Die Firma Given Imaging hat eine Methode entwickelt, mit der der Dünndarm nicht nur vollständig, sondern auch mühelos untersucht werden kann. Das Unternehmen hat eine Kapsel entwickelt, die mit einem Mikrokamera-Chip bestückt ist. Die Kapsel ist so klein, dass sie vom Patienten mühelos geschluckt werden kann.
Bisher entzog sich der größte Teil des Dünndarms den Diagnoseinstrumenten der Mediziner. Auch bei einem teilweisen Einblick mussten Ärzte den Patienten unangenehme Kontrastmittel zumuten, bevor mit Hilfe von Röntgenstrahlen oder Computertomographie Informationen gewonnen werden konnten. Die Mini-Videokamera hingegen durchwandert den ganzen Magen-Darm-Trakt auf natürliche Weise – bevor sie ausgeschieden wird. Given Imaging setze, mit der Kamera in der Kapsel zur Diagnostik des menschlichen Verdauungstraktes, den Siegeszug mit M2A ungebremst fort. Die einzigartige Minikamera, die in einer verdaubaren Kapsel unablässig Bilder vom Weg durch den Verdauungstrakt schieße, habe bereits auf Grund ihrer Vielzahl an Vorteilen gegenüber herkömmlichen diagnostischen Verfahren riesige Erfolge feiern können. Deshalb führe man jährlich bei etwa 1,5 Millionen Amerikanern eine dianostische Untersuchung des Dünndarms durch. Given Imaging würde in einem pessimistischen Szenario immer noch ein Marktpotenzial von rund 700 Mio. US-Dollar pro Jahr versprechen. Ungesunde Essgewohnheiten bei den Amerikanern sei der Grund immer größerer werdender Darmprobleme. Aufgrund dessen dürfte die Nachfrage nach M2A in Zukunft zunehmen und das Unternehmen ein Milliarden Marktpotenzial für die Minikamera erzielen.
Dadurch das fünf große US-Krankenversicherer bereits zugesichert hätten, die Kosten für die Anwendung der Kamerakapsel zu übernehmen werde Geven Imaging Technologie noch schneller zum verdienten Erfolg finden. Die meisten Israelischen Kliniken sowie die Armee hätten kürzlich erst zu der verdaubaren Kamera zugestimmt und sie teilweise schon angewendet. Das Unternehmen habe im 2. , Israel, July 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Given Imaging announced today that the company has received FDA clearance establishing the Given Diagnostic System as a first line tool in the detection of abnormalities of the small bowel, removing the "adjunctive tool" qualifier.
The FDA based its decision on clinical data showing an analysis of 32 independent studies with a total of 691 patients. The analysis compared the Given Diagnostic System with other modalities including gastroscopy, colonoscopy, small bowel follow through (SBFT), push-enteroscopy, CT scan, abdominal x-ray, angiography, and intra-operative enteroscopy. Capsule endoscopy had a diagnostic yield of 71% whereas all the other modalities together had a total diagnostic yield of only 41%.
"When you consider that capsule endoscopy offers superior diagnoses and is a painless procedure, this is really excellent news for patients since they will no longer have to endure multiple inconclusive GI diagnostic procedures," said Dr. Blair Lewis, Professor of Medicine at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York. The first video-equipped ingestible capsule capable of being piloted is about half the size of a grape and has electrodes on its outer surface that deliver a series of 5-milliamp jolts whenever physicians press a remote control. The charge triggers a small muscle spasm in the intestine, which nudges the capsule forward or backward. Previous incarnations simply went where the body took them. Capsule takes fantastic voyage

