Lundin aims to strengthen Chilean presence after approval of project at key copper mine

SANTIAGO, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Lundin Mining hopes to strengthen its role as a major player in Chile's copper industry after a $600 million project for its key Candelaria mine was approved, a top executive said on Friday.

"The project involves the construction of various facilities and initiatives that, together, position us more strongly in copper production and represent continuous investment, local employment and development of local suppliers," the general manager of Minera Candelaria, Karina Brino, said.

She added that the approval means extending operations by another decade. Earlier this month, Chile's Environmental Assessment Commission gave the project the green light.

Candelaria produced 126,300 metric tons of copper in 2022. The company said the project will lead to 1,500 additional jobs, adding to the current workforce of about 7,000.

VANCOUVER, BC, Sept. 11, 2023 /CNW/ - (TSX: LUN) (Nasdaq Stockholm: LUMI) Lundin Mining Corporation ("Lundin Mining" oder das "Unternehmen") freut sich bekannt zu geben, dass die Umweltverträglichkeitsprüfung ("UVP") für die Verlängerung des Betriebs und der Lebensdauer der Mine Candelaria in Chile (die "UVP für die Optimierung von Candelaria und die Betriebskontinuität 2040") am 8. September 2023 von der regionalen Umweltkommission von Atacama ("COEVA") genehmigt wurde. Die Ausstellung der Resolución de Calificación Ambiental ("RCA") durch den Servicio de Evaluación Ambiental de la República de Chile ("SEA") wird für Oktober 2023 erwartet.
Die Umweltverträglichkeitsprüfung (UVP) für die Optimierung und Betriebskontinuität von Candelaria 2040 berücksichtigt mehrere Verbesserungen des derzeitigen Betriebs, die eine Verlängerung der Lebensdauer der Mine von 2030 im Rahmen der vorherigen UVP bis 2040 ermöglichen, und umfasst verschiedene Maßnahmen, die eine nachhaltige soziale, wirtschaftliche und ökologische Entwicklung in der Atacama-Region unterstützen werden. Die UVP wurde im Februar 2020 bei den Behörden eingereicht. Die Genehmigung ist ein wichtiger Meilenstein für die erfolgreiche Verlängerung der Betriebsdauer, einschließlich der Erschließung des Tagebaus La Española, wie im technischen Bericht vom Februar 2023 mit dem Titel "Technical Report for the Candelaria Copper Mining Complex, Atacama Region, Region III, Chile" dargelegt. Ich gehe davon aus, es wird zukünftig noch einige weitere Länder mit Rohstoffvorkommen geben, die Steuern verlangen > erhöhen werden, wie auch wenn möglich den Export nicht mehr ohne eine Vorstufe der Verarbeitung zulassen werden, um Jobs im eigenen Land zu kreieren.

The long-awaited Udokan project in Russia's far east is coming on stream at a challenging time. The United States imposed sanctions on its operator - Udokan Copper LLC - in April as part of a wave of restrictions placed on Russia due to its activities in Ukraine.

Copper prices also fell 14% in 2022 and are flat so far this year due to weaker than expected demand.

The project, however, relies on its proximity to top metals consumer China and on demand there, as well as future demand from the global green energy transition.

....auch wenn die Steuererhöhung für Chile wichtig ist und lt. Fitch für die Bergbauunternehmen verkraftbar ist, senkt sie doch den Gewinn um einiges.

Chile's miners ready to absorb higher domestic royalties, Fitch says

SANTIAGO, Sept 6 (Reuters) - Mining companies operating in Chile, the world's top copper producer, are well positioned to absorb higher domestic royalties required by a new law enacted by the country's leftist government, Fitch ratings agency said on Wednesday.

A long-awaited mining reform approved by Chilean lawmakers in May requires large copper producers to pay more taxes and royalties to the government.

"Chile's new mining royalty law will not materially weaken the competitiveness of the country's copper mining sector, but it will increase taxes, modestly pressuring miners' cash flows," Fitch said in a report.

Global mining companies such as BHP (BHP.AX), Anglo American (AAL.L) and Glencore (GLEN.L) are among those whose cash flows will be strained by the reform, Fitch said.

Several large globally diversified industry players "have made substantial capex (capital expenditure) commitments following the royalty finalization, suggesting mining economics remain competitive globally under the new tax regime," it added.

The new tax regime is taking effect gradually, since several operations maintain previously signed tax invariability contracts.

However, Fitch noted that "difficulties related to obtaining environmental permits will likely lead to a period in 2024 where no new projects come online, after the completion of (Teck Resources') Quebrada Blanca this year."

TORONTO, Aug. 2, 2023 /CNW/ - (TSX: LUN); (Nasdaq Stockholm: LUMI) Lundin Mining Corporation ("Lundin Mining" or the "Company") today announced that its Board of Directors has declared a regular quarterly dividend of Canadian Dollars ("CAD") $0.09 per share, payable on September 13, 2023, to shareholders of record at the close of business on September 1, 2023. This dividend qualifies as an 'eligible dividend' for Canadian income tax purposes. The declaration, timing, amount and payment of future dividends remain at the discretion of the Board of Directors.
Dividends on shares traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange ("TSX") will be paid in CAD on September 13, 2023. Dividends on shares traded on Nasdaq Stockholm will be paid in Swedish kronor in accordance with Euroclear principles on September 18, 2023. To execute the payment of the dividend, a temporary administrative cross-border transfer closure will be applied by Euroclear from August 30, 2023 up to and including September 1, 2023 during which period shares of the Company cannot be transferred between TSX and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Chile fines Lundin mine for environmental infractions

SANTIAGO, Aug 1 (Reuters) - Chile's environmental regulator said Tuesday it had fined Lundin's (LUN.TO) Caserones copper mine the equivalent of $9 million for serious water-use violations.

The Superintendency of the Environment (SMA) said that non-compliance affected the quality of surface water and groundwater in the Ramadillas River basin. The SMA said it carried out multiple inspections between 2015 and 2018 after citizen complaints from Colla indigenous communities.

"After an extensive analysis, the SMA concluded in the sanction of two infractions to the RCA of the project, both classified as serious," he added.

Lundin can file an appeal to the SMA within five business days or file a claim to the first environmental court within 15 business days.

At the end of March, Lundin (LUN.TO) signed an agreement with JX Nippon Mining & Metals for 51% of Lumina Copper, which owns Caserones, for $950 million. JX is a unit of Japanese oil and metals giant Eneos Holdings (5020.T).

Caserones said it had produced about 125,000 tons of copper in 2022.
