BHP says massive iron ore expansions over, BHP said it is done with iron ore expansions but that it is not worried about the record low price the commodity has fallen to
      www.theaustralian.com.au/subscribe/news/1/index.html?sourceC…
      www.miningaustralia.com.au/News/BHP-says-massive-iron-ore-ex…

"BHP said it is done with iron ore expansions but that it is not worried about the record low price the commodity has fallen to.

Speaking at the company’s annual general meeting in Adelaide yesterday, Andrew Mackenzie told The Australian he was not concerned that iron ore prices had hit $US70 a tonne as its iron ore business was still profitable at these levels.

BHP and Rio Tinto have been blamed for the falling price of iron ore, which has halved its value since the start of the year, as the two push massive production expansions that have flooded the market with new supply.

However BHP chairman Jac Nasser said the expansion plans were not a secret and had been long pipeline investments.

“They don’t creep up on you; they get approved by many people in the process including government regulators and government,” Nasser said.

But Mackenzie said BHP had put the brakes on further iron ore expansions three years ago.

“Our company has been very clear that the time for massive expansions of iron ore is over and we have shifted our investment into the energy sector, predominantly copper and petroleum, and we started doing that three years ago,” he said.

“We have been incredibly successful with productivity in our iron ore business and that means we can produce a lot more than we originally thought we would be able to do, both from long-established assets and stuff we have subsequently invested in, and that is something we will continue with.” "

BHP Spin-Off und deutsche Steuern ?

"BHP’s plans to spin off its aluminium, coal, manganese, nickel and silver assets into an independently listed company were advancing."

Was genau ist der Grund fuer diese Abspaltung?

BHP sets sights on another $3,500,000,000 in yearly productivity gains, Mining giant BHP Billiton said on Friday that it was targeting further productivity gains, with the company operating more like an advanced manufacturer than a traditional resource company - MW, PERTH - Oct 24, 2014

Mining giant BHP Billiton said on Friday that it was targeting further productivity gains, with the company operating more like an advanced manufacturer than a traditional resource company.

“By the end of the 2017 financial year, we are targeting at least $3.5-billion of additional annualised productivity gains beyond those already reported,” CEO Andrew Mackenzie told shareholders at a meeting in London.

Earlier this year, BHP announced that it had embedded more than $6.6-billion of sustainable, annualised productivity-led gains over the last two years.

“The demerger proposal is an important step forward to go beyond this promise and further strengthen your already financially strong company,” Mackenzie added.

BHP’s plans to spin off its aluminium, coal, manganese, nickel and silver assets into an independently listed company were advancing.

“The new company’s assets, which are spread across the southern hemisphere, form a portfolio that, in the 2014 financial year, generated almost $1.8-billion of earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation. The new company will be the world’s largest producer of manganese ore, will own the world’s largest producing silver mine, and be a substantial producer of alumina, aluminium, nickel and coal,” said Mackenzie.

Company chairperson Jac Nasser noted that BHP’s strategy post the demerger, would remain unchanged.

We will focus on what we do best. We will continue to own and operate large, long-life, low-cost, expandable, upstream assets diversified by commodity, geography and market. We will continue to provide the energy and minerals that support global economic growth and development.

The new venture would likely be listed on the ASX, the JSE and on the London exchange.

A final board decision on the demerger would be made only once the necessary government, regulatory and third-party approvals had been secured. "

BHP Billiton to lower costs +raise production, @Western Australia Iron Ore - MT - Oct 6, 2014
      www.mining-technology.com/news/newsbhp-billiton-to-lower-cos…

"Mining giant BHP Billiton is planning to cut capital costs of iron ore production by 25% and to expand production by 65 million tonnes (Mt) a year at its Western Australia Iron Ore (WAIO) operations.

The increased production and low capital costs will allow the company to overtake rival Rio Tinto as the lowest cost producer of iron ore globally.

While Rio Tinto's expenditure stands at $20.40 a tonne, BHP aims to produce iron ore for less than $20 a tonne, which does not include the cost of shipping and royalties.

BHP Billiton iron ore president Jimmy Wilson was quoted by The Wall Street Journal as saying: "This is not targeted at competitors in any way; at the end of the day, it is targeted at improving the margins and the value that we get from our own business."

With the price of iron ore falling by 41% this year to $78.90 a tonne, iron ore mining firms including Vale, Rio Tinto and BHP are looking to improve output rates with the aim of achieving greater profits from reduced production costs.

Wilson said in a statement: "We continue to see healthy demand growth for iron ore in the mid-term as Chinese steel production is expected to increase by approximately 25% to between 1.0 and 1.1 billion tonnes in the early to mid-2020s."

The company has four major hubs at its WAIO operations, namely Mt Newman, Yandi, Mt Goldsworthy and Jimblebar, where it plans to expand production capacities by 65Mt a year at a capital cost of $30 an annual tonne.

The increase will allow the company to raise its capacity from 225Mt in the last financial year to 290Mt a year by mid 2017.

"We completed our major supply chain investments some time ago and have since focused on using BHP Billiton's benchmarking systems to improve the performance of our equipment by systematically tackling the bottlenecks," Wilson added.

"We now expect to increase WAIO mine capacity to 275Mt a year without the need for additional fixed plant investment.

"Beyond that, the Inner Harbour Debottlenecking and Jimblebar phase two projects will help us to reach 290Mt a year of supply chain capacity at low capital cost." "
