Unified Area Command and Audubon Nature Institute Invite Community to Participate in “Turtle Talk” Virtual Town Hall

First Event Bringing Together Major Agencies Involved in Sea Turtle Protection

NEW ORLEANS – The Unified Area Command and Audubon Nature Institute are co-hosting a live-streamed town hall meeting, bringing together sea turtle experts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Park Service. “Turtle Talk” is the first event to bring together the lead agencies in one forum to discuss the status of sea turtles affected by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and efforts to protect them.

Participants will be able to view and participate in the event virtually by visiting turtletalk.deepwaterhorizonresponse.com. The event will take place from 2 – 3 p.m. CDT on Friday, July 16 and will be streamed live from Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans.

The virtual town hall will be moderated by Laurie Conkerton, the Sr. Vice President of Development for Audubon Nature Institute and a video introduction will be provided by wildlife biologist and NBC and MSNBC’s science and environmental expert, Jeff Corwin:

The panelists are:

- NOAA Fisheries’ sea turtle expert Barbara Schroeder has been studying sea turtles and working on issues related to their conservation and recovery since 1978. Schroeder is an expert on sea turtle nesting and stranding issues, fisheries by catch, and sea turtle policy and management.

- Dr. Debby Crouse of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is one of the agencies leading experts on endangered species recovery and sea turtles. With a Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Crouse has led the Services efforts in developing and implementing recovery plans for endangered and threatened species that include loggerhead sea turtles. Dr. Crouse has shared her experience and knowledge as a professor with students at North Carolina University and has worked with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and the Center for Marine Conservation.

- National Park Service Rick Clark, Gulf Islands National Seashore, Chief of Science and Resource Management has devoted 25 years to natural resource management. He has worked on the oil spill since day one and is intimately familiar with the potential impacts the oil may have on sea turtles.

Additionally, the Unified Area Command will be live tweeting the event at @Oil_Spill_2010 and posting updates on the Deepwater Horizon Response Facebook page.

NOAA, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the National Park Service are part of the Unified Area Command responding to the oil spill. Audubon serves as coordinator for the Louisiana Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Rescue Program and is responsible for rescuing and rehabilitating sea turtles and marine mammals stranded in Louisiana. Federal wildlife officials and partners are implementing an extraordinary plan to protect sea turtle nests and eggs from potential impacts of the oil spill in the northern Gulf of Mexico. The strategy involves relocation of an estimated 700 sea turtle nests from beaches along the northern Gulf to Florida's east coast, followed by release into the Atlantic Ocean.
