the offering attractive to rural customers.

Telstra shares were one cent weaker at $4.93 today.
