The VG024`s High Gain and Constant IP3 are Ideal for Transmitter & Receiver Chains

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 28, 2003--WJ Communications, Inc (Nasdaq:WJCI - News), a leading designer and supplier of high-performance RF semiconductors and multi-chip modules (MCM), today expanded its line of variable gain amplifiers with the wide-band high dynamic range VG024. The highly integrated VG024 provides a combination of exceptional dynamic range and high linearity not currently available in the marketplace. Its unique circuit design makes it ideal for temperature compensation and AGC applications over the 50-2200 MHz range.
"WJ`s new VGA product family addresses the need for higher performance variable gain amplifiers required for newer wireless protocols such as W-CDMA and GSM Edge," said Javed Patel, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing of WJ Communications. "Our line of VGA`s include IF and RF functions for a broad range of applications. Their tight integration, high linearity, low-cost and variable gain characteristics are major advancements above today`s primarily discrete solutions."

      Technology Overview

The VG024 is a broadband amplifier with a variable attenuator that provides constant +37 dBm OIP3 and +21 dBm P1dB performance over the entire attenuation range. As a temperature compensation circuit the VG024 offers completely independent gain and slope (gain over temperature) adjustments using a simple application circuit. It is also ideal for AGC applications and can be adjusted to operate anywhere in the 50-2200 MHz range by selection of off-chip components. The VG024 is ideal for transmitter and receiver chain applications that process complex digital modulation formats such as CDMA and EDGE. Superior thermal design allows the product to have a MTBF rating of 100 years at a mounting case temperature of +85 degrees C. The VG024 is packaged in a SOIC-8 surface-mount package.

WJ Communications Enters the RFID Market in a Strategic Partnership With Alien Technology
Wednesday September 3, 8:33 am ET

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 3, 2003--WJ Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq:WJCI - News), a leading designer and supplier of RF semiconductors and multi-chip modules, today announced that it has entered into a strategic partnership with Alien Technology Corporation (Alien), a leading provider of reliable, high-volume, low-cost, Electronic Product Code (EPC) compliant Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) products. WJ is applying both its radio expertise and RF semiconductor integration intellectual property to address the need for low-cost RFID readers capable of working in real-world environments. WJ`s reader design and technology offer a breakthrough reduction in reader cost and size. RFID technology allows companies to locate, identify and monitor their inventory remotely. WJ`s reader hardware will be part of Alien`s hardware demonstration at the inaugural EPC(TM) Symposium, Sept. 15-17 at McCormick Place in Chicago.
"We are very pleased to be collaborating with WJ as they enter this market," said Thomas Pounds, vice president, corporate development and product strategy for Alien Technology. "Bringing together Alien`s experience in RFID and WJ`s integration and RFIC expertise, this partnership addresses one of the major needs for widespread RFID adoption: the availability of low-cost, high-performance readers. The combination of Alien`s low-cost, EPC-compliant RFID hardware and WJ`s low-cost, semiconductor-based reader solution is important for end-users who want to accelerate their ability to achieve the business benefits of RFID and to manufacturers and integrators who will help deliver on the promise of RFID."

The small reader engines -- about the size of a PCMCIA-card -- include the RF and electronic circuitry required to read and program Auto-ID Center Class 1 EPC tags. They are designed to be integrated with an external power supply and antenna to create a complete reader. These devices will be invaluable for enabling a wide range of reader/programmer solutions, including handheld, printer, material handling, and industrial products developed by Alien and others. Production units are expected by the fourth calendar quarter of 2003.

"The need for low-cost readers capable of robust operation in cluttered RF environments plays to WJ`s strengths," said James Mravca, senior vice president, strategic marketing and business development for WJ Communications. "WJ has a 40-year history of making radios for commercial and defense applications, and our current focus on low-cost RF semiconductors and multi-chip modules is the perfect match for RFID readers. The RFID market expands our presence beyond existing infrastructure, CATV and WLAN markets. With Alien we`ve accelerated our efforts and have already developed working samples for a UHF Class 1 system. As a partner with Alien, our future efforts will focus on lower cost, higher integration, flexibility and performance. WJ`s intent is to enable a more ubiquitous deployment of reader devices thereby improving overall system utility."