Howard Popper began suffering bouts of gastrointestinal bleeding when he was 40.
Some of the episodes were serious enough to land the Morristown, N.J., attorney in the intensive-care unit. For five years, conventional tests found only a mild inflammation of the stomach.
But Popper had an uneasy feeling that something else was wrong. Eventually he made his way to Blair Lewis, a gastroenterologist at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. Lewis suspected that Popper had a cancer that standard tests couldn`t find.
Lewis gave Popper two options. One was exploratory surgery. The other was a revolutionary new device Lewis was testing, a pill with a tiny camera that snaps pictures as it glides through the digestive system.
"I said, `Whoa! Stop right there! I`ll opt for the pill."
Popper became one of a handful of patients in the USA who have swallowed the experimental gizmo. The miniature camera-in-a-pill snapped a color photo of a cancer growing in Popper`s small intestine. Popper had the tumor removed about a month ago. It was a slow-growing tumor, one that could have killed him if it hadn`t been removed.
"I believe it saved my life," the 45-year-old Popper says about the capsule.
Thousands of men and women in the USA have a cancer growing insidiously in their digestive system. Standard tests in which a doctor snakes a long, flexible tube called an endoscope into the intestines will find many of those growths. But many Americans shun those unpleasant exams. Even when they are performed, the scopes don`t reach into every nook and cranny of the gastrointestinal tract.
Given Imaging Ltd., an Israeli company with North American headquarters in Norcross, Ga., developed the camera-in-a-pill. It`s just one company hoping to develop a better way of imaging the human gut. Others are working on computer software programs that turn X-ray images into a virtual journey through a patient`s large intestine or colon.
Such technology could revolutionize the way doctors find and treat cancers and other abnormalities of the gut. So far, however, the new technology is far from perfect. But experts say such devices do hold the promise of a painless way of examining the gastrointestinal tract, one that may be available within the next five years.
Such devices could save the lives of more than 50,000 Americans who die each year of cancers of the small and large intestines. Most of those cancers could be prevented — if doctors could find and remove warty growths called polyps that grow in the digestive tract.
"Polyps are like the seeds of cancer," says Thomas Lamont, a gastroenterologist at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. "If we could get rid of all polyps, we could get rid of colon cancer," he says.
That public health goal represents a huge market for companies working on this issue. They`re hoping to replace the more than 8 million endoscopic exams performed in the USA each year.
Virtual colonoscopy
First consider a technology being developed by a number of companies, including Viatronix Inc. of Stony Brook, N.Y. In a standard endoscopic exam of the colon, the doctor pushes a scope into the 5-foot-long large intestine. That exam can take 30 minutes or longer. With a virtual colonoscopy, the patient goes in for a computerized tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen. In minutes, the scanner collects images of the colon and the patient goes home.
A computer software program takes those CT images and turns them into a three-dimensional view of the colon. Just as a video game player travels through a virtual hallway looking for bad guys, the doctor journeys through the patient`s virtual colon looking for polyps or cancers, says Arie Kaufman, a computer scientist at the State University of New York-Stony Brook and one developer of the Viatronix system.
The painless virtual colonoscopy hasn`t completely taken away the cringe factor: Patients have to insert a 2-inch tube into the rectum to inflate the colon with a gas, a brief step that gives the doctor a clear view of the colon walls.
But the virtual colonoscopies, including the Viatronix model, haven`t been tested enough to recommend their use over a standard endoscopic exam, says Robert Smith, the director of cancer screening at the American Cancer Society in Atlanta. One worry is that the virtual system may miss a polyp or cancer that would have shown up on a standard endoscopic exam, he says.
A magic pill
Given Imaging has taken a more futuristic approach to view the digestive tract. The camera-in-a-pill that Popper swallowed snaps about two pictures per second as it travels from the patient`s mouth, through the stomach, into the 20-foot-long small intestine.
The device is an engineering marvel: It`s the size of an antibiotic with a clear dome that allows the camera a view of the interior walls of the small intestine. The natural muscular waves of the digestive tract propel it forward.
Researchers have been testing this camera-in-a-pill on humans and on animals. So far, the results have been good enough to consider seeking FDA approval sometime this year, says Lewis of Mount Sinai. That approval, if it comes, will be based on studies like the one published in the December issue of Gastroenterology.
That study of nine dogs showed that the capsule could outperform the standard scope investigation of the small intestine. The dogs didn`t have polyps, so researchers Mark Appleyard and Paul Swain of the Royal London Hospital sewed small beads at various places in each dog`s small intestine. They found that the capsule identified more beads, mostly by finding beads in sections the scope can`t reach, Swain says.
Human studies of the capsule are still underway. Appleyard and Swain have tested the pill in 13 people, including four people whose cases are described in Thursday`s New England Journal of Medicine.
In that brief report, the team found that three of the four had abnormal collections of blood vessels in parts of the small intestine that had remained out of view with a scope exam. These abnormal blood vessels represent another disorder of the small intestine, Appleyard says.
Lewis has yet to publish his results on 11 people. He says that the camera-in-a-pill finds everything that the standard scope exams find, and more — like Popper`s tumor.
The pill has one big advantage over other methods: It`s as easy as swallowing an aspirin.
To find out what it was like, Swain himself swallowed a capsule. "It was completely painless," he says. That voyage through Swain`s small intestine revealed no polyps or other problems, he says.
But the capsule faces some hurdles. For one, the device runs on an eight-hour battery, not enough juice to take pictures of the entire gastrointestinal tract.
Critics say this device will never be retooled to work in the large intestine, where most cancers occur.
"I`m dubious about the technology," says Bernard Levin, a cancer prevention expert at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Levin fears the capsule will begin tumbling in the colon, which is much wider than the small intestine. That tumbling will prevent clear shots of the colon wall, he says.
Lewis says that he was pretty skeptical about the capsule`s ability to take clear shots even in the small intestine. "I was a naysayer," he says. But once he started using the device, he changed his mind.
"The view is just spectacular," he says of the capsule`s passage through the small intestine. Lewis and others acknowledge that changes will have to be made if the capsule is to work in the colon.
Motorized version
Researchers are working on equipping the capsule with a tiny motor, one that could power its trip through the large intestine.
Right now, the capsule is capable only of moving passively through the digestive tract. It can`t back up or zoom in on a trouble spot. But a motorized capsule would function more like a miniature submarine, one that could move right up to a polyp, open a port and use a tiny blade to remove it, Lamont envisions. Or it could seal off abnormal blood vessels with a small laser.
For now, the dream of a motorized capsule is just that. The capsule as it exists today may help some patients — people such as Popper who have a tumor or other abnormality in the small intestine. But Popper for one is very glad that he tried the experimental device.
If he hadn`t, "I`d be out there in the world with a tumor in my gut just waiting to spread."

