Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited (CPF) reported earnings for 1Q 2013 at 1,026 million baht increased from 238 million baht of 4Q 2012, with confidence of further growth.
However, the profit in 1Q this year dropped by 70 per cent when compared with the same period of last year (calculated by excluding a one-time special item recorded in 1Q2012). This was significantly affected by shrimp disease EMS (Early Mortality Syndrome) in aquaculture business.
Mr. Adirak Sripratak, President and Chief Executive, said CPF’s operating results was adversely impacted by the new shrimp disease EMS which has widely spread in the shrimp industry in many countries as well as Thailand since late last year. EMS caused a low survival rate of cultured shrimp, hence slowed down shrimp farming in many areas. As a result, sales of aquatic feed has been impacted significantly and caused a decline of the operating results in 1Q2013. However, the government and CPF have been working on research and development of EMS disease management which is in a trial stage currently and has to wait for the results about 1-2 months. If the prevention measure is proved to be effective, the shrimp farming should return to normal level, said Mr. Adirek.
In addition, the oversupply situation of meat products in the market occurred since last year has started to improve. The prices of broilers and swine have recovered to normal level. However, production cost is still higher comparing to last year. For the second half of 2013, CPF expects prices of major raw materials to be lower than in the first half of 2013. Furthermore, CPF believes that its operating results for the second half of 2013 will return to normal. In addition, The company is confidence that its result operation will grow by 15% this year.
