Baidu boasts 74 pct of China's search request share in Q1, research report
      Monday, June 01, 2009; Posted: 05:14 AM

      | PowerRating -- China's search page queries have hit 44.27 billion in the first quarter of 2009, a little lower than that in the fourth quarter of 2008, but Baidu.Com.Inc. (BIDU.NASDAQ), the largest Chinese language search engine company, accounted for 74.1 percent of the total, up 2.1 percentage points from the previous quarter.

iResearch Consulting Group, a leading market research firm in China, said in a research report that Google and Baidu received 95 percent of China's total search queries.

The research firm attributed Baidu's dominant share to increased searches for Spring Festival topics during the quarter. Besides, Baidu's ads for the Spring Festival Gala Evening held by CCTV, China's national TV station, also helped push up the requests.

The research firm forecasted that the second quarter would witness a sharp increase in queries, strongly contributed by prevalent issues like the anniversary of the Sichuan earthquake and A/H1N1 flue.

Baidu accounted for 63.5 percent of all search queries in 2008, according to iResearch

Google ist erster, Yahoo zweiter, Baidu dritter

      28.05.2009 11:42

China's Baidu Holds Talks With Its Striking Workers

      By LORETTA CHAO

BEIJING -- Executives of Baidu Inc., China's leading Internet search company, held talks over the weekend with striking workers who say they are angry over salary cuts and new sales commission policies that they believe are designed to force them out of their jobs.

Hundreds of Baidu employees in southern China have either stayed home or gone to the office and refused to work since May 4.

The industrial action burst into the open on Friday, when several hundred employees of the Shenzhen office marched to their local labor bureau to file a complaint against the company, according to strikers and officials in the labor bureau. In the nearby city of Guangzhou, the labor bureau said it had received complaints from "scores" of employees.
[baidu and striking workers] Associated Press

Baidu employs thousands of staff in China, which has the world's largest number of Internet users but a relatively immature Internet advertising market.

Baidu executives declined to comment. Several striking workers, who spoke to The Wall Street Journal on condition of anonymity, said that on May 1 Baidu cut the base salaries of sales agents, which averaged about 4,000 yuan ($590), by about 30%. At the same time it raised sales targets and threatened to withhold commissions and dismiss sales agents who failed to meet them.

The company "wants us to feel uncomfortable and choose to leave the company voluntarily," said one of the strikers in Shenzhen, adding that he didn't think negotiations would be easy.

Employees said they believe the measures apply only to staff in the company's southern offices. The strikers are demanding that the company cancel the new policies and fire the regional executives who introduced them. They will go to work on Monday to hear the company's response, and may continue the strike if they are not satisfied.

Baidu has been investing heavily in marketing to restore its image after receiving negative publicity late last year for carrying ads from unlicensed medical companies.

The company employs thousands of staff in China, which has the world's largest number of Internet users but a relatively immature Internet advertising market. Baidu relies heavily on its sales teams to aggressively call and educate potential customers, typically small- to medium-sized business owners with limited knowledge of Internet marketing.

Baidu is by far the leader in China's Internet search market with about three times the share of industry revenue as chief rival Google Inc. But it is facing a challenge from reduced advertising spend in the slowing economy and posted quarter-to-quarter falls in revenue in the last quarter of 2008 and the first quarter of 2009.

Still, Baidu reported that year-to-year income in the first quarter of 2009 rose 24% to 181.1 million yuan ($26.5 million), exceeding expectations despite spending 40 million yuan ($5.85 million) on a high-profile television ad campaign to offset the bad publicity.

Liu Ning, an analyst for consulting firm BDA China Ltd., said that despite its better-than-expected income performance, Baidu is facing growing pressure from all sides. "Their clients are small to medium-sized enterprises, which are under a lot of pressure now because of the economy," Mr. Liu said.

Baidu's shares have rebounded since taking a dive in November after the bad publicity. Shares closed at $235.01 Friday, 134% higher than its lowest trade in the past year.

Baidu to post high growth rate for years
      (China Daily)

Baidu to post high growth rate for years

Baidu's market share in China rose to 62.2 percent last year from 59.3 percent in 2007. [Agencies]

Baidu Inc, operator of China's most-used Internet search engine, will post a high growth rate "for years to come" as online demand surges in the world's third biggest economy, Chief Executive Officer Robin Li said.

The Chinese company plans to generate growth through its search-engine operations and won't shift focus, Li told analysts in a conference call last week. Baidu doesn't intend to follow Google Inc in offering online music, he said.

Baidu said first-quarter profit rose 24 percent as advertising sales surged after the company spent more on marketing to maintain its lead over Google in China, the world's biggest Internet market by users. The Beijing-based website's shares have gained 72 percent this year, outperforming Chinese Internet stocks including Tencent Holdings Ltd and Sina Corp.

Google, the world's biggest search engine, said in March it will start a free online music service in China with companies including Warner Music Group Corp and Sony Corp.

Baidu offers services that allow users to search for music files on the Internet. Advertising sales from related services account for less than 5 percent of revenue, Li said.

Opportunities in online music "have not been as strong as expected", Li said.

Baidu's market share in China rose to 62.2 percent last year from 59.3 percent in 2007, according to research company Analysys International. Google's share grew at a faster pace, to 27.8 percent from 23.4 percent, the Beijing-based researcher said.

The Chinese company's first-quarter net income rose to 181.1 million yuan ($26.5 million), or 5.22 yuan a share, from 146.6 million yuan, or 4.22 yuan, a year earlier, the Beijing-based company said in a statement. Sales jumped 41 percent to 810.7 million yuan.

First-quarter expenses for sales, marketing and administration climbed 39 percent to 204.3 million yuan from 147 million yuan a year earlier, the company said. This included about 40 million yuan spent on sponsorships during China Central Television's annual Spring Festival gala, the most-watched annual TV broadcast in the nation.

"Organic Internet user growth, government stimulus plans and Baidu's brand campaign on CCTV's Spring Festival Gala are major reasons for the upside," Zhao Ming, an analyst at Susquehanna Financial Group, wrote in an April 23 report. He has a "positive" rating on the stock.

Second-quarter sales will be 1.07 billion yuan to 1.1 billion yuan, Baidu said. That's more than the 983.6 million yuan average of 14 analysts' estimates.

China added 16.2 million Web users in the first quarter, the Xinhua News Agency reported last month, citing Xi Guohua, vice-minister of industry and information technology. The nation had 316 million Web users at the end of March, the report said. That's more than the total US population.