Capsule takes fantastic voyage

Howard Popper began suffering bouts of gastrointestinal bleeding when he was 40.
Some of the episodes were serious enough to land the Morristown, N.J., attorney in the intensive-care unit. For five years, conventional tests found only a mild inflammation of the stomach.
But Popper had an uneasy feeling that something else was wrong. Eventually he made his way to Blair Lewis, a gastroenterologist at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. Lewis suspected that Popper had a cancer that standard tests couldn`t find.
Lewis gave Popper two options. One was exploratory surgery. The other was a revolutionary new device Lewis was testing, a pill with a tiny camera that snaps pictures as it glides through the digestive system.
"I said, `Whoa! Stop right there! I`ll opt for the pill."
Popper became one of a handful of patients in the USA who have swallowed the experimental gizmo. The miniature camera-in-a-pill snapped a color photo of a cancer growing in Popper`s small intestine. Popper had the tumor removed about a month ago. It was a slow-growing tumor, one that could have killed him if it hadn`t been removed.
"I believe it saved my life," the 45-year-old Popper says about the capsule.
Thousands of men and women in the USA have a cancer growing insidiously in their digestive system. Standard tests in which a doctor snakes a long, flexible tube called an endoscope into the intestines will find many of those growths. But many Americans shun those unpleasant exams. Even when they are performed, the scopes don`t reach into every nook and cranny of the gastrointestinal tract.
Given Imaging Ltd., an Israeli company with North American headquarters in Norcross, Ga., developed the camera-in-a-pill. It`s just one company hoping to develop a better way of imaging the human gut. Others are working on computer software programs that turn X-ray images into a virtual journey through a patient`s large intestine or colon.
Such technology could revolutionize the way doctors find and treat cancers and other abnormalities of the gut. So far, however, the new technology is far from perfect. But experts say such devices do hold the promise of a painless way of examining the gastrointestinal tract, one that may be available within the next five years.
Such devices could save the lives of more than 50,000 Americans who die each year of cancers of the small and large intestines. Most of those cancers could be prevented — if doctors could find and remove warty growths called polyps that grow in the digestive tract.
"Polyps are like the seeds of cancer," says Thomas Lamont, a gastroenterologist at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. "If we could get rid of all polyps, we could get rid of colon cancer," he says.
That public health goal represents a huge market for companies working on this issue. They`re hoping to replace the more than 8 million endoscopic exams performed in the USA each year.
Virtual colonoscopy
First consider a technology being developed by a number of companies, including Viatronix Inc. of Stony Brook, N.Y. In a standard endoscopic exam of the colon, the doctor pushes a scope into the 5-foot-long large intestine. That exam can take 30 minutes or longer. With a virtual colonoscopy, the patient goes in for a computerized tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen. In minutes, the scanner collects images of the colon and the patient goes home.
A computer software program takes those CT images and turns them into a three-dimensional view of the colon. Just as a video game player travels through a virtual hallway looking for bad guys, the doctor journeys through the patient`s virtual colon looking for polyps or cancers, says Arie Kaufman, a computer scientist at the State University of New York-Stony Brook and one developer of the Viatronix system.
The painless virtual colonoscopy hasn`t completely taken away the cringe factor: Patients have to insert a 2-inch tube into the rectum to inflate the colon with a gas, a brief step that gives the doctor a clear view of the colon walls.
