      Leaner Qantas eyes near-record profit

Qantas`s two-year mission to slash $1 billion off its cost base will come under close scrutiny on Thursday, when the airline is expected to report a near-record first-half result and provide more details on its low-cost domestic subsidiary Jetstar.

With the stronger dollar and buoyant domestic aviation market expected to counter the impact of SARS on the airline`s international operations, the result is expected to be slightly below last year`s record first-half net profit of $352.2 million, bar any unforeseen abnormal costs.

Goldman Sachs JBWere has tipped a net profit of $314.2 million, Citigroup $336 million and UBS $326.8 million.

Forecasting a net profit of $330 million in a recent note, ABN Amro has cast doubts over Qantas`s two-year Sustainable Future Program, which it "conservatively" assumes may cut only $600 million from airline`s cost base.

While ABN Amro expects Qantas to meet its target of slashing $350 million in costs over 2003-04, the investment bank said there was still a "question mark" over the flagged $650 million in cuts over 2004-05, which it said were still largely contingent on union approval.

Qantas expects to save $385 million in labour costs over the two years - via job cuts, improved productivity and the increased casualisation of its workforce. The airline, however, is yet to reach agreement with its 14 unions over the wage and working conditions for Jetstar.

The Australian Services Union`s assistant national secretary, Linda White, said: "We will certainly go wild if people lose their jobs because of Jetstar."

Set to start flights in May, Jetstar will operate Qantas`s existing fleet of 14 Boeing 717s - fitted with 10 extra seats - before leasing its first 177-seat Airbus 320 in July.

CommSec analyst Matt Crowe estimates Jetstar could boost Qantas pre-tax profits by $60 million in 2004-05 and $365 million by 2010-11, assuming the airline expands passenger numbers at 4.5 per cent a year.

After putting aside $100 million to set up Jetstar, it is estimated Qantas will spend another $US1 billion ($1.26 billion) on buying Jetstar`s 20 A320s, which it plans to have in service by mid-2006.

Qantas shares rose 3c to $3.54.

Qantas to squeeze in Jetstar in May

After a one-month delay, Qantas is to announce the route structure and ticket prices for its low-cost subsidiary, Jetstar, in Melbourne later this week, as the new airline prepares to take to the skies by late May.
With the ruddy-faced comedian Magda Szubanski as its figurehead, there is no doubt glamour will not be the Jetstar`s strong point but, as far as comfort, the only major sacrifice the airline has made in its looming war with Virgin Blue is leg room.
As Qantas prepares to give the former Impulse fleet of 14 Boeing 717s their second repaint in three years, an extra row of 10 seats will be fitted to the 115-seater.
Qantas chief executive Geoff Dixon confirmed yesterday the Melbourne-based airline would focus on eastern Australia and would head west later.
If Jetstar follows the routes flown by QantasLink`s 717 fleet, as analysts are predicting, the budget carrier`s destinations from Sydney will initially include Newcastle, Launceston, Hobart, the Gold Coast, Cairns, Maroochydore, Mackay, Hamilton Island and Rockhampton. Although Jetstar is expected to target the largely economy-fare leisure routes where Qantas struggles to turn a profit, it is still uncertain whether the airline will fly main-city trunk routes during non-peak (ie, non-business traveller) periods.
Despite doing away with free meals, complimentary head-phones, flight lounges, frequent flyer points and free telephone bookings, Jetstar`s low-cost plans still pale in comparison to recent moves by Europe`s largest budget carrier RyanAir.
The Irish airline set a new benchmark last week by ordering its first fleet of Boeing 737s without reclining seats, window blinds, seat pockets and free baggage check-in.
Like Jetstar, Virgin Blue said it would maintain its practice of offering extra services - such a valet parking and airport lounges - on a user-pays basis.
"We`re a low-cost carrier but we`re also a service carrier and we intend to stay so," said Virgin`s head of public affairs, Amanda Bolger.
Qantas claims the airline`s bold plans to undercut Virgin Blue`s cost base will be largely helped by improving the productivity of its staff, efficiency of its aircraft, cutting maintenance costs and lowering reservation costs by encouraging passengers to book online.
In a bid to boost Qantas domestic`s proportion of online bookings from 30 per cent to 75 per cent on Jetstar, it is expected the low-cost offshoot will charge passengers an additional $10 each way if they book over the phone.
With Jetstar set to cuts costs by eventually simplifying its fleet to 23 177-seat Airbus 320s by mid-2005, Qantas is also hoping to drastically improve the turnaround times for its aircraft.
By way of example, Qantas said it could increase the utilisation of its entire domestic fleet of 80-odd aircraft by the equivalent of one aircraft if it improved the average turnaround time of its fleet by two minutes (from the average 35 minutes).
In comparison, the US low-cost airline South West Airlines can achieve turnaround times of 15 to 17 minutes.

