Sell Citrix Systems
I think Citrix Systems (CTXS, news, msgs) will be back -- but the company faces some nasty earnings comparisons over the next two quarters. Analysts are projecting earnings declines of 26% and 17% for the September and December quarters, respectively. I think it’s likely that the stock will need both those quarters to build a base for a recovery much above $25 a share, and the stock will certainly face tax-loss selling beginning in October. In the meantime, I’m going to sell and put my money to work elsewhere. Investors who can do a better job of timing than I can in this column might want to see if they can sell on a post-Labor Day bounce closer to $23. I have a 54% loss since I made this stock a Jubak’s Picks in November 1999. (Full disclosure: Following the rules of Jubak’s Journal, I will be selling my personal shares of Citrix Systems three days after this column is posted.)

CTXS ist wieder auf dem Weg nach Norden.

Bis jetzt haben Sie bei jeder Marktbewegung einen schönen Satz nach oben gemacht.

Fundamental ist die Comp. die Technik stimmt und die Zahlen werden auch wieder stimmen, wenn das neue Lizenzierungsverfahren greift.

Technisch ist mit der Citrix SW so viel möglich, aber das müssen sie erst einmal auf die Straße bringen. Der Markt für ASP soll auch nach der Gartner Group explosiv wachsen, da wird sich CTXS doch wohl ein Stückchen vom Kuchen sichern können.

Citrix Systems Reports Results for Third Quarter 2000
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Citrix Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: CTXS - news) today reported results for the third quarter ended September 30, 2000.

FINANCIAL RESULTS

Net revenues for the third quarter ending September 30, 2000, were $113.5 million, up 7% from $105.8 million in the comparable period of the prior year. Net income, excluding the amortization of intangible assets and write-off of in-process research and development relating to business combinations, was $27.5 million for the third quarter, or $0.14 per share, as compared to $34.2 million, or $0.18 per share, for the third quarter of 1999. Net income including amortization of intangible assets and write-off of in- process research and development relating to business combinations was $21.6 million for the third quarter of 2000, or $0.11 per share, as compared with net income of $29.3 million, or $0.15 per share, for the third quarter of 1999.

Net revenues for the first nine months of fiscal 2000 were $347.1 million, compared to $285.2 million in the same period last year. Net income for the first nine months of fiscal 2000, excluding the amortization of intangible assets and write-off of in-process research and development relating to business combinations, was $92.2 million, or $0.46 per share, as compared to $92.5 million, or $0.49 per share, for the same period last year. Net income for the first nine months of fiscal 2000, including the amortization of intangible assets and write-off of in-process research and development relating to business combinations, was $75.1 million, or $0.37 per share, as compared to $82.9 million, or $0.44 per share, for the same period last year.

Werdet mal nicht zu euphorisch, z.Zt. ist wieder sehr viel Phanatasie eingepreist. Ich freu mich natürlich auch über jedes Prozent, ziehe aber einen (virtuellen) Stop-Loss immer mit hoch.

Meine Vermutung für den Anstieg ist, dass Microsoft viele WIN2000-Lizenzen verkauft, was automatisch auch ein gutes Geschäft für Citrix bringen sollte. Zum einen wegen der nötigen Updates für Metaframe, zum anderen wg. der erhöhten Aufmerksamkeit der Kunden/Administratoren wg. dem in WIN2000 integrierten (Schmalhans-Testmuster) Terminalserver. Darüber hinaus sollte Microsofts .net-Initiative positive Effekte für Citrix bringen.

Citrix beliefert bereits alle Fortune100-Firmen in den USA. Lt. Aussage eines Citrix-Vorstandes ist aber die Durchdringung in diesen Firmen relativ mau (er sagte irgendwas von "1 inch deep and 1 mile wide" o.ä.).

ich sehe keine überhöhte Phantasie. Der Chartverlauf der letzten
Wochen, in einem sehr unruhigen Markt, spricht Bände, das sieht eher
nach Kaufprogrammen aus.

ASP ist auch erst am Anfang, die Marktaussichten sind enorm und CTXS
wird früher oder später übernommen.
Aber prinzipiell ist stoploss nie schlecht.