But the virtual colonoscopies, including the Viatronix model, haven`t been tested enough to recommend their use over a standard endoscopic exam, says Robert Smith, the director of cancer screening at the American Cancer Society in Atlanta. One worry is that the virtual system may miss a polyp or cancer that would have shown up on a standard endoscopic exam, he says.
A magic pill
Given Imaging has taken a more futuristic approach to view the digestive tract. The camera-in-a-pill that Popper swallowed snaps about two pictures per second as it travels from the patient`s mouth, through the stomach, into the 20-foot-long small intestine.
The device is an engineering marvel: It`s the size of an antibiotic with a clear dome that allows the camera a view of the interior walls of the small intestine. The natural muscular waves of the digestive tract propel it forward.
Researchers have been testing this camera-in-a-pill on humans and on animals. So far, the results have been good enough to consider seeking FDA approval sometime this year, says Lewis of Mount Sinai. That approval, if it comes, will be based on studies like the one published in the December issue of Gastroenterology.
That study of nine dogs showed that the capsule could outperform the standard scope investigation of the small intestine. The dogs didn`t have polyps, so researchers Mark Appleyard and Paul Swain of the Royal London Hospital sewed small beads at various places in each dog`s small intestine. They found that the capsule identified more beads, mostly by finding beads in sections the scope can`t reach, Swain says.
Human studies of the capsule are still underway. Appleyard and Swain have tested the pill in 13 people, including four people whose cases are described in Thursday`s New England Journal of Medicine.
In that brief report, the team found that three of the four had abnormal collections of blood vessels in parts of the small intestine that had remained out of view with a scope exam. These abnormal blood vessels represent another disorder of the small intestine, Appleyard says.
Lewis has yet to publish his results on 11 people. He says that the camera-in-a-pill finds everything that the standard scope exams find, and more — like Popper`s tumor.
The pill has one big advantage over other methods: It`s as easy as swallowing an aspirin.
To find out what it was like, Swain himself swallowed a capsule. "It was completely painless," he says. That voyage through Swain`s small intestine revealed no polyps or other problems, he says.
But the capsule faces some hurdles. For one, the device runs on an eight-hour battery, not enough juice to take pictures of the entire gastrointestinal tract.
Critics say this device will never be retooled to work in the large intestine, where most cancers occur.
"I`m dubious about the technology," says Bernard Levin, a cancer prevention expert at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Levin fears the capsule will begin tumbling in the colon, which is much wider than the small intestine. That tumbling will prevent clear shots of the colon wall, he says.
Lewis says that he was pretty skeptical about the capsule`s ability to take clear shots even in the small intestine. "I was a naysayer," he says. But once he started using the device, he changed his mind.
"The view is just spectacular," he says of the capsule`s passage through the small intestine. Lewis and others acknowledge that changes will have to be made if the capsule is to work in the colon.
Motorized version
Researchers are working on equipping the capsule with a tiny motor, one that could power its trip through the large intestine.
Right now, the capsule is capable only of moving passively through the digestive tract. It can`t back up or zoom in on a trouble spot. But a motorized capsule would function more like a miniature submarine, one that could move right up to a polyp, open a port and use a tiny blade to remove it, Lamont envisions. Or it could seal off abnormal blood vessels with a small laser.
For now, the dream of a motorized capsule is just that. The capsule as it exists today may help some patients — people such as Popper who have a tumor or other abnormality in the small intestine. But Popper for one is very glad that he tried the experimental device.
If he hadn`t, "I`d be out there in the world with a tumor in my gut just waiting to spread."

