(4,5 Mio) Gewinn hatten. Marktkap. 2,2 Mrd. Unterbewertet oder nicht ?

(Adds company`s capital spending plan and analysts` comments)
By Risa Maeda
TOKYO, Nov 27 (Reuters) - Japan`s top optical-fibre cable maker Furukawa Electric Co Ltd said on Monday its group net profit for the past half year hit a record, soaring nearly 10-fold on robust sales of optical and electronics products.
Analysts said the rosy half-year results were Furukawa`s reward for a gradual shift into new technology in recent years. Nearly half of its sales now stem from products launched in the past five years.
Furukawa <5801.T>, a darling of foreign investors, raised its full-year sales estimate for optical-fibre products by 18 percent from its previous forecast to 218 billion yen ($1.96 billion). Of that, it expected sales of key systems that move data further and faster to rise 25 percent to 88 billion yen.
The growth forecast for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical-fibre systems comes despite fears of a slowdown in the optical-fibre industry triggered by disappointing sales results from Canada`s Nortel Networks Corp <NT.TO> <NT.N>, which is a customer of Furukawa.
Yasuo Sakuma, senior fund manager at Dai-Ichi Kangyo Asset Management, said growth in the global optical-fibre market may have hit a peak this calendar year given an expected fall in capital spending by global telecoms carriers.
"Operating profits among (optical-fibre) parts makers are likely to grow in the next business year, but the growth rate may not match (investors`) expectations," he said.
But Furukawa said it would boost capital spending to 72 billion yen for the year to next March, up 129 percent from last year, mainly for its optical-fibre product lines.
Furukawa is racing to catch up with world leaders in the optical-fibre technology market such as Nortel, Lucent Technologies Inc <LU.N>, Corning Inc <GLW.N> and JDS Uniphase Corp <JDU.TO> <JDSU.O>.
"Furukawa`s current strategy of focusing more on products with higher profit margins is likely to offset an expected rise in depreciation costs," said Shima Nakao, an analyst at Tsubasa Research Institute.
SHRUGS OFF WORRIES
Shiro Okuda, Furukawa Electric`s senior managing director, shrugged off concerns, saying demand for downstream products in the optical-fibre industry remains strong.
"We are aware of the fears...but demand for equipment is still buoyant both in the United States and Europe," Okuda said.
The company is preparing a medium-term business plan for as early as February to include its sales outlook for WDM-related products for the next business year, he said.
Consolidated net profit for the April-September period surged 881 percent to 108.87 billion yen, or 167.40 yen per share, up from 11.09 billion yen or 17.1 yen per share a year earlier.
Net profit came slightly above the company`s October forecast for the six months of 106 billion yen, and it raised an estimated group net profit for the full year to 155 billion yen from October`s forecast of 151 billion yen.
The upward revision was partly due to latent profit from an initial public offering (IPO) in early November by U.S.-based telecoms equipment maker Optical Communications Products Inc <OCPI.O>, in which Furukawa owns a 63 percent stake.
A special profit of 197.5 billion yen from sales of share in JDS Uniphase, in which Furukawa now has a 14 percent stake, also contributed to the results.
SHARE IS FOREIGNER DARLING
Shares in Furukawa, which also produces aluminium and other non-ferrous metal products, ended at 2,840 yen, up 11.81 percent on the day and 89 percent higher than at the start of the year.
Furukawa has been a favourite buy among foreign investors. Some 36 percent of its shares were held by foreigners as of the end of September, up from 21.8 percent a year earlier.
The shares hit a record intraday high of 3,710 yen on October 23, a week after it revised up its results forecast for the half year and the full year, but then came under pressure after oversupply concerns arose in the global optical-fibre industry.

$. Das für 2001 prognostizierte
Gewinnwachstum pro Aktie betrage 28 % auf 0,32 $.
