Die West LB Panmure hat Helkon in ihre Beobachtung aufgenommen. In einer Studie der deutschen Filmverleiher schneidet HE gut ab. Urteil "Buy". "ein Top Pick für Investoren, die an den Erfolg des Weltvertriebsaufbaus eines jungen deutschen Rechtehändlers glauben". Kursziel: erst einmal 7,7 Euro.
Chance und Risiko zugleich ist für die West LB, dass Helkon seine Filme zum größten Teil selbst auswertet.

In diesem Zusammenhang möchte ich nocheinmal an diese, offenbar etwas in Vergessenheit geratene Meldung aus dem letzten Jahr erinnern:

Producer JOSEPH SINGER nabs foreign funding
In the latest case of offshore infiltration of Hollywood, producer Joseph Singer has been staked
with $350 million in production funds plus $15.5 million in development money by German-based
Helkon Media AG, Spain-based Telecinco, Italy-based Eagle Pictures and the Latin
America-based Nu Vision.
Singer is working with those partners to close a deal with a studio that will provide 35% of the
budget for domestic distribution rights. The combined investment will be $500 million to fund 10
films over five years, each costing between $30 million and $80 million.
Singer is coming off a three-year term deal at Universal. In the last few years, he`s had
producing credits on six films: ``Dante`s Peak,`` ``Daylight,`` ``Courage Under Fire,`` ``Dudley
Do-Right,`` ``Mercury Rising`` and ``Doctor Dolittle.`` Not all were domestic hits, but each had
stars with foreign bankability, and the films had a combined worldwide theatrical revenue of $900
million. The financiers are gambling that Singer`s talent relationships will lead them to star-driven
pics.
The new financing pact was put together by Joe Drake, president of Lions Gate Films Intl.,
which will retain a small portion of equity ownership on the film titles.
``The idea behind this venture is to deliver true A-movies to our international partners,`` said
Singer. ``It`s a great opportunity for me as a producer. At a studio, you deal with the
bureaucracy and a long, drawn-out approval system. Here, there`s autonomy and a real
opportunity for ownership in the movies.
``It`s also a lot of responsibility because, whether it`s been Wall Street or the Japanese, a lot of
investors have been left feeling ripped-off in Hollywood, and my partners are well aware of that
history. I`ll try to balance good creative decisions with sound financial strategy so they can
make money.``
Helkon Media AG gets Germany and most of the world, putting up most of the foreign funds.
The German production and distribution company, which is flush with cash from a German
public offering, adds Singer to an expanding producer roster of Chuck Roven (``12 Monkeys``)
and Warren Zide and Craig Perry (``American Pie``). Helkon president Werner Koenig said he
made the deal because he felt Singer would complement the other producers to serve Helkon`s
expansion strategy.
``Chuck does mainstream, intelligent action films, Zide and Perry service the teenage market,
and Joe is really good at high-concept, star-driven films,`` said Koenig, who said he`ll finance
about two-thirds of the 65% being invested by the foreign partners in each film. ``I am trying to
collect one or two more producers, maybe one with a specialization in romantic comedies, to
bring forward a slate of films for a global basis.``
Koenig is aware that some in Hollywood might consider the Germans to be the latest in a long
line of suckers who are welcomed with great fanfare and leave with empty pockets. The
difference, he feels, is an opportunity that didn`t exist before. The marketplace has changed,
with studios more reluctant than ever to self-finance big films.
``For German companies, this is a unique moment in time to gain equity,`` said Koenig. ``And
we are willing to share on a more fair basis with our producers than studios do.``
Though Singer`s deal allows him to invest in films without partner approvals, and enables him to
pay gross from source, and residuals, Singer said he`ll rely on Koenig and the other partners to
choose films, as well as the yet-to-be named Hollywood studio partner. ``We`re negotiating for
10 guaranteed distribution slots, but we want the U.S. studio to want to make these movies as
badly as we do,`` said Singer.
As for Koenig, he cautions that Singer hasn`t been given a blank check.
``He`s got freedom but also responsibility,`` said Koenig. ``If Joe comes out with two bombs, it
won`t be the same deal. But there`s no gun to his head. We want him to make good star-driven
films. I know that many foreigners have lost money in the past. I hope that Hollywood is
sophisticated enough to realize that if they burn the Germans now, it will be much harder for
them in the future. It`ll be better if they work to our mutual benefit. What I`ve tried to do is find
people like Chuck, Joe and Warren, who I trust. I don`t trust many people in Hollywood.``