Vielen Dank fuer die Auskunft. ich habe sogar den Internisten gefragt warum diese Kapsel nicht angewendet wird, man antwortete mir, dass sie nicht so genau ist wie die herkoemmliche Darmspiegelung. Stimmt das ?

Es wird laut Auskunft von GIVN an etwas für den Dickdarm gearbeitet, die jetzige Kapsel ist nicht dazu in der Lage einen so großen Hohlraum auszuleuchten.

bei GIVN beobachte ich auch wieder mehr leute, die long shorts erwerben, aber givn muss vorher erst noch die 19,5 $ durchbrechen, bevor eine korrektur kommt.

Patients swallow the camera, which passes through the digestive system transmitting images to a receiver worn on a belt for diagnostic purposes. The capsule is excreted naturally.
The company says that health plans of the Wellpoint Healthcare Network and The Regence Group will now reimburse for acquisition of the capsule to investigate cases of suspected Crohn`s disease. Both already reimburse for noninvasive capsule endoscopy for obscure gastrointestinal bleeding.

Given Imaging has developed a miniaturized videocam in a capsule used until now to diagnose various conditions of the gastric tract characterized by bleeding. Patients swallow the camera, which passes through the digestive system transmitting images to a receiver worn on a belt for diagnostic purposes. The capsule is excreted naturally.
The company says that health plans of the Wellpoint Healthcare Network and The Regence Group will now reimburse for acquisition of the capsule to investigate cases of suspected Crohn`s disease. Both already reimburse for noninvasive capsule endoscopy for obscure gastrointestinal bleeding.
With this announcement, the total American population with reimbursable access to capsule endoscopy for indications other than bleeding is 26.5 million.

Yoqneam, Israel, January 9, 2004 – Given Imaging (Nasdaq: GIVN) today announced that the Medicare carrier for the states of Ohio and West Virginia, Palmetto GBA, approved reimbursement coverage for Capsule Endoscopy as a primary procedure in the evaluation of signs or symptoms suspected to be indicative of inflammation of the small intestine, such as Crohn’s disease, and for suspected cancer.
Concurrently, Given Imaging announced that Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama has approved reimbursement coverage for Capsule Endoscopy in the initial diagnosis in patients with suspected Crohn’s disease following negative conventional diagnostic tests such as endoscopy of the upper or lower gastrointestinal tract.

Durchhalten bis es Standard weltweit ist.
Spinnerei oder Vision?
Wenn ich das Geld bei einer Versicherung anlege ist es auch für Jahre oder Jahrzehnte verschwunden.
Und die momentane MK lässt noch sehr viel Luft nach oben,
wenn es sich wirklich durchsetzt und Alternativen sind im Moment nicht in Sicht.
Was heisst,in den nächsten Jahren ist der Technologie-Vorsprung einfach groß genug.
Und es ist noch sehr, sehr unbekannt.
Eine Meldung wie die Patentüberprüfung von Olympus hätte bei einer bekannten Firma zu einem Kurseinbruch im zweistelligen Prozent geführt.
Oder kommt der noch.
Wenn ich demnächst mal bei einer Krebsvorsorge-Untersuchung
eine MA/2 verabreicht bekomme, werde ich mir wahrscheinlich denken, daß sich der lange Atem gelohnt hat.

