STEM, ASTM spike higher

Expectations that the U.S. government plans to withdraw a ban on federally-funded research using human embryotic cells is sparking a run-up in the shares of StemCells (STEM: news, msgs), Aastrom Biosciences (ASTM: news, msgs) and Geron Corp. (GERN: news, msgs). The National Institute of Health released new guidelines this morning that permit removal of the ban. Aastrom is soaring 1 1/16, or 68 percent, to 2 5/8 on heavy volume of 6.56 million shares, while StemCells is jumping 2 1/4, or 41.9 percent, to 7 5/8, with 4.32 million shares changing hands. Geron`s gains were a bit more modest, rising 7/8, or 3.6 percent, to 25 1/4. Aastrom CFO Todd Simpson attributed the run-up in his company`s shares to the news but noted that Aastrom doesn`t use embryonic cells in its research. "It puts attention on the sector, which is good for the stock," Simpson said.