Du phantasierst doch ebenfalls (nicht böse gemeint), wenn du sagst, Citrix sei früher oder später ein Übernahmekandidat. Der Chart sieht wirklich super aus, und Citrix ist wieder zu meiner grössten Position angewachsen. Ich war aber schon einmal mit 300% im Plus, und das war die wirklich teure Stop-Loss-Lektion. Die Euphorie hat mich seinerzeit das ganze durch die rosarote Brille sehen lassen. Das passiert mir (so zumindest mein Vorsatz) nicht mehr.

Betrachtet man lediglich die MOMENTANEN (und quasi nicht vorh.) Wachsumsraten, und die rückläufigen Gewinne, ist CTXS teuer (und damit m.E. mit Phantasie gefüllt). Meinerseits kann ich diese Phantasie gut ausfüllen, man denke nur an die nicht die Erwartungen erfüllenden UMTS/G3 Bandbreiten, und die ganzen Inet-Appliances (Stichwort: Symbian und Palm). Und Citrix` Technik ist u.a. auf Bandbreitenprobleme fokusiert.

Zu ASP: Ich habe das Interview mit Templeton wieder gefunden,

ihr findet dort auch die Aussage mit der Firmendurchdringung.

Und eine vielleicht manchen enttäuschende Prognose zu den ASP-Einnahmen:

Und dann ziehe in deine Betrachtungen noch ein, dass es ein Patentstreit mit Graphon gibt.

Ich teile eure Freude!

@ tschernobyl: Die gewinne sind nicht rückläufig, es wurde lediglich das Lizensierungsverfahren geändert, was zu einer zeitlichen Verschiebung führt. Das neue Verfahren ist für Großkunden angenehmer und leichter, andere wie z.B. ORCL haben das auch schon hinter sich.

Deshalb bin ich sehr gespannt auf die nächsten beiden Quartale, die Wahl eines neuen CEOs sollte auch einen zusätzlichen Schub bedeuten!
Ansonsten wünsche ich uns weiterhin so viel Spaß gemeinsam mit CTXS.

CTXS hat ein 2001-KGV von 35, wenn Du das als teuer für einen Software
Hersteller ansiehst, bitte. Wenn Dir ansiehst, daß New economy companies zum Großteil durch Übernahmen Marktanteile erstreiten, dann wirst Du erkennen, daß CTXS als Alleinstehender keine Chance hat, sich einer Übernahme eines BigPlayers (HP, IBM, MSFT, Sun) zu erwehren. Das ist keine Phantasie, sondern Fakt. MSFT kauft pro Jahr im Schnitt 18 Firmem, SUN 14.
Mal ganz davon abgesehen, daß ein Aktienkurs eigentlich nur durch `Phantasie` steigt.

Aber was mich interessieren würde: Was bitte hat `Palm` oder `UMTS` oder auch `G3` mit Citrix/ASP zu tun? Also ich kenne nur G7...

Keith, woher hast du das 2001er KGV von 35? Ich habe nicht grossartig recherchiert, aber ich lese auf der Nasdaq-Seite ein KGV von 55 (ohne zu wissen, für welches Jahr das gilt). In der Spitze waren es mal knapp 200, also noch viel Luft. Soweit wirds aber nicht mehr kommen, wage ich zu behaupten.

Zu der Übernahme: Die Situation Microsofts im Monopoly-Prozess ist hinreichend bekannt. Ich kann mir nicht vorstellen, dass Microsoft Citrix kaufen könnte, ohne mit den Kartellbehörden Schwierigkeiten zu bekommen. Andererseits würde Microsoft eine Übernahme durch Sun (oder andere ernsthafte MS-Konkurrenten) nie und nimmer zulassen, und als "weisser Ritter" auftreten. Die Rolle der Citrix-Technologie in der .net-Strategie Microsofts ist dafür zu wichtig, weil sie sich jetzt wohl endgültig von Java verabschiedet haben (ohne die Idee je unterstützt zu haben).

G3 (sorry für diese Ausdrücke, ich hasse sie auch) bedeutet soviel wie Generation 3 bei der Mobilfunktechnik, hier UMTS. G2 war dieser Qualcomm-Standard (GSM???, bin mir nicht sicher). Mit G7 hat das ganze aber nur wenig zu tun ;-)