bin ebenfalls verunsichert - habe selbst schon ärgerliche erfahrungen gemacht mit aktien, die ein patentverfahren am hals hatten - andererseits wurde die nachricht am 8.1. veröffentlicht und die aktie legte 8% zu - wobei man weiß, dass solche verfahren vor der veröffentlichung in insiderkreisen bekannt sind -
da ich mit givn schon ordenliche gewinne gemacht habe, lege ich einfach einen engen stopp -loss und kaufe zu, wenn die aktie auif die prognostizierten 30$ zugeht, auch wenn sie dann teurer geworden ist

Worldwide sales of the Given(R) Diagnostic System and M2A(R) capsule reached a record level of $12.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2003 representing a 38.5% increase over sales in the fourth quarter of 2002. Gross profit was a record 69.8% of revenues compared to 66.3% in the fourth quarter of 2002. Net loss for the fourth quarter was $0.6 million or $(0.02) per share, a substantial improvement compared to a net loss of $3.7 million or $(0.15) per share in the fourth quarter of 2002. In the fourth quarter of 2003, the company generated a positive cash flow for the first time in its history with a cash balance at the end of the quarter of $25.4 million, up $0.9 million from the balance at the end of the previous quarter.
For the year ended December 31, 2003, sales were $40.5 million reflecting a 40.3% increase over the year 2002. Gross profit increased to 66.6% of revenues compared to 58.8% in 2002. Operating expenses were $37.9 million in 2003 compared to $36 million in 2002. Net loss for the full year of 2003 was $9.6 million or $(0.38) per share, compared to a net loss of $18.3 million or $(0.73) per share for the year in 2002.

Gross profit was a record 69.8% of revenues compared to 66.3% in the fourth quarter of 2002. Net loss for the fourth quarter was $0.6 million or $(0.02) per share, a substantial improvement compared to a net loss of $3.7 million or $(0.15) per share in the fourth quarter of 2002. In the fourth quarter of 2003, the company generated a positive cash flow for the first time in its history with a cash balance at the end of the quarter of $25.4 million, up $0.9 million from the balance at the end of the previous quarter.
For the year ended December 31, 2003, sales were $40.5 million reflecting a 40.3% increase over the year 2002. Gross profit increased to 66.6% of revenues compared to 58.8% in 2002. Operating expenses were $37.9 million in 2003 compared to $36 million in 2002. Net loss for the full year of 2003 was $9.6 million or $(0.38) per share, compared to a net loss of $18.3 million or $(0.73) per share for the year in 2002.
"During 2003, we built a solid foundation for future growth and our strong results confirm the financial momentum we are generating," said Gavriel D. Meron, President and CEO of Given Imaging. "Central to our success was the removal of the ``adjunctive tool`` qualifier from our label enabling us to market capsule endoscopy to physicians and payers as a first line tool in diagnosing small bowel disorders. We also made substantive progress in improving reimbursement for capsule endoscopy through expanding the number of covered lives, broadening indications, increasing payment rates and the assignment of a permanent CPT code. "
Fourth Quarter 2003 Revenue Analysis The geographic breakdown of fourth quarter 2003 sales is as follows: (Millions of U.S. dollars) United States $8.3 Europe and ROW $4.2
During the quarter, worldwide M2A capsule sales grew to 15,700, of which more than 13,800 represent reorders. Sales of Given(R) Diagnostic Systems totaled 185 for the fourth quarter of 2003, with 114 systems sold in the United States.

The company recently completed development of an esophageal capsule and has conducted clinical feasibility testing in patients suffering from acid reflux symptoms. Clinical trials are currently underway and the product is expected to be launched later this year.
2004 Guidance

The parties will also collaborate in expanding the installed base of the Given Diagnostic System, which will be used for both the M2A Esophageal Capsule and Given Imaging’s existing M2A Small Bowel Capsule, as well as future capsules.

