Boom in gold panning sector
GOLD panning as the most common form of small-scale mining in the country is booming, thanks to the rising gold price which has now topped the US$500-mark (K1,613) an ounce.
Because of this, more benefits were to be expected for small-scale miners.
Graham Taylor from the Mining Department said this when he officially handed over a new document titled “Development of a Toxic Substance Curriculum for training Health Professionals” to the Health Department this week.
Mr Taylor is a Sustainable Development training coordinator under the World Bank Technical Assistance Project in the mining sector.
The document completed by Dr Robert Turare was aimed to educate health professionals on the dangers of toxic substances, especially mercury, cyanide, petrol, kerosene, benzene, detergents and their effect on health when misused.
The document was produced by Wau Ecological Institute (WEI) under the Small Scale Mining Project and funded by the Japan Social Development Fund Grant.
Mr Taylor said they had been making a big effort in the past years to improve the economic performance of gold panners while at the same time reducing the negative environmental, health and social impacts on communities.
He said although gold panning activities were increasing, the miners need to know about the dangers of using mercury when refining gold.
Small-scale mining was an important informal economic activity in rural areas and contributes over K120 million in export earnings annually.
There are 50,000 gold panners scattered throughout the country.
Meanwhile, WEI secretary Trevor Neale said the SSM Project had been extended until June 2007.
The project implemented jointly with the Mining Department was originally planned to end this year.
“We are grateful to the government of Japan for selecting WEI as the implementing agency for this project because of its experience in community-based environment and conservation programmes,” a WEI spokesman said.

Minister warns ‘dead logs’
http://www.postcourier.com.pg/
THE mining industry is expecting new projects next year and the management of the Department of Mining will not entertain any “dead logs” in the department. The Ministry of Mining also sounded a warning that any employee of the department who tried to “swim against the tide” of the Mineral Resources Authority would not succeed and would only succumb to swim with the tide. Mining Minister Sam Akoitai told his department staff yesterday during their end-of-year get together that they overcame many challenges this year and he would not expect any thing would jeopardise the good things that they had done during the course of this year. He also warned staff who would move over to the new MRA that they would have to perform to expectations or “ship out” as the MRA would become a very important organisation for the Government as there would be an increase in exploration and mining companies entering the country. Mr Akoitai, who is also the MP for Central Bougainville, said the Mineral Resource Authority was already approved by Parliament and the department and other stakeholders only needed to work together and implement the necessary requirements as it awaits gazettal. Mr Akoitai said this year, the department successfully implemented the World Bank projects and also saw the inception of the Sysmin project, the Mineral Resource Authority approved by Parliament and construction on the Mining Haus which also started this year. “We still have challenges ahead of us,” Mr Akoitai said.

A wise approach to AIM
15/12/2005
Solomon Gold, an antipodean concern with assets obtained from an Australian mining group, is contemplating a New Year AIM float.
Aussie geologist Nick Mather runs Solomon, whose potential gold and copper assets lie in the South Pacific on the same geological trend as the massive Bougainville and Lihir mineral deposits. Senior City mining guru and ex-World Gold Council executive Rob Weinberg is a non-executive director of the company, which hopes to attract an institutional following.
