Global revolution as TV learns to interact

Interactive TV: the global picture
Surprisingly it is not the United States - birthplace of the game show and home shopping - leading the interactive television (itv) revolution.

The single-minded focus of the US market on high definition TV has made the United Kingdom itv`s pioneer - and penetration to date is impressive. Up to 13 million households in the UK will have itv by 2004 - roughly 64% of the population.

That translates to a UK spend of £2.6bn on TV retail by the same year - a growth potential made more impressive by the fact that it is only 12 months since introduction (Source: Forrester Research).

BSKYB is currently generating $3m a week in retail sales and in the US Forrester Research predicts "walled gardens" (dedicated content channels and itv environments) to generate $3.1bn by 2002 - itv is estimated to reach 30 million households in the US and generate $10 billion in sales by 2004 (Source: Jupiter Communications.)

A major factor in the successful UK penetration of itv was government subsidisation via BSKYB of set tops (which enable itv) in every TV-owning household. As Carat Australia buying director James Parkinson points out, such mass subsidisation is both commercially unfeasible and unlikely here.