Qantas receives backing for Singapore airline

SINGAPORE - Australia`s Qantas has said it will launch a new budget airline based in Singapore in a joint venture with Temasek Holdings and two local businessmen.

Temasek is already backing another low-cost airline, Tiger Airways, in conjunction with Singapore Airlines, and it is not ruling out making further investments in this fast-emerging market.

Temasek has already held talks with Malaysia`s AirAsia, which is looking to spin-off a separate budget carrier in Singapore, but there has not been any news so far on that score.

Qantas is investing S$50 million (US$29 million) to obtain a 49.9-percent stake in a new low-cost airline that may be called Jetstar Asia after Qantas` existing domestic budget carrier. Temasek meanwhile will have a 19-percent stake.

It is slated to start flying by the end of this year to Asian cities within five hours of Singapore`s Changi Airport, becoming the fifth budget carrier to fly out of Singapore.

The other backers are Tony Chew, chairman of diversified group Asia Resource Corp, who will have a 21.1-percent share, and F F Wong, chairman of Boustead Singapore, who will own 10 percent. Neither of the two businessmen is new to the aviation industry as they both were previously involved with Myanmar Airways.

Qantas has said it is confident it will get a license to operate out of Singapore. As for the routes, the airline has said that is up to the authorities to hand those out.

      Qantas hogs Oz-India route
      8 June 2004, Evening Standard
RITISH Airways` Australian partner Qantas appears to have scuppered plans for a low-cost airline targeted at backpackers to fly between Manchester and Melbourne via New Delhi.
The International Air Services Commission has granted Qantas all available capacity on the India-Australia route, saying Brisbane-based Backpackers Xpress was `not reasonably capable of implementing its application at this stage`.
There are just 2,100 seats a week available on the India-Australia route and the regulator ruled that the allocation should remain entirely with Qantas.
`The commission is aware that allocating all the India capacity to Qantas closes off the possibility of Backpackers Xpress operating via Delhi as proposed, at least until additional capacity is negotiated under the air services arrangements,` the commission said.

      BA may lift Qantas stake
      Bill Condie, Evening Standard
      23 August 2004

RITISH Airways could lift its share of dominant Australian carrier Qantas after the country`s main opposition party signalled it may be prepared to drop its objections to greater foreign ownership of the airline.

The Australian Labor Party told reporters at the weekend that it had an `open mind` on the issue, as compared with the government`s opposition to the idea.

Ironically the Qantas Sale Act came into force in 1995 under the former Labor government of Paul Keating which privatised Qantas.

That act guarantees Australian majority ownership of the airline but Qantas has kept up a campaign to have the restrictions lifted. Last week, while unveiling a record net* profit, the company said the policy increased its cost of capital.

Chairman Margaret Jackson said the airline was `fettered by a unique limitation` in the Qantas Sale Act because it restricted the company`s access to global equity capital and therefore the cost of that capital.

Chief executive Geoff Dixon estimated this meant Qantas was having to pay about 3% extra on the cost of that capital, an expensive proposition given the slim margins in the industry.

Labor`s transport spokesman, Martin Ferguson, told the Australian Financial Review newspaper that the business climate was very different from when Keating was in power.

`Australia must have regard for making sure that Qantas can survive in a tough international competitive world,` he said.

`Qantas will always be a major Australian employer and an Australian-icon, but the obligation on all politicians is to make sure that the legislative framework facilitates its growth and development.`

British Airways took a 25% stake in Qantas in 1995 and made it plain it would have liked more. However, subsequent rights issues* not taken up by BA have watered down its holding to 17%.