Zu dem wichtigen: Palm und Symbian haben das ICA-Protokoll von Citrix ins jeweilige Betriebssystem integriert. Links habe ich gerade nicht zur Hand, aber mit einer Suchmaschine wirst du es leicht finden. Vermutlich sogar auf der Citrix-Homepage. Das öffnet Citrix die Tür zu mobilen Anwendungen, insbesondere dann, wenn die Bandbreiten im mobilen Inet nicht so hoch sind wie erwartet. ICA ist ein Bandbreitensparer! Ferner hat die Thin-Client-Technologie auch dahingehend Vorteile, dass durch Einsparung von Rechenleistung auf dem Endgerät auch gleichzeitig Strom gespart wird. Das zu meinen Phantasien, die mittlerweile aber auf ziemlich dünnen Beinen stehen. Die Welt will Java.

nun gut, ehrlich gesagt bin ich zu faul alle details hier rein zu schreiben, kurz: Der ASP-Markt beginnt erst, daher auch die Aussage, daß CTXS sehr breit bei Kunden, aber noch nicht sehr tief ist. Alle großen Player versuchen seit ca. 1 Jahr ins ASP Geschäft zu kommen und drängen mit wirklicher Macht und sehr viel Geld herein. CTXS ist Tech-Träger mit fetten Marketshares und ALLEINSTEHEND. Weiterhin ist das Unternhemen günstig und ohne CEO.

Ich bin mir sehr sicher, daß CTXS, vielleicht erst in 2002 von einer 40 Mrd. Company wie z.B. HP oder IBM oder wasweißich gekauft wird, die Marktsituation schreit förmlich danach, ich interessiere mich gar nicht dafür wer CTXS kaufen will, sondern nur dafür, daß CTXS übernommen werden wird.

Übrigens: Auf der Systems hat ein Schweizer Systemhaus den Auftrag erhalten MSFT Europaweit mit ASP auszurüsten, Server: Compaq - Thin: Citrix

Metaframe/ASP wird die IT-Lösung der nächsten 5 Jahre und die wenigsten Hersteller sind bereit für diesen Markt bereit, weil sie alle nur PC / Internet / Netzwerk gedacht haben.

Wir haben einen CTXS-EK von 18 und wir geben sie nicht mehr her.

Die Technik ist klasse (wir verkaufen Metaframe) und die Nachfrage groß

Dain Rauscher Wessels analyst Sarah Mattson said the four days of gains may be Wall Street`s applause for increased visibility into the company`s "strategic direction."

"The bottom line - this is a reflection of a better understanding of what`s driving Citrix`s business," said Mattson, adding that institutions may now have a firm grasp of the company`s operational and marketing plans.

Market watchers believe business should pick up in the next year for the computer-network products provider whose MetaFrame product runs on Windows 2000 and Windows NT.

The general belief is that as companies begin to adopt Microsoft Corp.`s (MSFT, news, msgs) newest operating system, Citrix Systems` sales will also get a boost.

This idea was partly behind Lehman Brothers Inc.`s upgrade of its rating on Citrix Systems to "buy" from "neutral" earlier this month. Lehman noted that Citrix should benefit from customers` adoption of Windows 2000.

In the near term, Mattson also sees growth for Citrix. In a Nov. 10 research note, she noted that the fourth quarter is "shaping up well," and forecast revenue of $121.2 million and earnings of 15 cents a share.

A consensus of nine analysts also expects the company to earn 15 cents a share in the fourth quarter.

After a disappointing second quarter, wrote Mattson, the company seems to have steady growth going forward. She added that the stock should "move higher as we approach 2001."

The analyst maintains an aggressive buy rating on Citrix Systems and a 12-month price target of $40.

Alle großen Anbieter (IBM,SUN,HP) wollen mit dem -Ebusiness- Kohle machen und das geht nur mit portablen thin clients, ein Laptop ist dafür meistens schon überdimensioniert. die devices der zukunft sind hierfür handys, palms etc. und diese werden vielleicht mit MS CE oder ähnlichem laufen, hoffentlich nicht mit MS ;-)), aber eine architektur wie sie CTXS anbietet ist für so etwas ideal und alle der genannten big boys haben keine technologie für ihr E-Programm CTXS hat sie. Und das wissen die genannten drei.

Ich erwarte im nächsten Jahr weitergehende Partnerschaften mit den big player und ich erwarte einen benefit von der zunehmenden breitband fähigkeit der mobilen netze.

Aber sie brauchen jetzt langsam mal einen CEO, der die Strategie bestimmt, damit diese möglichen Entwicklungen angepackt werden!!!! Wenn sie einen renommierten CEO erwischen, dann geht die Reise erst richtig los. Mit uns natürlich!!!
