Apple-TSMC partnership started from home dinner hosted by Morris Chang, says Jeff Williams
Josephine Lien, Taipei; Willis Ke, DIGITIMES [Tuesday 24 October 2017]

Though a business partner of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) for less than 10 years, Apple has become the largest customer of the world's largest foundry house in terms of revenue contribution. But their partnership started out with a home dinner hosted by TSMC chairman Morris Chang for Apple COO Jeff Williams in 2010, when both sides discussed the possibility of cooperating to integrate advanced technologies of both companies to fulfill their respective ambitions, Williams has disclosed.

Williams made the disclosure when speaking at a tech forum hosted by TSMC on October 23 to mark foundry house's 30th anniversary. He remembered that despite the substantial risks for Apple to bet heavily on TSMC without any contingency plans, both companies decided then to jointly stake on it, and the huge bet has proved a tremendous success.

Under the first deal, Apple contracted TSMC to fabricate all the application processor chips for its iPhone 4 devices in 2010, and the latter invested USS$9 billion and funneled a workforce of 6,000 people into the production of mobile chips at its base in the Southern Taiwan Science Park, successfully starting volume production of "almost perfect" chips within 11 months, according to Williams.

Though declining to disclose Apple's development plans for the next 10 years at the forum, Williams shared his industrial observations in the past decade. He said that after entering the era of smartphones, the semiconductor sector experienced a tradeoff between computing performance and power consumption, but thanks to technology advancements from TSMC, ARM and others, he believes the tradeoff is no longer necessary.

Williams said that in the next 10 years, the biggest problem lies not in computing performance, but in the lack of sufficient visions to apply new advanced technologies such as AI (artificial intelligence) as well as how to safeguard privacy.

He said Apple has many expectations for AI applications, but what the company needs is neither to make chips with faster computing performance nor to make cars able to fly, but to utilize advanced technologies to change the world, such as making use of semiconductors to achieve medical technology innovations.

TSMC 3nm fab construction to kick off in 2020, chairman says
Josephine Lien, Taipei; Jessie Shen, DIGITIMES [Monday 6 November 2017]

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) founder and chairman Morris Chang said at a recent company event that the pure-play foundry will start constructing its advanced 3nm wafer fab located at the Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP) in 2020.

TSMC is confident that the Taiwan government will be committed to settling all the water, power and land supply issues prior to the construction of the foundry's 3nm fab, said Chang. TSMC also remains confident the government will assist the establishment of the new fab with a complete package of measures, Chang added.

Chang also talked about the importance of artificial intelligence (AI) to TSMC's competitiveness. There are already mobile devices featuring AI capabilities, and the technology is expected to be used widely, such as healthcare applications, where AI could make a significant impact, Chang indicated.

TSMC has been investing in AI for its target markets including mobile computing, automotive electronics, IoT and high-performance computing, Chang noted. TSMC is gearing up to provide advanced process technologies and sufficient production capacities for more AI applications, which will make a positive contribution to company growth in the future, Chang said.

In addition, Chang reiterated TSMC's forecast that the global market for logic semiconductors will increase about 6% in 2017. The market will grow another 4-5% annually in 2018 and 2019, Chang said.

For TSMC, the company expects to post revenue growth of 5-10% annually over the next three years, Chang said. The estimate is made based on TSMC's revenues in US dollars.

Following Google’s strategy, Facebook wants to design its own chips for artificial intelligence (AI) applications. Facebook always has focused on building its own hardware, whether phones, cameras, and virtual reality (VR) headsets in the consumer space or custom servers in the data center. With the decision to build its own AI chips, Facebook could be aiming not only to improve Oculus’s computer vision capabilities but also to speed up its data center operations.

Facebook is joining nearly 20 other companies that are designing chips for deep learning applications, as shown below. Facebook’s strategy mirrors that of Google, Apple, and Tesla, which are designing chips in-house to increase control and ensure differentiation. If in-sourcing becomes the norm, chip suppliers like Intel and Nvidia will suffer, while foundries will gain more customers. In fact, almost every company in the list above is or likely will become a customer of Taiwan’s TSMC, the largest foundry in the world.

Apple reportedly among affected 7nm clients in TSMC virus incident
Monica Chen, Hsinchu; Jessie Shen, DIGITIMES Monday 6 August 2018

The computer virus outbreak at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has raised concerns about its impact on the foundry house's shipments particularly its 7nm chip output during the third quarter, a traditionally peak season for the contract chipmaker's clients such as Apple.

TSMC fabricates chip solutions for Apple and other mobile device vendors, and has reportedly kicked off its shipments for the forthcoming iPhones and other new smartphone models. The virus infection that occurred on the evening of August 3 forced the contract chipmaker to suspend some of its fab tools in Taiwan.

TSMC's major 12-inch fabs - Fab 12 at the Hsinchu Science Park (HSP) and Fab 15 at the Central Taiwan Science Park (CTSP) - are among those impacted by the virus outbreak, according to industry sources. Some of the impacted fabs were shut down for as long as over 10 hours resulting in damage to several thousand wafers, the sources noted.

At Fab 15, TSMC is ramping up its 7nm chip output to fulfill orders from mainly Apple. AMD, Qualcomm, Nvidia, Xilinx and several ASIC developers are other 7nm chip customers of the foundry, the sources said.

TSMC previously said about 10% of its revenues would be generated from its most-advanced 7nm process technology in the third quarter of 2018, and the proportion would reach 20% in the fourth quarter, with an over 20% in all of 2018.

Any shipment delays caused by this virus incident - which occurred just about two months after Morris Chang had retired - could undermine the customer trust that it had long built up, the sources speculated.

TSMC said the incident is expected to impact 3% of its third-quarter revenues, and delayed shipments in the third quarter will be recovered in the fourth quarter.

The foundry house is likely to recognize a total of NT$2.7-3 billion (US$88.2-98 million) in losses from the incident, the sources estimated, adding that among the losses, about NT$1 billion will be the result of scrapped wafers.

TSMC said in its update on August 5 to the development of the incident that it expects full recovery of production on August 6.

It attributed the incident to "misoperation during the software installation process for a new tool" without elaborating further.
