Apple Slips: New MacBook Pros ‘A Solid Evolution,’ Says Piper
Apple unveiled a trio of MacBook Pro revamps at a press event at its Cupertino headquarters on October 27th, 2016..Apple Inc.
A little company called Apple (AAPL) had a press event this afternoon at its auditorium on its Cupertino campus during which it announced redesigned MacBook Pro laptops, a lighter, thinner MacBook Pro to replace the “Air” line, and an application to consolidate movie and TV choices on its Apple TV set-top box, called “TV.”
The event follows Microsoft‘s (MSFT) own computing event, in New York City, yesterday, during which it unveiled an update to its “Surface Book” combo tablet and laptop, and a new desktop called the “Surface Studio,” which features a touch-sensitive display.
The new MacBook Pro, in 13-inch and 15-inch configurations, have a “touch bar” that is a touch-sensitive layer of graphics at the top of the keyboard. It has context-sensitive controls for apps. There’s also a fingerprint sensor. A third model, in 13-inch display, does not have the touch bar but gets a slimmed down profile that’s closer to the Macbook and the Macbook Air, at 0.6 inches thick and 3 pounds. The devices start at $1,499 for the 13-inch model that doesn’t have the touch bar, $1,799 for the 13-inch model with touch bar, and $2,399 for the 15-inch model.
More on the MacBooks and the touch bar by my colleague Emily Bary over at Barron’s Next. Also, see Emily’s post on why the new Apple TV app is no “game-changer.”
Apple shares are down $1.11, or 1%, at $114.48, following the event.
Tech Trader Daily was not invited to the event, but The Verge’s Dieter Bohn, Nilay Patel, and Casey Newton have all the details in their expert live blog of the event.
The replay of the event is posted on Apple’s Web site.
Apple also announced a number of usability enhancements to its software, including something called “Live Listen” to make hearing aids work better by using the iPhone as a microphone whose sound gets louder as the phone is positioned closer to a speaker. Something called “Switch Control” lets one use joysticks and other controls instead of keyboard and mouse input.
CEO Tim Cook also gave an overview of recent business, without giving too much in the way of data. He said 60% of Apple customers had switched to iOS 10, the latest version, while deriding the competition, saying that less than 1% of users of Alphabet’s (GOOGL) Google’s Android had moved to that version. He said 8,000 apps are now available on Apple TV.
Microsoft’s “MineCraft” video game is coming to Apple TV, he announced.
Among those apps are 1,600 dedicated to video, said Cook. Hence, the need for the new app to consolidate the offerings.
As is often the case, Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster is first out of the gate with his review of the proceedings. Munster, who has an Overweight rating on the shares, and a $155 price target, writes that the new MacBook Pros are “a solid evolution in the company’s pro line of laptops,” adding that “Touch Bar is a unique addition to the Macbook Pro that even more closely aligns Macs with the iOS suite, which we believe strengthens the overall product halo.”
The new gear probably won’t “meaningfully move the needle (Mac’s will be ~10% of revenue in FY17),” writes Munster, but “we believe this should return the Mac segment to growth in the near-term and shows that the company continues to launch innovative new devices.”
He thinks today’s Apple TV app is a prelude to what he still expects will be a subscription-based offering for live TV content at some point:
The user interface appears very customer friendly compared to standard cable TV guides. One potential issue for content providers is that it seems to diminish the idea of a network in favor of search tools that take you directly to content. There are no “channels.” If TV is Apple’s ultimate vision for video content, it may take some time for content providers to get beyond their brand attachment and live on their content alone. We continue to expect a TV subscription service from Apple, but may be more than a year away given headwinds the company has dealt with from potential partners to date.
