Shares in Johnson Matthey jumped almost 13% on Friday after the investment arm of New York-based industrial firm Standard Industries nearly doubled its stake in the British chemicals maker to 10%, making it the largest shareholder.

Standard Latitude Master Fund had taken a 5.2% stake in Johnson Matthey in April last year and spurred speculation that it could lead to a possible takeover.

The increase in stake by Standard Latitude, controlled by Standard Investments and the co-chiefs of Standard Industries, would make them the largest shareholder in Matthey, according to LSEG data.

British autocatalyst maker Johnson Matthey is planning to sell its medical device components business as the company looks to streamline its portfolio of assets, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday.

The sale could value the medtech unit at several hundred million pounds, the report added, citing people familiar with the matter.

The company did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

The centuries-old firm, which traces its roots back to testing the purity of precious metals, had posted a 21% drop in its annual earnings last week due to higher costs and lower precious metal prices.

The company has identified several non-core businesses for disposal by the end of the fiscal 2023-2024 year, the report said.

Johnson Matthey has seen its stock drop more than 18% this year as it battles supply constraints and challenges in sourcing components from Ukraine.

Matthey's stock jumped as much as 35% to 2,536 pence on Friday, its highest since November. A London trader, on condition of anonymity, said the stake deal could be a prelude to "some kind of move", referring to possible transactions.

Standard Industries bought U.S.-based global specialty chemical company W. R. Grace & Co a year ago in a $4.63 billion deal.

As of Thursday, Matthey had a market value of 3.47 billion pounds ($4.36 billion).

Standard's stake disclosure comes a few months after Johnson Matthey announced plans to sell or exit its battery materials business in November. Its stock had slumped 32% since that announcement.

"We would consider this to be something like an ideal owner for (Johnson Matthey), operational overlap on the process catalyst business and an ability to take a long-term view on the cash generation from the Clean Air business," analysts at Jefferies wrote in a note.

Standard Latitude Master Fund, controlled by Standard Investments and the co-chiefs of Standard Industries, would now be Matthey's fifth-largest shareholder, according to Refinitiv data.

Ich denke wir sehen hier einfach nur, dass die Aktie mit der Branche zusammen in die Knie geht - das sollte sich früher oder später auflösen.

Ich konnte die Position zu 24,50 ausbauen, wenn es noch tiefer geht überlege ich nochmal etwas nachzulegen. Durch den deutlich zurückgekommenen Kurs ist die Aktie für mich allein schon wegen der Divirendite von rund 4% für 21/22 attraktiv - die Zukunftsaussichten durch die Branchenzugehörigkeit gibt es im Grunde kostenlos dazu.
Man wird natürlich einen langen Atem brauchen - mal schauen, was in 10 oder 20 Jahren daraus geworden ist - ich bin zuversichtlich.

Verwunderlich ist, dass JM nicht besonders viel Aufmerksamkeit bekommt, in manchen Foren gibt es noch nicht mal ein Thema zur Aktie. Auf der anderen Seite sind dafür viele große Adressen kräftig investiert - angefangen von Vanguard, über Threadneedle, Schroder bis hin zu BlackRock - alle jeweils zwischen 3 und 5% der Aktien. Das ist meist kein schlechtes Zeichen, finde ich.