Givem Imaging (Nasdaq:GIVN), which produces a camera-in-a-pill endoscopy device for diagnosis of diseases of the small bowel, arouses enthusiasm at US investment house Merrill Lynch, but the enthusiasm runs out when it comes to the share price. "With GIVN currently trading at 70 times our estimated 2005 EPS estimate, much of the good news appears to already be reflected in the stock," Merrill Lynch analysts Timothy J. Lee, Daniel T. Lemaitre, and Katherine A. Martinelli write in initiating coverage of the company. " However," they add, "due to the company’s growth prospects, we believe there is value in the stock, particularly in the long term." While they evince admiration of the company, the analysts find the share price expensive, and therefore give the stock a "Neutral" rating.
This recommendation from Merrill Lynch`s research arm comes two weeks after its underwriting arm completed Given Imaging`s secondary issue on Wall Street (together with Citigroup). The recommendation illustrates just how hard Wall Street investment houses are trying to build Chinese walls between their various departments, something that was also evident in the "Sell" recommendation from Citigroup`s research arm Smith Barney four months after Citigroup led a share issue by the company.
Two weeks ago, Given Imaging raised about $80 million, with the company itself issuing 1.5 million new shares at $32 each, bringing it about $45 million net. At the same time, the company`s existing shareholders sold 1.005 million shares for a total of $32.2 million.
the issue price of $32 was a little lower than the closing price of the company`s share on the issue date, $32.2, but the following day the share price shot up to its present level of around $35, giving he company a market cap of $950 million.
The value rather frightens Merrill Lynch`s analysts, despite what they describe as Given Imaging`s potential. "2003 revenue topped $40 million, +40% from ’02 levels, and with continued market adoption, 40%+ revenue growth appears to be doable in 2004. Looking beyond ’04, with the introduction of new products such as the M2A capsule that is targeted at esophageal disorders, 30-40%type revenue growth should be sustainable over the next several years. Furthermore, the leverage in the P&L should fuel even faster earnings growth. As such, we estimate that EPS per share could approach $0.50 in 2005 and climb to $0.90 in 2006," their report says.

Givem Imaging (Nasdaq:GIVN), which produces a camera-in-a-pill endoscopy device for diagnosis of diseases of the small bowel, arouses enthusiasm at US investment house Merrill Lynch, but the enthusiasm runs out when it comes to the share price. "With GIVN currently trading at 70 times our estimated 2005 EPS estimate, much of the good news appears to already be reflected in the stock," Merrill Lynch analysts Timothy J. Lee, Daniel T. Lemaitre, and Katherine A. Martinelli write in initiating coverage of the company. " However," they add, "due to the company’s growth prospects, we believe there is value in the stock, particularly in the long term." While they evince admiration of the company, the analysts find the share price expensive, and therefore give the stock a "Neutral" rating.
This recommendation from Merrill Lynch`s research arm comes two weeks after its underwriting arm completed Given Imaging`s secondary issue on Wall Street (together with Citigroup). The recommendation illustrates just how hard Wall Street investment houses are trying to build Chinese walls between their various departments, something that was also evident in the "Sell" recommendation from Citigroup`s research arm Smith Barney four months after Citigroup led a share issue by the company.
Two weeks ago, Given Imaging raised about $80 million, with the company itself issuing 1.5 million new shares at $32 each, bringing it about $45 million net. At the same time, the company`s existing shareholders sold 1.005 million shares for a total of $32.2 million.
the issue price of $32 was a little lower than the closing price of the company`s share on the issue date, $32.2, but the following day the share price shot up to its present level of around $35, giving he company a market cap of $950 million.
The value rather frightens Merrill Lynch`s analysts, despite what they describe as Given Imaging`s potential. "2003 revenue topped $40 million, +40% from ’02 levels, and with continued market adoption, 40%+ revenue growth appears to be doable in 2004. Looking beyond ’04, with the introduction of new products such as the M2A capsule that is targeted at esophageal disorders, 30-40%type revenue growth should be sustainable over the next several years. Furthermore, the leverage in the P&L should fuel even faster earnings growth. As such, we estimate that EPS per share could approach $0.50 in 2005 and climb to $0.90 in 2006," their report says.

Jetzt stehen wir fast bei 40 $ und die AKtie ist seit knapp einem Jahr in einer Seitwärtskonsolidierung.
Nun kündigt sich bald ein Ausbruch aus einem aufsteigenden bullishen Dreieck an.
Man sollte versuchen entweder mit stop buy 40 $ (Bids über 40 $) oder an der unteren Tradingrange bei etwa 30 $ mit SL 28$ agieren.
