bleibt spannend

Financial-Sector Woes
Spur Treasurys
By DEBORAH LYNN BLUMBERG
September 11, 2008 9:27 a.m.
Fears about the health of the financial sector lifted Treasurys prices across the curve Thursday as nervous investors sought comfort in government debt.
Specifically, investors were on edge about Lehman Brothers Holdings after its preliminary earnings announcement Wednesday pointed to steep losses. Lehman shares tumbled Thursday in pre-market trade.
Shares of brokerage Merrill Lynch & Co. also fell in pre-market trading, and Washington Mutual Inc. continued to drop to lows not seen in 18 years.
"Markets are extraordinarily concerned about the banking system," said T.J. Marta, fixed income strategist at RBC Capital Markets in New York.
The gains were the most pronounced in the front-end of the curve, and namely in the five-year sector. The market has benefitted the last several days on rising concerns about the financial system, taking bond yields back toward the levels hit before the government takeover of mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac this past weekend.
In recent trade, the two-year note was up 5/32 at 2.14%. It had shot as high as 2.53% in the wake of the GSE news. The 10-year note was 14/32 higher, yielding 3.59%, versus its post-GSE high of 3.86%.
Treasurys benchmark yield curve -- the spread between the two- and 10-year notes -- steepened at plus 145 basis points in recent trade from plus 143 basis points on Thursday afternoon.
Meantime, rate-cut speculation was intensifying in fed-funds futures. The November contract was showing 26% odds for the Federal Reserve to lower the funds rate by 25 basis points at its end-October meeting. That's up from about an 8% chance at Wednesday's settlement. As recently as Monday, the market was still pricing in a slight chance of a rate hike.
Ian Lyngen, interest-rate strategist at RBS Greenwich Capital in Greenwich, Conn., said the overarching bullish factors for the bond market are troubled financials, the potential for more writedowns, falling energy and equity prices, and fears of a global recession. He sees "little reason to expect this to fade in coming weeks."
That said though, the market will have to digest $12 billion in 10-year notes Thursday afternoon, and longer-term Treasurys could weaken ahead of that.
Meantime Thursday, the data overall were also bond friendly. Weekly jobless claims slipped but the four-week moving average of claims, which aims to smooth volatility in the data, edged upward and remains at a level typically associated with recessions. The U.S. trade deficit swelled in July to its widest gap in 16 months as oil prices surged. The U.S. deficit in international trade of goods and services increased by 5.7% to $62.20 billion from June's revised $58.84 billion, the Commerce Department said.
Import prices also posted a record decline in August, tumbling 3.7% on a monthly basis, after a 0.2% increase in July that was revised down sharply from the prior estimate of a 1.7% rise.
"From here, we are keeping an eye on the downtrade in stocks," said Mr. Lyngen, "and are still wary of a concession ahead of this afternoon's $12 billion in 10-year supply."
The 10-year gained 14/32 at 103 13/32 at 3.59%. The 30-year added 20/32 at 105 8/32 at 4.19%. Yields move inversely to prices. The five-year was up 11/32 at 101 10/32 at 2.84%, while the two-year was up 5/32 at 100 14/32 at 2.14%
